Mike Tomlin Offers 'No Comment' on News That Big Ben Will Host WWE Raw

The Steelers are 1-2, without Troy Polamalu, and face a huge test against the Chargers on Sunday night. The biggest story line heading into the weekend? Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers' offensive line headlining a WWE Raw (!) event Monday night.

Evidently, there are concerns that Big Ben and his five fat friends aren't taking their day jobs seriously. Because everyone knows that true professionals think about football every waking moment.

In any event, left tackle Max Starks isn't worried. Via the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

Steelers, Plaxico Post-Incarceration Reunion Makes Perfect Sense*

The plan was for Ben Roethlisberger to ride the pine as a rookie. That changed when Tommy Maddox went down two weeks into the 2004 season. Five years, two Super Bowl championships and one helmetless asphalt head-butt later, it's all worked out.

Spinning the Last-Round Circle

One of my favorite moves on fantasy football draft day is taking a late-round gamble and letting everyone else laugh at me. You can have the first round, just let me pick late. To illustrate, here's an actual message board post last season after one of my drafts: "Commish Snyder purposefully did not draft a kicker so he could take a flier on yet another long shot (Steve Slaton of the Texans). I'm sure he'll say it will pay off in the long run."

My response? "I'll end up dropping Patrick Crayton (my fifth WR) for a kicker before week 1 when Slaton wins the Houston gig -- unless someone suffers a season-ending injury, in which case I'll drop that person."

Summer Scramble: AFC North Position Battles to Watch

It's July, the slowest month of the year for the NFL, and it's driving you nuts. You need a fix. A hit. Anything NFL to pull you through the dog days. FanHouse is here to help with an in-depth look at each division that should have you plenty prepared for training camp. We're calling it the Summer Scramble, and today we look at the AFC North's looming position battles.

Pittsburgh Steelers: Up for an Encore?

SteelersBecause the NFL season never ends, we present our 2009 Offseason Roadmaps for front offices to navigate through the summer.

For the second time in four years, the Steelers hoisted the Lombardi Trophy, which means no matter what happens this offseason, Steelers fans have plenty of reasons to be happy. But with an easier 2009 schedule on the horizon and few big names hitting free agency, Steelers fans are ready to start thinking repeat, even if Mike Tomlin won't use that word.

Rashard Mendenhall Gives Steelers More Options in 2009

The Steelers really didn't have a choice. When Illinois running back Rashard Mendenhall was still on the board 22 picks into the 2008 NFL draft, Pittsburgh pretty much had to take him. Not because they needed a running back, but because Mendenhall had game-changing ability and was too good to pass up at that point in the proceedings.

Sure, Pittsburgh had gaping chasms along the offensive line -- the Sean Mahan experiment flopped and Alan Faneca took the money and ran to New York -- and they still had said gaping chasms when they selected wideout Limas Sweed a round later.

Steelers 23, Ravens 14: Flacco Struggles, Pittsburgh Wins the AFC

Throughout the playoffs, the Ravens had simply asked Joe Flacco to not lose the game. If he could make a big play or two a game, while not turning the ball over, Baltimore's defense would handle the rest.

But faced with a defense even tougher than Baltimore's, Flacco finally found himself asked to do more. And then the Ravens remembered that rookies don't lead teams to Super Bowls. And because of that -- and the best defense in the league -- Pittsburgh is headed to the Super Bowl.

Steelers Bench Santonio Holmes, Plaxico Burress Now Looks Like He'll Play for Giants

This offseason, the Steelers cut Cedrick Wilson after he got into a physical altercation with his girlfriend at a local Mexican eatery. Later, the club pretended it wasn't paying attention when Pro Bowl linebacker James Harrison was charged with slapping his girlfriend, and the media soon accused the team of having different rules for different players.

Apparently, that's changed; last night, Santonio Holmes was arrested for marijuana possession and the Steelers have decided to deactivate their big-play threat for this Sunday's matchup against the Giants.

"When you're a great team, there will be distractions," head coach Mike Tomlin told Pittsburgh's WPXI. Well, there are other distractions to add to the list: left tackle Marvel Smith, cornerback Bryant McFadden, and running back Willie Parker will all be out with injuries, and defensive end Aaron Smith will also miss the game for personal reasons. Oh, and Troy Polamalu is probably still punch drunk after cracking noggins with the Bengals' Cedric Benson last week. On the upside, Ben Roethlisberger feels great!

Don't Give Up On Limas Sweed

As a Steelers fan, I can comfortably say that we aren't always the most easy going of fans. We're incredibly loyal, we'll travel anywhere to take over another's team stadium and we're incredibly passionate.

But Steelers fans aren't patient, which is why Limas Sweed has already been declared a bust by some six games into his rookie season.

Sweed finally got his first catch of the year last week against the Bengals. He has only been active for two games this year, and will likely return to the inactive roster as soon as Dallas Baker is healthy.

Sweed Is Dropping His Chance

Two weeks ago, Willie Reid was thought to be battling for a roster spot, now could he possibly start the season as the No. 4 receiver?

It's still unlikely, but as Limas Sweed keeps dropping passes, it's a fair to ask if the Steelers can depend on a rookie who has dropped three passes in the past two weeks. While Sweed is watching his chances slip through his fingers, Reid now leads the Steelers receivers in receptions (9) and yards (81).

What is pretty apparent, and something that is being mentioned by Steelers beat writers is that the team could be in the market for plucking a veteran receiver off the waiver wire. Sweed could end up being a pretty good receiver, even by the end of this year. But right now he's pretty inconsistent.
