When the Bears acquired Jay Cutler almost two months ago, it became required for all journalists and bloggers alike to spew on and on about how awful Chicago's receiving corps is. CBS' Clark Judge still can't stop doing it, for example. The next chapter in the Bears Offseason Reporting Handbook is to try and connect every single available receiver to the Bears via free agency. Just as quickly as a name pops up, though, Bears general manager Jerry Angelo shoots it down.

The latest example in a long line is cocaine addict former Jags wideout Matt Jones. The talented yet troubled receiver caught 65 passes for 761 yards and a pair of touchdowns last season. Angelo, staying true to form, doesn't seem interested.

The stagnant and seemingly dried-up free-agent wide receiver market looks like it will receive a jolt. According to a published report, Matt Jones, formerly of the Jacksonville Jaguars, will avoid league suspension for violating terms of a court-ordered drug program.

The NFL did suspend Jones for the final three games of 2008 after he was charged with cocaine possession. Jones then violated his subsequent probation by drinking alcohol, landing him in jail for five days. Now, more than two months later and after Jacksonville released Jones, he apparently is at liberty to resume his playing career.

I can't help that I love Torry Holt -- he's a North Carolina State guy who has dominated as a wide receiver at every level. Additionally, he's one of the nicest guys in the NFL, and generally deviates from the typical showboating style that one sees in so many of the league's wideouts. But that doesn't mean Holt's finger -- which is bent in all sorts of silly ways -- is any less disgusting. Because, well, as shown in the video below, it's just gross. But the finger is also a good reminder of why he's so successful; I would bet that Matt Jones or Reggie Williams might just try and smoke off such an injury or something. One of the most intriguing prospects in this weekend's NFL draft is West Virginia quarterback Pat White. A sensational athlete, White dominated the Big East during his college career and enters this weekend as a man without a position. Can he overcome his lack of size and succeed as a quarterback in the NFL? Will he became the latest quarterback-to-wide receiver project and follow in the footsteps of players like Antwaan Randle-El? Or will he bring back the "Slash" position, combined with the recent fad that is the wildcat offense, and become a unique weapon that gives opposing defensive coordinators fits?

Jimmy Smith was arrested this afternoon at a gas station in Jacksonville, Florida, and according to a TMZ report, has been booked into a nearby detention center on four different drug charges: two felonies and two misdemeanors, in addition to driving with a suspended license.

Smith was allegedly carrying multiple illegal substances, was photographed in handcuffs at the gas station while officers escorted him to and from the bathroom and is reportedly being held on $5006 bond in downtown Jacksonville.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are on the brink ... of something. Last year we thought it was a Super Bowl run. This year it could be collapse. Or maybe mediocrity. That's the beauty of parity, injuries and scheduling in the NFL -- a full-blown title contender can go to also-ran and then back to title contender quicker than Blake and Antoine can execute a patented two snaps and a twist.

The Jaguars hope that the 2009 NFL Draft will help them execute that second 180-degree turn, but in order to do that, they'll need it to be ... perfect. (Sorry, I've been watching way too much CSI: Miami lately.)

Reggie Williams and Matt Jones already had one major commonality: they are each first-round wide receiver busts for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Now, reportedly, they have another: both have been arrested for cocaine possession.

According to a recent report from Fox Sports' Alex Marvez, Williams was arrested Sunday night in Houston on felony charges of cocaine possession and was tasered by two off-duty police officers who were providing security at the Open City Bar and Lounge.

Heading into last season, the Jacksonville Jaguars brought in Troy Williamson and Jerry Porter in an attempt to give quarterback David Garrard some outside weapons. The Jags, as we all know, had torn through the league in 2007 with a stellar running game and defense. The passing attack was efficient, but not explosive.

Needless to say, Porter and Williamson didn't work out as intended. With the release of their leading receiver from last year -- the troubled Matt Jones -- the passing attack is in desperate need of a shot in the arm. Enter Torry Holt and Mark Sanchez.

Matt Jones has been out of work for three days now, but rangy wide receivers who can run -- even the mediocre, seemingly apathetic ones -- are forever at a premium. And that probably means he won't be jobless for long.

The New York Daily News' Bob Glauber writes that the Jets and Cowboys -- two teams in need of big-play threats -- could be interested in Jones' services. It sounds like nothing more than speculation at this point, but the Jets gave Laveranues Coles his release earlier this month, and they don't have a legit No. 1 wideout currently on the roster. They also don't have a legit No. 1 quarterback, so maybe it doesn't matter.
