Fantasy Football Team Preview: Jets

Mark SanchezWith Fantasy Football season ready to kick in high gear, FanHouse is here to preview each and every team -- one per day until we've done them all.

Meet The ...
Offense in transition. With a new head coach along with rookies at quarterback and time-sharing running back, the best work of the Jets' offense will be in 2010 and beyond. They'll look to win with defense and taking care of the football in 2009, and you know that doesn't bode well when it comes to garnering massive amounts of fantasy points.

There are finds to be had on any team, but no Jets should be taken in the first three rounds of your draft -- and that's being conservative.

Jets Reach Agreement With First-Round Pick Mark Sanchez

Mark Sanchez and the Jets have agreed on a contractFLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets announced Wednesday afternoon that they have reached agreement on the terms of a contract with quarterback Mark Sanchez, their first-round pick from this year's draft.

The Jets did not release terms of the contract, but a person close to the situation confirmed to FanHouse that it's a five-year deal that includes about $28 million in guaranteed money and could be worth as much as $60 million total if Sanchez meets all of his incentives.

Sanchez's contract isn't close to the $41.7 million guaranteed that the No. 1 overall pick, former Georgia QB Matthew Stafford, got from the Lions. Nor does it match the $34.75 million guaranteed that last year's No. 3 overall pick, former Boston College QB Matt Ryan, got from the Falcons. But the deal for Sanchez (who was No. 5 overall this year) is sure to renew calls from the NFL and its owners for a rookie wage scale.

Mark Sanchez Practices (Screaming) In Front of a Mirror

Rookie QB Mark Sanchez is working on making his voice louder in an effort to win the starting job with the Jets.FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- There are so many things a rookie quarterback -- even one as hyped as Mark Sanchez -- can do better. He can be more accurate, less nervous, a quicker learner...any number of things.

Sanchez's coach wants him to be louder.

Jets coach Rex Ryan said Tuesday that one of the things Sanchez needs to work on in his preseason competition with Kellen Clemens for the team's starting quarterback job is his voice -- specifically the way in which he uses it to try and draw defenses offsides. Sanchez said today he was getting the message, and getting better.

Mark Sanchez's Growing Pains Continue At Jets Camp

First-round pick Mark Sanchez is having a lot thrown at him at New York Jets minicamp.FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Mark Sanchez is here working. He's not just doing interviews and charity dinners and GQ photo shoots. The fifth pick in last month's draft stayed at the Jets' practice facility until 10 p.m. Wednesday night, picking coaches' brains, watching video, studying playbooks ...

"Name it," Sanchez said. "I've made friends with the cleanup crew."

But all that work didn't keep Thursday from being another rough day along the learning curve for the former USC quarterback, who threw a couple of ugly interceptions, overthrew some passes in red zone drills and generally looked like ... well, a rookie who's learning the NFL ropes.

Rookie Touchdown Celebrations Looking Bleak for 2009

Here's the deal: Upper Deck got a bunch of NFL rookies together and offered up a free autographed Michael Jordan jersey to the guy with the best touchdown celebration.

Random, sure. But also worth the four minutes you would otherwise spend staring at an Excel spreadsheet while thinking about taking a smoke break.

Browns Sign Roderick Hood

It was nearly a year ago that then-Browns lost cornerback Daven Holly blew out his knee in organized team activities. He missed the 2008 season, and his absence, along with Gary Baxter never working out in Cleveland, meant the team had to rely on Brandon McDonald and Eric Wright.

Both were second-year players, and although Wright showed promise, McDonald was out his depth from the start. I wouldn't argue that losing Holly opened the flood gates on a four-win season -- Derek Anderson misfiring balls all over the yard gets the blue ribbon for that -- but it didn't help, either.

Shades of Namath as Sanchez Treads Into Dangerous Territory

Mark SanchezNEW YORK – All these years later, Joe Namath's scripted line still seems so naughty: "I'm so excited, I'm gonna get creamed," Namath says seconds before the feather-haired, mostly unknown starlet begins to suggestively caress his chin with shaving balm.

"Let Noxzema cream your face so the razor won't," coos Farrah Fawcett. "You've got a great pair of hands," Namath tells her, before ending the television commercial with a sly grin.

Jerricho Cotchery Would Welcome Plaxico Burress to Jets

Last November, then-Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress accidentally blew a hole in his thigh at a Manhattan night club. Not long after, the Giants "Keyshawn-ed" him, and in April they released the guy who hauled in the Super Bowl-deciding touchdown 14 months prior.

Burress has been in and out of court on illegal gun charges, and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg threatened to make an example of him. Assuming Burress avoids time in the slammer, there's a chance he returns to the NFL next season. And not just because his agent Drew Rosenhaus Tweets as much (while running wind sprints!). Some players would gladly welcome Plax into their locker room.

Kellen Clemens Knows Jets Job Is Mark Sanchez's to Lose

Kellen Clemens knows the deal. New head coach Rex Ryan spent the early part of the spring suggesting that the Jets would happily go into next season with Clemens and Brett Ratliff battling for the right to replace the eminently replaceable Brett Favre.

Pretty sure nobody believed that, including Clemens. The Jets were interested in Jay Cutler as he whined his way out of Denver, and when that didn't happen, they swapped first-round picks with the Browns and took Mark Sanchez (and sent Ratliff to Cleveland in the process).

Jets Fans Make Mark Sanchez NFL's Best Selling Rookie Jersey

Say this for Jets fans: When they're excited about their quarterback, they don't hesitate to put his name and number on their backs.

Nine months ago, Jets fans bought 20,000 Brett Favre Jets jerseys in the first couple of days after he was traded from the Packers, making his jerseys by far the best seller in the league at the time. But now the Jets have drafted quarterback Mark Sanchez, and Sanchez jerseys (which sell for $80) have become the best-selling rookie jerseys on the market.
