OCEANPORT, N.J. (AP) -- What a gal!

Rachel Alexandra turned on the speed around the far turn and rolled past the boys once again to win the $1.25 million and establish herself as one of the greatest fillies in thoroughbred racing.

When the regal bay filly returned to the winner's circle with Calvin Borel patting her neck, the Monmouth Park crowd of 37,090 cheered mightily for racing's brightest star.

Suddenly, I'm into horse racing.

I find myself wondering how many cowboy hats Bennie "Chip" Woolley owns, and whether Mr. Ed was faster than Trigger. This all came out of nowhere, just like Mine That Bird during the Kentucky Derby.

NEW YORK -- Chip Woolley sometimes looks like he wants to dart out of a room as fast as he can. He fidgets with his welterweight-sized belt buckle, adjusts his 10-gallon black hat, scuffs his cowboy boats on the marble floor and nervously smoothes the mustache that frames his mouth like parentheses. BALTIMORE -- When it was all over and the fantastic filly Rachel Alexandra did what everyone thought she'd do and won the Preakness, a gaggle of us hemmed in rider Mike Smith of Jockeys' TV show fame, as well as horse racing Hall of Fame fame, and asked him about the winner of the Triple Crown's middle jewel. After all, no other jockey had ever seen the undefeated Miss Alexandra's rear end as close as Smith, who wound up just a length behind at the wire.
