As the NFL continues its investigation into Tom Cable's past and his incident with former Oakland assistant Randy Hanson, the situation in Oakland has become tenuous at best.
It might get messier still. Yahoo's Jason Cole, citing a source familiar with the case, reported that the Raiders plan to cooperate with the NFL's investigation of Cable because "Oakland owner Al Davis is hoping to gather enough information to fire Cable with cause at the end of the season so that Davis doesn't have to pay Cable."
Cable, who went 4-8 as Oakland's interim head coach last season, was officially named head coach in the offseason and given a two-year contract with two additional option years.
No criminal charges will be filed against Raiders head coach Tom Cable for his role in an altercation that fractured the jaw of Oakland assistant Randy Hanson, Napa, Calif., district attorney Gary Lieberstein announced Wednesday.
"We have concluded that the facts and evidence developed do not warrant criminal charges brought against Tom Cable in regards to an incident which occurred on August 5, 2009 in a hotel room at the Oakland Raiders' training camp in Napa," Lieberstein said in a press release.
Liberstein's announcement came after a more than two-month-long investigation.
It's only a matter of time before the Napa Valley Police introduce Raiders head coach Tom Cable to the back of a squad car for breaking assistant coach Randy Hanson's jaw. In preparation for that eventuality, here's a handy graph of potential Cable replacements.
Randy Hanson's previous NFL coaching experience includes stops with the Minnesota Vikings (2003-05) and St. Louis Rams (2007). He joined the Raiders' staff in 2007.
While the fight with head coach Tom Cable has garnered the most publicity, Hanson's volatile personality has caused him to veer off course with the previous Raiders' coaching regime. He has been described as a tireless worker and a player favorite by some, a snitch by others. One former Raiders employee who worked with Hanson characterized him as a coaching assistant "who thinks he knows everything, all the time."
Alienated Raiders assistant coach Randy Hanson told the Napa Valley (Calif.) Police Department that Oakland head coach Tom Cable struck him and broke his jaw during an Aug. 5 altercation, according to NFL.com's Jason La Canfora. Police have been investigating the incident, which occurred at the Raiders' training camp headquarters at the Napa Valley Marriott and sent Hanson to the hospital.
In any case, Stafford and Sanchez will start Sunday in New Orleans and Houston as the NFL season finally gets under way after what seems like an eternal offseason.
There are other QB story lines the first week (although folks often forget there are 21 other guys on the field).
Napa, Calif., police said Friday they have reopened the criminal investigation into an alleged assault by Raiders head coach Tom Cable on defensive assistant Randy Hanson on Aug. 5 at the team's training camp facilities.
This comes days after FanHouse, National Football Post and Yahoo! Sports revealed that Cable attacked Hanson in what has been described as a blindsided assault during a coaches' meeting at the Raiders' camp headquarters at the Napa Valley Marriott.
According to multiple sources, Hanson sustained a fractured jaw and other serious facial injuries in the altercation and has sought hospital treatment as recently as Wednesday evening.

NAPA, Calif. -- Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable, who is being investigated by the NFL following allegations that he fractured the jaw of defensive assistant Randy Hanson with a blind-sided punch during an Aug. 5 altercation at the team's Napa training camp, offered an emphatic explanation Tuesday of what occurred.
"Nothing happened," Cable blurted out when pressed again for details about a FanHouse report that the head coach struck Hanson with such force the defensive assistant required treatment at Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa on Aug. 6.
Napa police confirmed to FanHouse on Monday that their officers followed hospital protocol by questioning the 41-year-old Raiders assistant coach, whose name police would not release citing privacy concerns, while he was undergoing emergency treatment for a jaw injury. NFL sources said Hanson sustained a fractured jaw as a result of the punch.
Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable punched defensive assistant Randy Hanson in the jaw during an Aug. 5 altercation at the team's training camp headquarters at the Napa Valley Marriott, multiple sources told FanHouse.
National Football Post first reported Monday that Hanson, a third-year assistant who is in his first season with the team under the title "assistant coach-defense," had been hit by another member of the coaching staff, but did not specify the attacker.
Two NFL sources have confirmed to FanHouse that the assailant was Cable and "that Hanson never saw it coming."
