At UNC, Heavy Player Losses Won't Lead to Many Losses

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The preseason media poll that predicted North Carolina would share the Atlantic Coast Conference championship with Duke was still hours from being released. The national polls that picked the Tar Heels sixth (by the media) and fourth (by the coaches) were more than a week away.

But Roy Williams didn't feel a need to wait to issue a disclaimer about the early exuberance over his defending national champions.

"The expectations of our young kids, and the way they were evaluated or ranked as a recruiting class, puts a lot of expectations on kids who have never done it,'' Williams said last month at the ACC's media day, on the day his team -- missing the top four players and 74 percent of the points from the group that had waxed Michigan State in the national title game -- split the voting for the conference title.

Bouncin' Around is NBA FanHouse's weekly insider notebook.

There is a good reason the Orlando Magic don't seem too concerned over losing Rashard Lewis for the first 10 games of the regular season because of his suspension for violating the NBA's Anti-Drug Agreement.

They won't need him.

Of those 10 games, only two will be against teams with a record last season that was better than .500. Yes, it would have been great to have your best shooter in the lineup for that one ESPN game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, but they could beat New Jersey and Oklahoma City with Dwight Howard and four Summer League players.

London Calling Mike Krzyzewski in 2012

It's three more years for Team USA and Mike Krzyzewski, according to multiple media reports.

The 62-year-old coach, who skippered the so-called "Redeem Team" to an 8-0 record and a gold medal in the Beijing Olympics, is expected to be tabbed for an encore performance later this month, a story first reported by the Boston Globe's Marc J. Spears.

Krzyzewski, a former captain in the U.S. Army and coach at West Point, called the job the "ultimate honor" when he was originally named to the position in October, 2005, and quickly set about revamping Team USA's image, following disappointing finishes at the world championships in 2002 and the Olympics in 2004. Krzyzewski finished the Olympic cycle with a 36-1 record in international competition and a host of gold medals draped around his neck after Team USA defeated Spain in the final game in Beijing.

ORLANDO -- Kobe or Lebron?

Who do you like more? And who would you want taking the final shot?

Not really a debate for the NBA Finals because LeBron isn't here, but because the only man who has coached both of them - and coached them together - was in Amway Arena before Game 3, it had to be asked.

Kobe Bryant was the NBA Most Valuable Player in 2008. LeBron James was the MVP in 2009. So who is the better player?

"Well, they are both on my team,'' said Mike Krzyzewski, coach of the USA Olympic Team that won a gold medal with them in 2008. "So I'm not going there.''

In an effort to talk about something college basketball-related other than scandals in the summer, let's talk best current coaches. We'll attempt to order the top 25 current coaches in the nation. This is about the present and the future, not the distant past. What a guy did in the mid-90s doesn't matter near as much as the direction his program is currently headed. Past pedigree also matters, to an extent. For the perfect mix of past accomplishments with present achievement and a paved road for future success, look no further than the man atop the list.

John Wall, the 18-year-old prized high school basketball recruit and consensus No. 1 point guard in his class, needed 14 months of clean living to be a certain high pick in the NBA draft. And there was no reason to think he'd get in any sort of trouble right now, primarily because he hasn't committed to a college yet; in fact, he's allowed his recruitment to drag on painfully.

Seriously, Stephen Colbert's ability to make any and all confrontations between famous authors, politicians and now college basketball coaches funny is a thing of beauty. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski was on the Report Tuesday, talking about his new book and, thanks to Colbert, he somehow wound up comparing Stephen to LeBron James.

It isn't any surprise that since Brett Favre announced he'd be done with football (umm, the fourth time), the quarterback situation with the Packers would be tumultuous.

Nobody thought it would get to this. Even with Aaron Rodgers doing whatever he can in Green Bay to win people over, rumors are flying around that the Packers have worked out Duke basketball player Greg Paulus. Yes, that was "Duke basketball player" you just read.

DETROIT - The last North Carolinian to climb the ladder Monday night and clip a piece of the championship net for a keepsake was the head basketball coach, Roy Williams. He went up twice. The first time, he snipped just a strand. The second time, he severed everything that was left. It was quite apropos.

After all, there isn't anyone in Chapel Hill more deserving of all the success that has come to Tar Heels' basketball in the last few years than their dadgum, corny coach from Asheville, N.C., the '72 graduate who went away for awhile to Kansas before returning to his alma mater six years.
