Report: Chargers Likely to Play in Dallas

The San Diego fires forced the Chargers to relocate to Arizona to practice. In the meantime, Qualcomm Stadium has been used as an evacuation center. In light of the chaos in the area, I asked whether or not the NFL should move or cancel San Diego's scheduled home game for Sunday against the Texans. It seemed like playing in Arizona would be the solution. Now, the San Diego Union-Tribune says that the game will likely be moved to Dallas if Qualcomm isn't available:
It appears likely the Chargers will end up playing in Texas Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, if they can't play at home, sources said last night. The Cowboys have a bye Sunday.

Dallas makes sense because the game would likely draw more fans than would a game in Arizona, which would ease the financial losses the Chargers will incur. Also, the Chargers would count on the fact LaDainian Tomlinson is from Waco and went to school at nearby TCU, as well as Dallas fans' acrimony for Houston, to ensure the crowd is not pro-Texans.
...
The commissioner said yesterday the Chargers and the league are also considering playing in Los Angeles, Phoenix or Houston.

Los Angeles and Sun Devil Stadium in Phoenix are in question because of logistics (neither host an NFL team anymore). Houston would be an undesirable location for the Chargers because of the clearcut advantage it would give the Texans. But in Dallas, the gates would be expected to generate good revenue and the crowd would be more neutral. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Should NFL Move or Cancel Chargers Game?

With the Chargers being forced to evacuate San Diego because of fires and relocate to Arizona to practice, the question remains, what will happen with their scheduled home game Sunday against the Texans? Currently, Qualcomm Stadium, which is where the Chargers play their home games, is being used as an evacuation center, therefore it's in doubt whether or not the facility would be available over the weekend for a game. One option would be to play the game in Glendale, Arizona, where the Cardinals play their home games (the Cardinals are off on their bye this week).

The last time this happened, the Chargers wound up playing their game in Arizona, so history might repeat itself. In football, more than any other sport, playing home games holds an advantage over road and neutral field games. Additionally, that's a lot of lost revenue for the franchise. For both those reasons, I would not want to play the game in any place other than San Diego (especially since the Chargers are fighting for a playoff spot). Word is that the game could be moved to Monday night because there's a motorcycle show scheduled for the weekend in Glendale. I'm guessing that is what will happen, and the Chargers will have to make the best of the situation. We'll keep you posted on all the developments.

New Chargers Stadium Proposed in San Diego

Not to be outdone by the Padres who are playing in the newly erected Petco Park, the Chargers are likewise seeking a new stadium. As a result, a financial group is proposing to turn Qualcomm Stadium into an all-encompassing entertainment area:
The proposal includes about 20 projects at the 166-acre Qualcomm Stadium property that would be built in phases over about 20 years. They include four hotels, office buildings with retail space, 1,500 apartments, student housing, three parking garages, a shopping center, a 16-acre park and an electronic display similar to Times Square in New York City.

The Chargers and the National Football League would pay most of the costs for the new stadium, with the city and county pitching in $50 million each in bond financing for a $600 million facility – a cost the Chargers believe is low. The city also would be expected to contribute an additional $50 million in bond financing for a $190 million arena.

The Chargers are also evaluating two locations in Chula Vista, and one in Oceanside. I think keeping a stadium in the Qualcomm area is optimal because of its central location in San Diego. But I do have to say, the Chula Vista Chargers does have a ring to it. Considering how nice the Downtown area is with the addition of Petco Park, I would be eager to see San Diego implement this proposal at Qualcomm.
