Bobby Cox Has Seen Crazier Managers Than Phillip Wellman

There has to be some sort of karma going that the minor league manager who goes completely berserk would come from the same organization where the major league manager is chasing the all-time record for ejections. And wouldn't it figure that the record chaser, Bobby Cox would have some insight on his organizational peer and part time lunatic, Phillip Wellman. This perspective is accompanied by an anecdote we wish would show up on You Tube:
"You used to see that all time in the Minors," Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "The game has changed now. It's just changed." Cox remembers being in Syracuse one night nearly three decades ago, when a manager scaled a light pole in right field while yelling at the umpires. The comical aspect came when he was scared to climb down, forcing a local firefighter to help him make his descent.

Unlike Wellman, that manager was spared some unwanted attention because his actions came before this era in which cameras can broadcast nearly anything and everything to the world in an instant. "It happened and they've got it on video," Cox said. "Whether it's Paris Hilton or a manager going off, they've got it. So it's not overblown. It's just the way that it is nowadays."

This brings up an interesting point ... if Bobby Cox understands that there's cameras that capture every image imaginable, and if he's conscious that the next ejection is the record tying ejection, then what does he have planned? He can't let Wellman, the minor leaguer, upstage him ... can he? The record tying and breaking ejections have to be something special. Props, stunt doubles, circus animals, the works.

Most likely though, Cox will probably make his next ejection the most low key ejection ever. He'll probably call the crew chief from his car on the way to the ballpark, say something about his eyesight, get ejected on the spot, then turn the car towards the coast and head for the beach having tied the record without having to be at the ballpark to talk about it.

Braves Suspend Phillip Wellman For Three Games

Earlier today, fellow FanHouse scribe PostmanE asked whether or not the punishment fit the crime for Lou Piniella and his four-game suspension.

Well, continuing along the suspension wavelength here, Phillip Wellman, he of rosin-bag-grenade-throwing fame, received a three-game suspension from the major league version of the Braves. Now, if you're wondering why Piniella's outburst -- which was rather mild compared to Wellman's, even though he made contact with an umpire -- seems a bit disproportionate as far comparing suspensions is concerned, it's because the Braves handed down the suspension to Wellman, not baseball.

According to the AP article, even if he was suspended or fined by baseball, the public won't be informed about it.
Wellman and the club declined comment, spokesman Nicholas Skinner said.

A Southern League executive declined to talk about a likely suspension or fine.

"The league president is working on that right now," said Lori Webb, vice president of operations. "Obviously appropriate action will be taken, but nothing will be released to the public about that."
Um, Southern League executives, I think you are missing the ball here. Instead of fining or suspending Wellman, you should probably be capitalizing on this somehow. I'm thinking a reality show with Ozzie Guillen, Piniella and Bobby Cox.

It would be like "Survivor" only more hot dogs, confusion and overweight people.

(Also: After the jump, I threw up the video of Wellman's tirade. Once wasn't enough for me. I hope you feel the same way.)

Minor League Spotlight: Phillip Wellman Is a Madman

We all remember Asheville Tourists manager Joe Mikulik's famous tirade last year. Now, we have a new entry to the Mikulik Pantheon of Ridiculous Minor League Manager Protests.

The above is a link to video of Mississippi Braves manager Phillip Wellman, who was so angry about a call yesterday he did some combination of the following things:

  • Threw third base
  • Bent down to cover home plate in dirt with his hands
  • Crawled through the infield on his stomach
  • Threw the rosin bag like it was a grenade
That, my friends, is dedication to the art of protest. Somewhere, that Buddhist dude who lit himself on fire during the Vietnam War is smiling.
