God bless you, Linas Kleiza. Look what you gone and done did. The Nuggets downed the Jazz Thursday and it was Kleiza, scoring an out of nowhere 41 points with nine boards, two dimes and a steal. W.T.F., as the intertube youngsters say. Heading into the game against Utah, Kleiza was averaging his lowest total for any month of the season, scoring wise, with only 8.4 points per game (and he was not even playing 22 minutes a contest either). 41 is (obviously) a career high, and while it is spectacular that Linus thrashed the Jazz, elite numbers will not continue. A nice role player for all fantasy intents and purposes, but let's not get silly.
Hot Cakes
Kleiza was not the only one busting out for career highs though. Marcus Camby is no role player -- he would be a lock job first rounder every year if he was not always hurt -- pulled in 24 rebounds with 11 blocked shots. You can score negative points, as far as I'm concerned, at that point for my fantasy team. Shoot 0 for 12 from the floor and put one in for the other team; I don't care. 11 blocks? Re-dick-a-lus. But let's face it, Camby gets hurt. We will not call him "injury prone" because that label is silly, but it's worth noting that he gets hurt. A lot. But at this point, your opponent has started looking past that at his sickner block totals and thinking, "Maybe Marcus isn't going to get hurt this year..." and that's when you swoop on him. Snatch his underperformers, his lethargic stars and his yet-to-breakout rookies. And you plunder. Assuming, of course, you already have blocks and boards of your own.
Yes, Kwame Brown was guarding Amare Stoudamire. But that doesn't excuse posting a line, as a starting center, of eight points, six boards, seven turnovers and five personal fouls in 25 minutes. It is my humble and personal opinion that despite the starting gig, Kwame will continue to be worthless in LA for the rest of the season. I own Andrew Bynum in puh-lenty of leagues and I have usually been seeing offers of Kwame Brown to filll his spot. However, I am passing on all of them, because I want nothing to do with Kwame. I'm going to suggest the same thing to you.
