Dwyane Wade Will Do the Official Derrick Rose/Michael Beasley Happy Dance

Since Dwyane Wade hasn't been able to do anything relevant to the game of basketball for many months, he and the Heat figure he might as well act the part of the figurehead. Wade will represent the Miami Heat at the NBA Lottery next Tuesday, May 20th, during the televised announcement of the results on ESPN.

The Heat have 250 of the 1,000 viable 4-number combinations available in the official drawing, which is held two and a half hours before the televised announcement, making them the frontrunner for the #1 spot. It's important for Miami's season ticket drive that Wade maintains an active, positive role as the face of the franchise. This provides him an opportunity to show that he is committed to the future of the Heat, as he welcomes the probable opportunity to draft one of the two top players available in the draft, either one of which would help the Heat tremendously next season. Wade is currently recovering from (another) knee injury in Chicago, but feels he should be healthy enough to martyr himself play in the Olympic games this summer.

If the Heat manage to walk out with what is statistically probable for them, it could be the start of a new era in Miami. If the Heat somehow manage to fall out of the top two picks? It's not going to be good for that whole "Dwyane Wade is NOT cursed" sentiment.

The Real Winners of the Draft Lottery: The Atlanta Hawks

The NBA buzz this week has been all about how Portland and Seattle struck gold. Yeah, with a chance to draft to of the highest rated draft prospects in the last ten years, I'd say that they both did pretty well for themselves. However, there is probably one other team that feels like they hit the jackpot on Tuesday. That team is the Atlanta Hawks.

As a provision of the Joe Johnson sign and trade deal, the Hawks would have had to send the Phoenix Suns their first round draft pick unless the pick ended up in the top three. With the Hawks finishing with the fourth best record, the odds were that they'd end up with a pick no higher than number four and end up having to send the pick to the Suns. Everyone (myself included) was already making plans for what Phoenix, not Atlanta should do with their potential first round pick.

The thought of losing their first round pick in a draft this deep was almost too much for their front office staff to handle. Things became so tense that Hawks GM Billy Knight didn't even watch the draft. Instead he sent fellow Hawks front office mate, Dominique Wilkins to represent the team at the draft lottery.

Jerry West Has a Right to Be Upset About the Draft Lottery

After reading Brian Berger's Sports Business Radio Blog yesterday, I became a little bit upset. In the post Mr. Berger criticized current Memphis Grizzlies GM Jerry West for these comments following the draft lottery:
"It's like pitching pennies. It's grossly unfair to the team, but I've said it before, I don't think the lottery is fair. I never liked it. I don't think it's a good system at all, period.

"There have been a lot of picks in the lottery that have [failed]. There are two in the lottery this year that are not going to fail. There are two superstars in the draft. I think for the teams fortunate enough to get them, the fortunes of their franchises have changed forever."
Berger categorized the comments as "sour grapes", stating that Mr. West only made the comments because his team lost the lottery. However, being the media watch dog that I am, I know that Jerry West had been urging the league to change its current lottery system long before Tuesday's draft lottery. In fact, in a podcast with Chad Ford back in early April, Mr. West spent half of the interview talking about how terrible he thought the system was.
