Roger Huerta Deserves Break From Fighting and Respect of Fans

Roger HuertaIt's hard to believe that after last night's split-decision loss to Gray Maynard, fighting could be in the rearview mirror of Roger Huerta's life. Back around the time that the UFC re-emerged into the spotlight of mainstream media, roughly around UFC 66, Huerta became one of the UFC's go-to guys as a front man and fighter. Now, he's likely on the way out.

Because of his decision, Huerta has faced derision and scorn from some fans and insiders, who would like to revise history and say he was never a "real fighter" and was handed opportunities instead of earning them. They say his decision to leave MMA for acting shows that he was never really dedicated to the sport. But the reality is so much deeper.

Dana White Fires First Shots at 'Strike-Farce' After Fedor Emelianenko Signing

Dana WhitePHILADELPHIA -- For years, there's been a respectful peace between UFC President Dana White and Strikeforce President Scott Coker. In the past, White has pointed him out as a class act and an effective leader. Even when Strikeforce signed a deal with NBC, White had nothing bad to say about Coker.

But after the upstart San Jose, Calif.-based promotion signed coveted free agent and heavyweight star Fedor Emelianenko, the gloves are off, and the first shots of the UFC-Strikeforce war have been fired.

While White still holds a personal respect for Coker, he pulled no punches in bashing the company Coker runs in the moments after a UFC 101 press conference, calling it "Strike-Farce" and characterizing it as a "regional show."

World Series Champ Shane Victorino Gives UFC 101 Philly Blessing

Shane Victorino, BJ PennPHILADELPHIA – BJ Penn is fond of saying that fighting is in the blood of most Hawaiians, and Shane Victorino tends to agree. The Philadelphia Phillies All-Star outfielder, who is also from the 50th state, happens to be a massive UFC fan, and stopped by the UFC 101 fighter workouts prior to his Wednesday night game against the Colorado Rockies.

Ironically, however, Victorino did not originally become a fan because of Penn, but was indoctrinated into the UFC by his fiancée, Melissa Smith, who once worked as an assistant for Zuffa co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta. Victorino and Smith live in Las Vegas during the offseason, and he's become friendly with UFC brass, including President Dana White.

Like millions of others, Victorino is a big fan who regularly logs on to the web to get the latest news. And he says he has plenty of company on his team. Jayson Werth, Raul Ibanez, Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins all follow the action as well.

Reversing Course, Mirko Cro Cop Re-Signs With UFC

LAS VEGAS -- It seemed after last month that Mirko Cro Cop walked out of the UFC for good, napalming his relationship with the organization on the way out the door.

Not so fast.

The Croatian heavyweight star has apparently signed a three-fight deal with the company, Zuffa co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta told UFC fans during a question-and-answer session during Saturday's pre-UFC 100 Fan Expo.

Cro Cop-UFC Drama Not Done

Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic's on-again, off-again relationship with the UFC might not be off again after all.

Cro Cop -- who signed with the UFC in 2006, lost two of his three fights in 2007, fought in Japan in 2008 and successfully returned to the Octagon in 2009 -- infuriated UFC President Dana White when he abruptly quit after winning at UFC 99, reportedly agreeing to go back to Japan to fight for Dream.

But a new report in Cro Cop's native Croatia says UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta may have convinced Filipovic to step back into the Octagon.

WEC 41 Video Blog With Dana White: Kimbo Slice Steals the Show

The biggest fight in World Extreme Cagefighting history will take place on Sunday night when Mike Brown defends his featherweight belt against Urijah Faber at WEC 41, and UFC President Dana White is marking the occasion with his first series of WEC video blogs this week. But the first installment will get attention mostly because of the presence of Kimbo Slice.

E:60 Profile a Close Look at Dana White

The long-awaited ESPN E:60 profile of UFC President Dana White will air tonight at 7 PM ET, and this afternoon I got an advance look at the full 12-minute profile. It is, as E:60 correspondent Tom Farrey said it would be, a portrait that shows both sides of White's personality: The intense worker who has turned the UFC into a huge success, and the man who has infuriated his competitors and drawn criticism for his temperament.

UFC to Induct Two New Members of Hall Of Fame on UFC 100 Weekend

Two new names will be added to the short list of those inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame on July 10 as part of UFC's Fan Expo during UFC 100 weekend.

To date, only five have earned the honor: Ken Shamrock, Royce Gracie, Dan Severn, Randy Couture and Mark Coleman.

The UFC has not released the names of the new inductees, but if I were to venture a guess, I would think that former UFC light-heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell is a lock for one of the slots. While Liddell has not officially retired (he's currently on vacation), UFC President Dana White has repeatedly stated "the Iceman" is done in the octagon.

WEC Boss Peter Dropick on Miguel Torres, Faber-Brown 2 and Pay-Per-View

World Extreme Cagefighting is considered by many to be the little brother of the UFC. But while the fighters in the WEC are small, I found in talking to WEC Vice President Peter Dropick that there's nothing small about the promotion's plans.

Dropick and I talked this week about the organization's April 5 show in Chicago, the future plans of bantamweight champion Miguel Torres, why the upcoming featherweight title fight between Mike Brown and Urijah Faber will be on pay-per-view, why TV viewers didn't see the aftermath of a nasty knockout in the WEC's most recent show, and where Dropick himself fits in a company run by Dana White, Lorenzo Fertitta and Frank Fertitta. The full interview is below.
