Five Guys to Avoid If You Want to Win Your Fantasy Football League in 2008

Welcome to Five Guys, a Fantasy FanHouse introduction on how to not play your free fantasy football league looking like Mr. Simpson above.

Tony Romo
I hated him last year and I hate him this year. I'm sorry Cowboys fans. Your bandwagon doesn't have air conditioning and I'm not getting on board. But a lot of people are -- while for the most part he's getting taken in the second round, plenty of people are watching Tom Brady and Peyton Manning go and then ... "Oh no, I just drafted Romo in the first round!!!"

Don't be that guy/gal.

Look at the egg he laid in the fantasy playoffs last year: two games, 471 passing yards, four picks, three fumbles and one passing touchdown. Wow. What a steal in the first round.

Or perhaps the fact that he was only good half the season (he stunk in October and December).

Seriously. You don't want to draft him that early. I promise.

Shockey To Saints Sends Fantasy Ripples

When Jeremy Shockey was traded to the Saints earlier this week, an already potent fantasy offense got better.

Will Brinson already covered the potential for the Saints offense in his fantasy preview, but with the acquisition of Shockey things have changed for all involved parties. Let's check the fantasy fallout of this trade, person-by-person:

Jeremy Shockey -- As Tom Mantzouranis said in the post linked above, Shockey is totally the type that will go nuts trying to prove something to the Giants -- and probably himself. He's already publicly stated as much. He thrived under Sean Payton before with a much lesser QB than Drew Brees. On Brees, he hasn't been able to find a reliable TE outlet in New Orleans -- since leaving Antonio Gates behind in San Diego. This has all the makings of a monster season for Shockey. He's an elite TE in fantasy once again, and I think it's going to be a career year. Receiver-like numbers of 1,100 yards and 10 TDs are definitely within the realm of possibility, and you can expect 75+ catches.

Urban Meyer: Tim Tebow 'Is the Greatest Player of Our Era'

Also: Florida is the greatest academic institution in America (cough). Hyperbole, anyone? Don't take my word for it, here's the Miami Herald's brief account.
Simply calling Tim Tebow the best quarterback in college football apparently isn't enough. Gators coach Urban Meyer told a Miami audience that Tebow ''is the greatest player of our era''
Red meat, certainly, for the carnivorous Gator faithful but also typical SEC boastfulness to the rest of us.

I'm not sure how Meyer defines era, but arbitrarily let's say it starts in the year 2000. Top of my head there are several players deserving of such mention -- Reggie Bush, Vince Young, Darren McFadden, Adrian Peterson, Matt Leinart, (gasp!) Michael Vick, Larry Fitzgerald and Mike Williams.

Remember all that greatest talk about USC in 2005? The lesson then, as now, is to not go down that road. Expectations for Tebow will be through the roof this year. That's part of the danger in delivering so much, so early: an encore of greater consequence is expected to feed the masses. Disappointment is almost inevitable, as is jealousy and backlash in the rabidly partisan world of college football. Best to celebrate a very good player and save the distinction-making for after he's played that last down.

Never Too Early: New Orleans Saints Fantasy Football Preview

Hear that? It's the pitter-patter of fantasy football season approaching. Fantasy FanHouse is here to get you ready by previewing every team from a fantasy perspective.

Meet the ...
The Shootouts (it sounds nicer than the "Aints"). Not that New Orleans can't be good -- they can. And they're a nice unit for fantasy football teams, because, in theory, they have a ton of offense. But theorizing is fine until you end up burning through three top 50 picks, which is what Drew Brees, Marques Colston and Reggie Bush will cost you.

The Breakout
Perhaps I'm being old fashioned, but Deuce McAllister seems to me like the best possible "breakout" option on this team. Sure, he's gone through more ACL's than Alonzo Mourning has kidneys, but the Saints can't function without a strong between the tackles runner. Oh, and he "don't cost nuthin'!" Which, to me, is the ideal scenario for finding a breakout -- cheap, easy and late.

The Bust
I thought that people had stopped sweating Bush, but judging from his ADP (30), I guess not. Seriously, he's going 30th. (30!!!) It just goes to show how much potential, upside, etc can drive someone's fantasy value. Anywho, I wouldn't draft Reginald with your pick, personally. What justifies taking him? The 3.7 YPC last year or the 3.6 the year before? Granted, the 80+ catches per year are nice, and he's a nice RB2 in PPR leagues but let someone else fall prey.

Not Everyone At USC Recognizes Pete Carroll

Something light on this fine Tuesday mid-day: USC football coach Pete Carroll walking around campus asking staff and students what they know about USC football.

Surprise! Not everyone realizes they're talking to the head coach. No wonder Reggie Bush and O.J. Mayo's alleged indiscretions flew under the radar. Regardless, time to boost those Q scores coach.

(H/T: The Wiz)

Report: O.J. Mayo Took $30,000 in Cash and Gifts in High School and at USC

ESPN is reporting that a former associate of ex-USC basketball player O.J. Mayo says Mayo violated NCAA rules by accepting $30,000 in cash and gifts from a Los Angeles event promoter before and during his one season playing for the Trojans.

The report, which first aired this morning on Outside the Lines, says the gifts Mayo received from a man named Rodney Guillory included cash, a flat-screen TV for Mayo's dorm room, cell phone service, a hotel room, clothes, meals and airline tickets for Mayo's friends and a relative.

Mayo issued the following statement:
"I am focusing on the process of making my dream come true, which is to play professional basketball. I will not allow these allegations to become a distraction to me and my family. I have been through investigations by the NCAA, the Pac Ten and USC before I attended school and during the time I have been here. I have not engaged in any wrongdoing. If these claims were true I would suspect they would have been discovered by one of these organizations."
Mayo, who is done at USC and has declared for the NBA draft, is the second high-profile USC athlete to be accused of taking improper benefits; an investigation of similar accusations involving Reggie Bush is ongoing.

Houston Texans Coach Loves Steve Slaton; Calls Reggie Bush 'Third Down Type Player'

It's not a big secret that the Texans were looking for a running back in the draft. They acquired West Virginia standout Steve Slaton in the third round as a change of pace back.

While discussing the NFL trend toward having at least one receiving-type playmaking RB, Texans offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan gave Reggie Bush a left handed compliment in the process (video above):
"I think Steve Slaton pretty much fits any offense to tell you the truth. The reason I think that is because he's a good runner, and a good enough runner can fit into any scheme. What we like most about Slaton, is I think he's got a chance to be a special-type player. You look at guys around the league like Kevin Faulk, a guy like Reggie Bush; guys who come in and fill a specific role on third downs.
...
I think when a guy is 197 pounds and if you look at the history throughout the NFL there are not too many guys that are first and second down player for long periods of time. When you look at a guy that people are projecting as a third down type guy or a change of pace guy I believe a lot of teams have more important needs that go early in the draft. One exception is Reggie Bush; he is the highest guy that I've seen go that is a third down type player. The third round is when these guys start popping out."
That's about as direct as the Texans have come to talking about why they didn't pick The! Best! Running Back! Evaaaar! that a lot of people thought was a no brainer pick in the 2006 draft.

Jake Long Will Almost Certainly Be a Dolphin, Unless, of Course, It's Vernon Gholston

Hey, it's just like 2006 but with none of the excitement. In the days leading up to that draft, we all just figured the Houston Texans would take Reggie Bush because, according to ... well, everybody, he was the best player on the planet.

Instead, the Texans, Charley Casserly, and his hair negotiated a pre-draft deal with defensive end Mario Williams, signed him the night before, and the rest of us were left to wonder who the Texans would take with their sure-to-be 2007 first-overall pick.

There's a reason fans and the media typically don't work as NFL general managers: they have no idea what they're talking about. Two years later, Williams is one of the best young defensive ends in the league and the highlight of Bush's career is that he's yet to contract a sexually transmitted disease from Kim Kardashian.

This year, the Dolphins have been reportedly negotiating with tackle Jake Long and linebacker Vernon Gholston. And so far, it's been pretty boring. Today, though, the Palm Beach Post's Tim Graham is spicing things up. Or something:

Steelers Are Interested in Randy Moss (if You Believe the Boston Herald)

So we've gone from, "Yep, I definitely want to end my career in New England," to "Yep, I definitely want to get paid; it's about straight cash, homey." Look, I don't blame Randy Moss for claiming he wanted to stay with the Patriots (hey, that's what good teammate do), or for wanting one last ginormous payday.

After last season's 23-touchdown effort, Moss deserves to be the NFL's richest wideout. That probably won't happen in New England, which is why we're now talking about potential suitors for the guy who, just 10 months ago, was thought to be done.

In today's Boston Herald, John Tomase speculates (wildly) on the five most likely destinations for Moss should he not stay in Foxboro:

1. Cowboys
2. Packers
3. Steelers
4. Giants
5. Saints

What, no Eagles? And the Cowboys and Packers are old news at this point, but still distinct possibilities in our little world of interweb make-believe. And then Tomase officially mails it in when he writes that the Steelers are in the Moss mix.

Reggie Bush Accuser Lloyd Lake Leaves Deposition Over Gun

Will the drama never cease?
Lloyd Lake walked out on Tuesday before giving a scheduled deposition in connection with the lawsuit he filed against New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush.
At issue was a person in attendance in possession of a gun, which apparently spooked Lake. Yahoo! News, which appears to be 100% in the bag for Lake, recounts what appeared to be a menacing person staring directly at him and revealing a gun during the deposition. It appears based on the ESPN story that this person was a member of Bush's private security outfit.

Lake, fearing for his safety, said no mas to the scheduled deposition after that.

From ESPN's story, Bush's side contends that Lake had made a pair of threats in December against Bush. Law enforcement and private security allegedly advised Bush to take extra precaution especially after Lake's attorney allegedly told Bush's attorney that he could not control Lake, a former alleged gang member, if Bush didn't pay up. Got all that?

Basically, welcome to civil court hell, but with guns and intimidation. Don't ever get divorced, kids. Or allegedly leave a business partner in the lurch for large sums of cash.
