Paulo Thiago to Stay on UFC 106 Card, Facing Jacob Volkmann

Brazilian welterweight Paulo Thiago, who was left without an opponent when Thiago Alves was transferred to fight Jon Fitch at UFC 107, will remain on the UFC 106 card, taking on Minnesota Martial Arts Academy's Jacob Volkmann.

Thiago's manager Wallid Ismail has informed Brazil's Terra Magazine of the update, though the matchup becomes one of four fights yet to be officially announced for the Nov. 21 card.

Penn-Sanchez, Mir-Kongo, Alves-Thiago Set for UFC 107 in Memphis

The UFC formally announced Tuesday the first three bouts for UFC 107 on Dec. 12 at the FedExForum in Memphis: BJ Penn vs. Diego Sanchez, Frank Mir vs. Cheick Kongo and Thiago Alves vs. Paulo Thiago.

The promotion had booked the show with the location in mind to coincide with Memphis-born light heavyweight Quinton "Rampage" Jackson's expected fight against Rashad Evans as the culmination of their coaching feud on The Ultimate Fighter 10 series. However, Jackson's film pursuits will stall the grudge match and Penn vs. Sanchez was moved from UFC 105 to UFC 107 to have a championship bout round out the final UFC event of 2009.

Jon Fitch Talks Facial Hair, Brock Lesnar and Who He Would 'Love' to Face Next

The last time we spoke to Jon Fitch he talked about getting engaged the day after UFC 100. But that wasn't the only exciting thing to happen to him that weekend. Fitch won his second fight in a row (and 17th in 18 fights), defeating Paul Thiago via unanimous decision. The victory surely meant a lot to Fitch because Thiago had shockingly defeated his American Kickboxing Academy team member, Josh Koscheck, in February.

FanHouse spoke to Fitch about what's next for him and the funky goatee he sported on ESPN.com's MMA Live after the bout. The full interview is below.

Jon Fitch Celebrates UFC 100 Victory by Getting Engaged

It's safe to say that Jon Fitch will never forget UFC 100 weekend.

First, he defeated the previously undefeated Paulo Thiago via unanimous decision Saturday night. And then he proposed to his long-time girlfriend, Michele Cao, on Sunday.

"It's been coming for a long time," Fitch told FanHouse on Wednesday, "We've been together for five years. I've been planning -- wasn't sure how I was going to do it -- for a month or so with her mother, who helped me pick out the ring and stuff. The time was just right. I had the ring with me, so I proposed on Sunday."

The fight will start around 12:30 AM ET, after the two title fights, and the live blog begins below.

MMA Upset of the Half Year

We've been handing out our half-year MMA awards, so here's my take on the biggest upset of the last six months.

As is often the case in MMA, there were plenty of upsets to choose from. But at the end of the day, I had to go with Joe Warren defeating Kid Yamamoto via split decision at Dream.9 on May 26 (part one of the fight is above; part two is here.)

MMA Top 10 Welterweights: After UFC 99, What's Next for Mike Swick?

Mike Swick had another impressive victory Saturday, beating Ben Saunders at UFC 99, and in my view solidifying his status as a Top 5 welterweight in MMA.

And that means that if Georges St Pierre beats Thiago Alves next month at UFC 100, Swick will hold the distinction of being the best welterweight in the UFC that St. Pierre hasn't already beaten. That means Swick could be very close to a title shot, even though I think he probably needs one more win over a Top 10 opponent, like maybe Matt Hughes or Dan Hardy, who entered my Top 10 after beating Marcus Davis Saturday.

My full list of the Top 10 welterweights in MMA is below.

UFC 100: Jon Fitch vs. Paulo Thiago on Lesnar-Mir, St. Pierre-Alves Undercard?

A welterweight battle between Jon Fitch and Paulo Thiago is likely to be added to the undercard of UFC 100, the major Ultimate Fighting Championship event that will be headlined by a heavyweight title fight featuring Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir and a welterweight title fight featuring Georges St Pierre vs. Thiago Alves.

Fitch vs. Thiago is a fascinating fight. I consider Fitch the No. 2 welterweight in the world, behind only St. Pierre. I really don't know what to think about Thiago, who's 11-0 and coming off a stunning first-round knockout of Josh Koscheck. But we'll learn a lot about Thiago if we see him fight Fitch.

UFC 95: Josh Koscheck Doesn't Know and Doesn't Care About Paulo Thiago

In preparing for his fight with B.J. Penn at UFC 94, Georges St. Pierre came up with a cunning approach that included everything from hours of studying film of Penn's fights to consulting with kinesiologists who helped him develop a strategy that would force Penn to overuse his shoulders, building up lactic acid and fatiguing his muscles.

St. Pierre had a masterful strategy, but not everyone thinks MMA fighters need good game plans. For the alternate point of view, consider what Josh Koscheck says about his upcoming fight against Paulo Thiago at UFC 95.
