Report: Matt Jones Avoids Suspension

Matt JonesThe stagnant and seemingly dried-up free-agent wide receiver market looks like it will receive a jolt. According to a published report, Matt Jones, formerly of the Jacksonville Jaguars, will avoid league suspension for violating terms of a court-ordered drug program.

The NFL did suspend Jones for the final three games of 2008 after he was charged with cocaine possession. Jones then violated his subsequent probation by drinking alcohol, landing him in jail for five days. Now, more than two months later and after Jacksonville released Jones, he apparently is at liberty to resume his playing career.

Reggie Williams Pleads Guilty to Cocaine Possession Charge

Reggie WilliamsBack in April, former Jacksonville wide receiver Reggie Williams was tasered and arrested in Houston, then charged with felony drug possession after police found cocaine in his pocket.

On Monday, Williams entered a guilty plea on those charges and was sentenced to 2 years probation, a $200 fine and 120 hours of community service, according to KHOU in Texas.

Torry Holt's Finger Is Scary

I can't help that I love Torry Holt -- he's a North Carolina State guy who has dominated as a wide receiver at every level. Additionally, he's one of the nicest guys in the NFL, and generally deviates from the typical showboating style that one sees in so many of the league's wideouts. But that doesn't mean Holt's finger -- which is bent in all sorts of silly ways -- is any less disgusting. Because, well, as shown in the video below, it's just gross. But the finger is also a good reminder of why he's so successful; I would bet that Matt Jones or Reggie Williams might just try and smoke off such an injury or something. Holt, meanwhile, just keeps on playing. (Jacksonville.com via Frumpzilla Via Hot Clicks)

Biggest NFL Busts by Team: Who's Your Team's Worst Draft Pick Ever?

Everyone makes mistakes. But when those mistakes are magnified by intense scrutiny of the NFL draft, well, they become much more embarrassing than, say, my typical Friday morning, mustard-stain-on-khakis incident.

Which is why the NFL FanHouse braintrust got together to determine who is the biggest bust for each NFL team. They're not listed in terms of stupidity -- they're all stupid relative to a team's total draft performance. Meaning, of course, some teams "bust" is much different than another organization's; we did it this way to avoid just linking you to DetroitLions.com.

Instead, we're putting it in current draft order, sans trades, and allowing this list to serve as a reminder of each's team's ability to properly execute a fail. The "bust factor" was based primarily on three things: statistical production (or lack thereof), position in the draft and other available options during that year's draft.

Jimmy Smith Arrested on Multiple Drug Charges at Jacksonville Gas Station

Jimmy Smith was arrested this afternoon at a gas station in Jacksonville, Florida, and according to a TMZ report, has been booked into a nearby detention center on four different drug charges: two felonies and two misdemeanors, in addition to driving with a suspended license.

Smith was allegedly carrying multiple illegal substances, was photographed in handcuffs at the gas station while officers escorted him to and from the bathroom and is reportedly being held on $5006 bond in downtown Jacksonville.

The Perfect Draft: Jacksonville Jaguars

With the draft approaching, we ignore projections and identify the dream scenario for each team in a series we call The Perfect Draft.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are on the brink ... of something. Last year we thought it was a Super Bowl run. This year it could be collapse. Or maybe mediocrity. That's the beauty of parity, injuries and scheduling in the NFL -- a full-blown title contender can go to also-ran and then back to title contender quicker than Blake and Antoine can execute a patented two snaps and a twist.

The Jaguars hope that the 2009 NFL Draft will help them execute that second 180-degree turn, but in order to do that, they'll need it to be ... perfect. (Sorry, I've been watching way too much CSI: Miami lately.)

Report: Reggie Williams Tasered, Arrested for Felony Drug Charges

Reggie Williams and Matt Jones already had one major commonality: they are each first-round wide receiver busts for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Now, reportedly, they have another: both have been arrested for cocaine possession.

According to a recent report from Fox Sports' Alex Marvez, Williams was arrested Sunday night in Houston on felony charges of cocaine possession and was tasered by two off-duty police officers who were providing security at the Open City Bar and Lounge.

Matt Jones Released by Jags

Matt Jones has had his share of trouble over the past year or so. He was busted for possession of cocaine and then not-so-promptly suspended for the rest of the season by the NFL.

Things got worse when Jones violated his plea agreement by getting drunk and was jailed for seven days. Jones was eventually released from prison but, unfortunately for him, he was "released" again today, only this time by the Jags.

Your Move, Jags: Jones Is Out of Jail

Things are looking up for former Jaguars first-round draft picks. First, a judge dismisses DWI and marijuana possession charges against Reggie Williams, and now Matt Jones is a free man, serving just seven days of an eight-day jail sentence. (And, yes, I realize that while Williams is free to go about his business without further legal entanglements, he's currently unemployed. Hey, it could be worse.)

Jones was arrested and canned last week for violating a plea agreement on a cocaine possession charge stemming from last summer. The crime that landed him in the clink: drinking beer. Out of context, jailing somebody for chugging a few pops while playing golf is a ludicrous notion, but two things worth mentioning: first, Jones was already on probation on drug charges, and second, if this had been, say, Pacman Jones, the media (FanHouse included) would beat us about the head with the news for the foreseeable future.

Jags Find Left Tackle, Sign Tra Thomas

The Jaguars opted to let 2005 second-rounder Khalif Barnes test free agency, which meant that they had a gaping hole at left tackle heading into the offseason. (At least in the sense that with Barnes no longer on the team, there physically isn't anyone manning the position; that said, at times last season, Barnes played like he wasn't on the field.)

On Monday, they found their stopgap, if only temporarily: the club signed Tra Thomas, 35, who spent the first 11 years of his career with the Eagles.
