Panthers 17, Raiders 6: Always Finding New Ways to Lose

Normally, when teams hold an opposing quarterback to 7-for-27 passing and force four interceptions, they come out of the game on the winning end. Most teams, however, aren't the Oakland Raiders. Despite Jake Delhomme putting up the numbers shown above, the Panthers still managed to walk out of Oakland with a 17-6 win, in front of an announced crowd of 47,888, far short of a sellout. Games like this might be why guys are so willing to pay their way out of Oakland, I imagine.

So, anyway, as for the game itself ... I suppose it should be looked at as a positive that the Raiders saw, like, a 6000% increase in their first downs from a week ago, and actually managed to register a couple of field goals. However, when you consider how Delhomme, with four interceptions, tried to give the game to them, it has to be incredibly frustrating to still lose by 11.

Andrew Walter, making his first start of the season in place of the injured JaMarcus Russell, did his best to maintain the level of play Raiders fans have become accustomed to at the quarterback position, completing 14-of-32 for 143 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions.

Carolina BBQs Kansas City to Take Lead in NFC South

Tony Gonzalez passed Shannon Sharpe for all-time receiving yardage for a tight end. That is the beginning and the end of the good news for the Kansas City Chiefs today.

The Carolina Panthers just drilled the Chiefs, 34-0, and took sole possession of first place in the NFC South.

The stat of the game isn't how the Panthers outgained the Chiefs 441 to 127. It isn't that this was the biggest shutout in Panthers history. It is the fact that Carolina held Larry Johnson to just two yards rushing.

Yep. Just one week after nearly topping the 200 yard mark, LJ gained just two yards on seven carries. He now joins quite a list of backs who failed to hit the century mark rushing against the Panthers: LaDainian Tomlinson, Matt Forte, Adrian Peterson and Michael Turner.

The Chiefs passing game was a joke, too. Damon Huard threw for just 86 yards before he was pulled for Tyler Thigpen. The Chiefs gained the smallest amount of yardage in 22 years.

Carolina couldn't relate to KC's problems since their offense was doing anything they wanted.

Fantasy Value Machine: Thanks Carson!

Value Machine checks out the overall perceived value of fantasy players. If you want to commit a fantasy felony, you'll sell high on the up arrow guys and buy low on the down arrow guys.

Hopefully you traded Rashard Mendenhall, as we insinuated last week when we said his value will never be higher. Remember, fantasy sports are all about value and perception is reality in between games. Many owners flocked to Mendenhall last week because he was "replacing" Willie Parker. His perceived value skyrockets, which means it's the perfect time to spin him. Just keep this in mind as we move forward.

Top week four : Laveranues Coles ... He busted loose for 30 plus points in most leagues. The problem is that he didn't receive the majority of Brett Favre's attention and rarely will this result in three scores. Jerricho Cotchery, Chansi Stuckey, and Dustin Keller all take looks away from Coles. This was a one week ride, so hopefully you enjoyed it and can move him for good value this week.

Top week four : Carson Palmer ... He comes off his one good game of the season -- against a solid defense, no less -- and decides to not fully disclose his injury. Owners found out he couldn't go right before game time, and surely some guys were screwed over by this. Keep an eye on his health, because if he can come back, his owners will surely be pissed enough to deal him for less than market value.

Studs and Duds, Week Four: Matt Bryant Is Tougher Than Us All

Each week in the NFL, there are players that impress and players that distress. One week a certain quarterback might toss four touchdowns and run around with his finger in the air while the next he's laying on his back, holding his face-mask as the other team returns one of his three interceptions for the game-winning score. With that in mind, here's our new feature, Studs and Duds
:

Here's Week 4 at a glance, where we point out the horses destined for the Kentucky Derby and jeer those headed to the glue factory.

Studs

Matt Bryant, K Tampa Bay (3 - 3 FG, 3 - 3 XP) -- A day after burying his 3-month-old son, Matthew Tryson, Bryant decided to suit up for the Buccaneers, and in an emotional battle most could never imagine, didn't miss a kick all game, helping Tampa Bay beat Green Bay. Some things in this world make absolutely no sense, this being one of them, but the toughness of Matt and his wife is something to be respected. Amazing effort Matt, we are all sorry for your loss.

Waiver Wire Wonders: Week 4

Weeding through those unwieldy waiver wires requires a keen eye and a quick trigger. Thus, Waiver Wire Wonders provides a weekly snapshot of players worthy of consideration who should be available on a good portion of league waiver wires. Enjoy those pickups...

Week 4 provided more of the same - big breakout games by our waiver wire friends. Not as many of this week's crop of eye-popping stat producers are necessarily worthy adds to the roster at this point however, so we'll filter through the noise and bring you the music.

Muhsin Muhammad (Carolina Panthers) - Looks like the Smothers Brothers are back together. After years together as a dynamic duo in Carolina, Muhammad parted for Chicago. Fast forward a couple of disappointing seasons filled with lots of whining and Moosh is in step again with Jake Delhomme. Although, Steve Smith should develop into the primary target, don't underestimate this veteran receiver and the great chemistry with his QB.

Steve Breaston - (Arizona Cardinals) Breaston actually looks like a great pickup at this point. Unfortunately, a big reason for Breaston's value uptick is the vicious helmet-to-helmet hit that Anquan Boldin took. And it looks like Boldin could be out for the near future. Breaston racked up nine catches for 122 yards with Boldin in the game, so he could assume a big role without him in the lineup.

Panthers' Defense Shines in 24-9 Win Over Rival Falcons

If the Carolina Panthers are going to get back into the playoffs, they will need to continue their defensive intensity. Carolina held the NFL's leading rusher Michael Turner to just 56 yards and didn't let young Matt Ryan get comfortable in their 24-9 over the Falcons.

Their offense had quite a day, too. Jake Delhomme threw for 294 yards and two TDs (one to each Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad). After Smith's touchdown, he gave the ball to cornerback Ken Lucas. It was Lucas who Smith pummelled during a training camp fight that led to a two-game suspension for Smith.

With Smith getting a ton of attention from Atlanta, Muhammad looked like the player from his first go around in Charlotte. He caught eight passes for 147 yards and a huge touchdown in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

You'd swear that this was 2003 again and Stephen Davis would run out on the field at any moment. Panther fans will just have to do with the combo of Jonathan Stewart (who scored his rookie leading fourth TD) and DeAngelo Williams. The two equally shared duties and combined for 109 yards.

Week Two Fantasy Value Machine: Jay Culter Legit, Even Without Help

Value Machine checks the current value of non-obvious names -- no Tony Romo or Brian Westbrook here -- for owners looking to scope out the trade market.

For the record, the most egregious thing about Ed Hochuli's snafu is being overlooked by everyone. I officiate high school -- I understand I'm far less qualified to complain than an NFL official, but this does make me more qualified than someone sitting at their computer claiming the "refs cheated" -- and the worst part about the call was the fact that the ball went backwards. Even if Hochuli thought, in real time, Jay Cutler's arm went forward, the ball still went backwards. A backwards pass is a loose ball. How the referee can't see that from even with the QB is beyond me. People keep talking about the whistle, but it's not acceptable to blow it there. I still respect him as an official, because human error is part of the game. Human error like this, though, shouldn't happen in such a high level game.

Even without the extra points, that he never should have accrued, Cutler had another big game. With two young, studly receiving speedsters and a reliable tight end, this isn't likely to change anytime soon. This time, the Broncos actually played a legitimate defense. You don't want to expect around 30 points a week, but it's very reasonable to start expecting 20. Jay Cutler is your top for week two.

Panthers and Bears Are Pleased to Announce Their Importance to the NFC This Year

These two teams matter. A whole lot, actually. And while not many people would have guessed it -- certainly a Panthers homer or a Bears fan might have mentioned something -- they are going to be hanging around for a while, barring injury.

For the Bears, their defense has to stay healthy. And for the Panthers, Jake Delhomme's arm has to hold up. I know that's a standard, sweeping generalization, but it's true.

Oh, and the new-look Panthers offensive line, which mauled the Bears in the second half Sunday, needs to not get hurt as well. If they can avoid serious injury, Jonathan Stewart is going to be something special. He was an absolute bruiser during the second half Sunday, plowing through Bears defenders en route to two touchdowns and 77 yards on just 14 carries.

So, yeah, memo to John Fox: give Stewart more carries, especially against a team like the Bears where force > fancy.

Let's All Please Welcome Muhsin to the 10,000 Yard Club, Naturally Against the Bears

With an eleven yard slant (that ended up being meaningless) Muhsin Muhammad, better known as Moooooooooooooose, became the seventh active wideout to catch 10,000 yards worth of passes over his career.

Moose signed with the Panthers in the offseason after a tumultuous few seasons with the Bears. And by "tumultuous", I of course mean, "miserably being overthrown by Rex Grossman".

Of course, the irony of this catch and this milestone can't -- and won't be lost on anyone -- because it came against the Bears. Muhsin got straight paid by Chicago with a monster six year contract but was released following 2007 and a bunch of relatively unproductive seasons.

Then, early this year, he told anyone that would listen that "Chicago is where receivers go to die", causing the Bears defense, and entire organization really, to flinch a little bit. Which may explain why the Panthers have yet to score heading into the two minute warning of Sunday's game.

Nevertheless, Moose is now part of a pretty elite club -- only 29 players in the history of the NFL have ever reached 10,000 yards, and regardless of what the Bears think of him, he'll always be beloved in Carolina.

Believe It: Carolina or Chicago Will Start the Season at Surprising 2-0

An NFC team walks into the stadium of an AFC power. Despite the long odds, the NFC team comes out with a surprising victory. Now people are buzzing about the possibility of them being a playoff team.

Those things have happened to the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears last week. The Panthers went into San Diego and shocked the Chargers with a last minute touchdown. The Bears went into Indianapolis and spoiled the opening of Lucas Oil Field with an impressive display of Bears Football (running and defense).

Now one of them will be 2-0 come Monday morning as the two face off in Charlotte on Sunday.

Both teams are sort of similar. Both were recent Super Bowl losers, their once vaunted defenses fell on some hard times last year while their offenses fell off the map. Both have speedy game changers.

Chicago showed its defensive ability was not gone ... but very much alive. They pressured and confused Peyton Manning and the Colts, created a few scores of their own and looked like the swarming nest of a few years ago. Carolina created their own opportunities by turning over San Diego a few times and returning one fumble for a touchdown.
