With Kevin Martin Out for a Week, Kings Short at the League's Most Bountiful Position

One thing the NBA has too many of: swingmen. The D-League is littered with shooting guards and small forwards good enough to play in the bigs, and you'll find most domestic players who end up taking a European payday fall in the swing positions. It is a bountiful position.

The Kings currently have one healthy non-rookie swingman. One. Francisco Garcia strained his calf in the preseason, and will be on the sidelines another week at least. Quincy Douby (a failed point guard, now an Eddie House-style two-guard) twisted his ankle early in camp and has only been back long enough to re-injure himself.

Most recently, Kevin Martin sprained his ankle hard in Sunday's win over Golden State, and he'll be out 7-10 days.

That leaves starting small forward John Salmons and the rawest rookie of them all, Donté Greene, as the only swing players left.

Mike Bibby Out 6-10 Weeks With Thumb Injury

Mike BibbyThe Sacramento Kings were never expected to be any good this year (sorry, TZ), so the last thing they needed was for the uphill climb to get steeper. Unfortunately, that's what happened on Friday when Mike Bibby underwent an MRI that revealed a torn ligament in his left thumb. He'll miss the next 6-10 weeks.

Of course, he was supposed to miss two weeks with a similar injury last year but ended up playing through it. Based solely on the extended timeline this year, though, I doubt that'll happen again.

What's odd is that the team doesn't even know when the injury occurred: he actually made the trip with the team to Las Vegas on Thursday but returned back to Sacramento on Friday morning for the MRI. He claims the injury happened a few days prior in practice, but apparently he didn't take it seriously until the pain lingered a few more days. If you look closely at the picture above (taken Thursday night in Las Vegas at a function for team owner Gavin Maloof), you'll notice his left hand is in fact wrapped up.

Random YouTube Magic: The Life and Times of Quincy Douby

Not every Coney Island ballplayer comes into the league with Telfair or Marbury-like god complex. Witness the Kings' Quincy Douby; in this video, the first part of a two-part mini-doc, we hear how Douby had no name for himself in NYC. We then see him wandering around the old neighborhood like he still barely has one. I also recommend part two, which takes us up through his pro present.
