2009 Offensive Line Rankings

While the offensive line might not represent a direct draft day decision for your roster, few areas of knowledge can offer a competitive advantage in fantasy football like having a good grasp of the various units of trench soldiers around the league. So with that in mind, each year at FanHouse we break down every NFL team's offensive lines into five tiers: the crème de la crème, the highly competent, the serviceable, the grim, and the bunk.

Jay Cutler Introduced in Halas Hall

The man who Bears fans hope will be the first franchise quarterback in recent memory, Jay Cutler, was introduced officially as a Chicago Bear at a press conference late Friday afternoon.

Bears Shouldn't Stop With Cutler, Pace

After the Bears made the announcement of their franchise-shattering acquisition of Jay Cutler, they didn't rest. Within a few hours, they announced they had also agreed to terms with venerable left tackle Orlando Pace. I'll admit, I was overly excited about the two new Bears, as were all my Bears fans friends -- which is weird, usually at least one of us disagrees about player movement. Make no mistake about it, though. We aren't delusional. This team is far from complete and the die-hards know it.

With the team still a decent amount below the salary cap and several holes left to fill for 2009, here's what I think the Bears should do.

City of Weak Shoulders Finally Lands a Real Quarterback

CHICAGO -- So the Summer Olympics must be coming in 2016. And a minefield of potholes soon will be magically filled. And the Cubs will win a World Series for the first time since, oh, your grandparents' grandparents were double-dating in Henry Ford's Model T. And those wicked, face-eating winters will be replaced by pleasant, sunny, balmy, gorgeous ... all right, I'm obviously overcome by shock.

Fantasy Spin: Jay Cutler to the Bears

The Broncos traded Jay Cutler to the Chicago Bears today, ending what was a loooooong and painful saga between he and head coach Josh McDaniels.

In exchange, the Broncos received a 2009 first-round pick, a 2010 first-round pick, a 2009 third-round pick and a player to be named later Kyle Orton. As always, there are fantasy implications:

Orlando Pace Pays Bears a Visit

Seven-time Pro Bowl tackle Orlando Pace was in Chicago Monday, meeting with the Bears' front office. The 33-year-old was released a few weeks ago by the St. Louis Rams, the only franchise he's ever played for. Injuries have limited Pace's immense ability the last few years. He hasn't played a full slate since 2005, though he did suit up 14 times last season.

The move would make sense for the Bears. They have a deficiency at this position. While there are four studly offensive tackles in the upcoming draft, it's very possible none of the four fall to the Bears. Signing Pace would give them an opportunity to sniff out a pass rusher or possession receiver in the first round.

Not Many Teams Interested in Torry Holt

When the Cowboys released Terrell Owens, teams around the league couldn't issue their "Yeah, we'll pass on pursuing T.O." statements fast enough. Obviously, the Bills weren't one of those teams, but the speed at which other organizations expressed their lack of interest was dizzying, and proof that maybe Owens' talent was no longer enough to overcome his behavior in the eyes of most NFL front offices.

Except that such a line of reasoning doesn't explain why virtually the same thing is happening to Torry Holt, released Friday by the Rams. The 32-year-old, seven-time Pro Bowler continues to play at a high level, but St. Louis, a team with five victories in two seasons and now in rebuilding mode, cleared salary cap space by dropping Holt (as well as left tackle Orlando Pace). It happens; the NFL is a business, after all.

Rams Finally Release Torry Holt

After weeks and weeks of waiting -- a period of time which included Torry Holt asking for his release and the Rams letting him know he wasn't welcome to workout with them -- the Rams have done the inevitable. Holt, one of the best receivers in franchise history, has been cut by the St. Louis Rams.

The move, along with cutting Orlando Pace earlier this week, will save the Rams upwards of $14 million in cap space. The Greatest Show on Turf is becoming more and more of a distant memory, as the roster is transformed to the liking of new head coach, Steve Spagnuolo.

Rams Land Fullback Mike Karney

Assuming the Rams don't screw up the second-overall draft pick, this has really been a great offseason. It started with hiring an up-and-coming coach in this league, Steve Spagnuolo. They've added depth to the secondary, shored up the middle of the offensive line, and now have signed a great fullback.

Mike Karney, who had previously spent his entire five-year career with the New Orleans Saints, will now be helping clear holes for Steven Jackson.

St. Louis Rams Cut Orlando Pace

The St. Louis Rams have released future Hall of Fame offensive tackle Orlando Pace, a staple of the organization who was the first pick of the 1997 NFL draft, made seven Pro Bowls and won a Super Bowl ring with the team. The decision to release Pace is no surprise after the team told Pace he wasn't welcome at offseason workouts.
