On Second Thought 2.0: Wide Receivers

A month ago, Matt Snyder took a look at the first edition of the FanHouse fantasy rankings and identified several players whom he felt deserved a second look, either ranking too high or too low. This week in On Second Thought, I'll do the same for the second version of our rankings.

If you can grab one of our top four at the position, well done. The next tier, filled with late-second round and early-third round picks, offers a solid group of WR1s. Don't wait too long for your top WR though, as many of the WRs that are drafted in the late-third and fourth rounds carry question marks. For my draft, if I can get two of the WRs in our top 12, I'll figure to have one of the best WR groups in the league. If I can only get one, I'll likely wait until at least 20 WRs are gone before taking three guys in the 20-35 range.

On Second Thought 2.0: Running Backs

There's two things you have to do when drafting running backs. With your top dog at the position, you absolutely have to take a guy that doesn't bust. A lot of people chase breakouts with titles in their eyes, but the first contenders to fall by the wayside are ones who don't get solid, consistent production out of their top RB. Before you call out a name on Draft Day, be absolutely sure that your RB selection is a near-lock for top-ten numbers.

On Second Thought 2.0: Quarterbacks

Quarterback this year has a very distinct top tier and an equally distinct second tier. As such, I don't any issue with the top seven QBs on our list. One of them may be a spot high or low, but those seven QBs should be the top ones off the board. If you don't land one of the seven, I'd wait to grab two QBs in the 12-18 ranking range instead of panicking and using a high pick on one of the next four or five.

On Second Thought: Tight End and D/ST

On Second Thought is Matt Snyder's look back at the initial FanHouse staff rankings, which were compiled nearly a month ago. As we all know, fantasy players' value changes frequently, even when no games are being played.

After the big three positions in fantasy football, tight end is next in importance. Since you only play one tight end, though, we'll also fill this entry out by discussing some fantasy defenses as well.

Formerly a relatively unpredictable position with just a small handful of reliable WR1-types, wide receiver now sports a solid upper-echelon. With the overemphasis on the pass game in the NFL, you must have one elite wideout to compete in fantasy football.

There is also good depth. It seems to me most of the shaky players here in terms of good value are in the teens. Meaning after the elite wideout, you should let everyone fill out their WR2 while waiting to stockpile good value guys in the seven and eight round range.

On Second Thought: Running Backs

As teams continue to use two-backs systems, running back has become an increasingly deep and unpredictable position. Thus, you don't have the predictable first two rounds of years past. Injuries and the progress of young backs will shuffle backfields throughout the preseason. As that happens, the fantasy values of the running backs continually shift. Let's take a look.

On Second Thought: Quarterbacks

The best thing about the build up to the next NFL season is the exact same thing as the worst. If that makes sense. It's fun to dissect every aspect of everything, but it can also be maddening when you consider we're still just under three months until an actual, real NFL game is played. Regardless, things constantly change in terms of fantasy football draft value.

What I'll do in On Second Thought is take a look at the rankings we compiled as a staff and point out which players I believe we collectively ranked too high and vice versa. This isn't a slap in the face to my colleagues, as some of the rankings I didn't like were my fault (you'll see one here). Plus, we started working on them a month ago. Things change.
