Haas Upsets Djokovic, Will Meet Roger Federer in Semifinals

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -- Tommy Haas's dream Wimbledon run continued on Wednesday when he unseated fourth seed Novak Djokovic 7-5, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 in their quarter-final at the All England Club.

The German 24th seed, a first-time quarter-finalist here, broke in game 11 of the opening set and served out to take the lead after 45 minutes.

Djokovic wasted three set points in the second set tiebreak before Haas wrapped it up 8-6 before the Serb mounted a comeback by taking the third.

Andy Roddick Reaches Quarterfinals at Wimbledon, Will Face Hewitt

Over the years, talk of Andy Roddick finally "getting there" has been inaccurate. The top-ranked American has reached the finals at Wimbledon twice, but despite a brief moment in the first set of the finals in 2004, Andy has always seemed a touch short of championship caliber.

Maybe not this year. Roddick took down No. 20 Thomas Berdych 7-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a match that was hardly competitive after the first set tiebreaker. Andy rode his 24 aces to easy service games, never even facing a break point, but the comfort he has shown with his ground strokes is what has really stood out in 2009.

Djokovic Reaches Halle Final

HALLE, Germany -- Novak Djokovic defeated qualifier Olivier Rochus 7-6 (7), 6-4 Saturday to reach the Gerry Weber Open final, where he will play Tommy Haas in a bid for his first grass-court title.

Haas rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the third set to beat Philipp Kohlschreiber 2-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) in an all-German semifinal at this Wimbledon tuneup. Haas, ranked No. 2 in 2002 but now No. 41, will be playing his first final since winning in Memphis, Tenn., in 2007.

French Open Picks: Will Nadal Fall?

Rafael Nadal / Roger Federer
They had to gang up on Rafael Nadal. It was a tag-team effort in Madrid: First, Novak Djokovic softened him up with a four-hour death match. Nadal won. The next day, Roger Federer cleaned up on a tired Nadal with a sore knee.

But the point is, Nadal did fall on clay. It can be done! No one knew that for sure.

So we start the French Open on Sunday, the year's second major. Nadal has won it four years in a row. Can he be stopped now?

Federer Smacks Nadal for Madrid Title

FedererEntering Sunday, world No. 2 Roger Federer had lost five straight matches to top-ranked Rafael Nadal, including epic five-set title matches at Wimbledon and the Australian Open. The streak looked a safe bet to roll to six in the Madrid Tennis Masters final -- a meeting that took place on a clay court, Nadal's specialty, and in front of his Spanish countrymen.

Federer had other ideas. He overwhelmed the home-standing Nadal for an impressive 6-4, 6-4 victory. It was his first win over Nadal since the Barclays ATP World Tour in November of 2007.

"He was simply better than me," Nadal said.

Djokovic Serves Up Personality ... With Nipple Tassels

The nipple tassels were a little disturbing, I have to admit. Novak Djokovic, the world's third-ranked tennis player starts rolling up his shirt, and you don't know exactly what's about to happen. And he keeps rolling, and then ...

Well, it was impressive how he could get them to twirl in sync like that. I probably could have done without the granny-on-Djokovic stuff, too, as an old lady rubbed oil on his back, and ...

What's Eating Roger Federer?

He didn't break into tears the way he did in Australia. He didn't smash his racquet the way he did in Miami.

But the mystery of Roger Federer continued Saturday in Rome, even without a major demonstration. He looked like Roger Federer again, The Roger Federer version we had been used to for years. But then, up 6-4, 3-1 over Novak Djokovic, Federer fell apart, missing simple shots and losing 11 of the next 14 games.

Djokovic, ranked No. 3 in the world, won 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to Sunday's final against Rafael Nadal.

"All of a sudden, it became a different match ..." Federer said. "I usually don't give away opportunities like this."

Andy Murray Wins Third Title of Season

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) -- Andy Murray hit second serves for aces, slipped passing shots through the narrowest openings and rarely made a mistake.

It was a performance worthy of a trophy, and Murray became the first Brit to win the Sony Ericsson Open by defeating Novak Djokovic 6-2, 7-5 Sunday.

Roger Federer's Frustrations Boil Over

Roger Federer's struggles continue. And the once-impeccable and unflappable champion is showing signs of cracking.

Trailing in the third set to Novak Djokovic in the semifinals of the Sony Ericsson Open, the 13-time Grand Slam champion unleashed his frustration on his racquet after missing a surefire winner into the net. The mangled mess of a racquet did not change the momentum of the match, as Djokovic cruised to a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory.

Later in the third set, the usually reserved Swiss -- we expect this from Andy Roddick or Fernando Gonzalez or Lleyton Hewitt, but not Federer -- flipped his empty water bottles behind his seat in disgust. He even forgot to shake the umpire's hand after the match. Totally out of character and a window into Federer's fragile state.

Roger Federer on Novak Djokovic: 'If You're Not Fit Enough, Get Out of Here'

As Tuesday's Australian Open match between Andy Roddick and Novak Djokovic was nearing an end, and Djokovic was moving around the court with the grace of a dump truck, the ESPN commentators asked an open question about the Serb's conditioning: "What will his peers say off the record?"

It was the Serb's fourth retired match in a Grand Slam, and Djokovic (right) is only 21. Also, coincidentally, Roddick had called out Djokovic for being a little bit of an injury-milker at the U.S. Open last year, so this issue has been raised before. Well, no less an authority than Roger Federer spoke about the matter, and it wasn't off the record. He flat out said Djokovic needs to do something to be more fit.
