Federer, Serena Advance at Wimbledon

Roger FedererWIMBLEDON, England (AP) -- When Roger Federer misfired on an important shot Friday, his knees buckled and he stomped behind the baseline, miffed at his mere mortality.

The moment quickly passed, and Federer advanced to the second week at Wimbledon by beating Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-1.

Federer lost a set for first time this week, with two errant forehands costing him the tiebreaker. That merely extended his Centre Court workout by half an hour.

Michael Stich Hates Grunting, Says Wimbledon Women Only 'Sell Sex'

Michael Stich Grunting Wimbledon 2009Grunting, for lack of a better word, in women's tennis doesn't bother me; it's an obvious sign of physical exertion and I may or may not find it attractive. But I'm not everyone, and I'm certainly not former Wimbledon champ Michael Stich, who appears fairly repulsed by the whole grunt thing.

Also, he firmly believes that the fine ladies who compete at Wimbledon are "just there to sell sex" which is why they should stop grunting (Honestly, Stich has to be the only one who somehow doesn't think Maria Sharapova's grunting is attractive in some aspect, right?)

Nadal, Safina Top Seeds at Wimbledon

Rafael Nadal and Dinara SafinaWIMBLEDON, England (June 17) -- Rafael Nadal's French Open stumble failed to strip him of the world No. 1 ranking, and it won't cost him the top seed at Wimbledon either.

Nadal, the tournament's defending champion, was seeded No. 1 for Wimbledon on Wednesday. Top-ranked Dinara Safina, who lost to Svetlana Kuznetsova in the French Open final, earned the women's No. 1 seed.

There were no big surprises when the All England Club announced the seedings for the grass-court Grand Slam tournament, which opens June 22. The draw will be released Friday.

Sharapova Return = Sharapova Gallery

Maria Sharapova hit the court for the first time in nearly 10 months on Monday, beating Tathiana Garbin (who?) in three sets -- 6-1, 6-7 (6), 6-3 -- at the Warsaw Open.

And as Greg Couch wrote last week, thank God.

Sharpova's return is obviously good for the game. But let's be real, it's also good for the eyes. With Sharapova's return, it means we can load up the Sharapova gallery again. Go ahead, you know you want to click through it.

Gallery after the jump.

Serena Should Be No. 1 and Much More

Blame the system if you want. It is all wrong. But Dinara Safina is now the No. 1 ranked women's tennis player, and no, she's not the best women's player.

Psycho. That's how Serena Williams, the best player, described it.

"I just ...'' she said. "I can't compute it.''

No, a computer does that. Tennis has its own little BCS-type controversy now, with computers trying to measure greatness. The difference is that the college football can't pick a champ without computers. Tennis does it with tournaments.

Former Wisconsin Football Player Threatens to Kill Barry Alvarez, Maria Sharapova

From the "it would be funny, except it's not" department: A former Wisconsin Badger football player was arrested Friday on charges of stalking and telephone harassment. Leonard Taylor, a defensive back who played for Barry Alvarez from 1995 to 1998, left dozens of messages at the UW athletic department, including one in which he threatened to kill Alvarez and his family,

"I'll kill you first, mother (expletive)," Taylor said, according to the complaint. "I've got 24 (expletive) hours mother (expletive). I'm coming for your (expletive) (expletive). You might have a (expletive) war."

The calls began in early September but ended when Madison police called Taylor and told him to quit. However, the calls resumed on November 24, which led to Taylor's arrest.

The latest calls also included references to tennis player Maria Sharapova, whom Taylor blamed for some of his difficulties. Taylor said he wanted to marry Sharapova, which isn't that unusual a thing for guys his age to say. Or younger guys and older guys, for that matter. He also said he wanted to kill Sharapova and her family as well.

You might figure there's more to this story, stuff that makes it less comical and much sadder, and you'd be right.

Andy Roddick Offers Up Nude Tennis Lesson, Banks Charity $15,000

Too many times we forget about the female readers around these parts, so here's a little something for the ladies: 26-year-old Andy Roddick did just about all you can to benefit a charity this past weekend.

The recently engaged Roddick was part of Sir Elton John's 16th Annual Advanta World Team Tennis Smash, benefiting those with AIDS in and around the Atlanta area, and decided that the one-hour private tennis lesson with him being auctioned off wasn't enough. Roddick decided to up the ante with an offer of a shirtless lesson, only to one-up himself again by offering to coach in the nude. That noise you just heard was six million females lamenting the fact that they don't live on Peachtree Street.

As If Our Country Could Be Less Hopeful, Maria Sharapova Is Off the Market

You know, for Internet geeks and men with eyeballs all around the world, Maria Sharapova is sports' Marilyn Monroe. Tall, blond, beautiful, successful, athletic and -- just for added excitement -- the daughter of a dad who's 53 cards short of a full deck.

Well, get prepared to bash your unrealistic imagination, because Sharapova now has a boyfriend. The object of my undying jealousy lucky guy is none other than 25-year-old Charlie Ebersol who -- what do you know! -- is the son of NBC Sports Chairman and President Dick Ebersol.
