Boxing Claims Big Pay-Per-View Victory Over UFC 103

Days after the Floyd Mayweather Jr-Juan Manuel Marquez fight went head-to-head with UFC 103 on pay-per-view, Golden Boy Promotions is declaring that boxing scored a knockout victory over MMA, with four or five times as many buys as the UFC.

It's important to note that Mayweather-Marquez was the biggest boxing match of 2009, while UFC 103 wasn't close to the biggest MMA card of the year. And it's also important to note that pay-per-view buy rates are difficult to nail down.

But Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer said that when all the numbers come in, he'll have an impressive buy rate to announce, likely over 1 million.

Floyd Mayweather, Golden Boy 'Not Worried' About UFC 103 Competition

The Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Juan Manuel Marquez fight will be the first high-profile boxing match to go up against a major UFC pay-per-view on the same night in quite some time. How many pay-per-view buys both shows generate will tell an interesting story as to which sport controls the interest of the general mainstream sports public.

But if you think Mayweather or Golden Boy Promotions is concerned about competing for eye balls with the red-hot UFC on September 19, think again.

After a 19-month hiatus, Floyd "Money" Mayweather, one of the greatest boxers in American history, is getting back in the ring to face Mexico's No. 1 boxer, Juan Manuel Marquez. In this video we hear from Mayweather, who is known for his flashiness, as we ask him what he has to say to his fans, and find out where he gets his swagger from. We also hear from Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer on why Marquez is better than Manny Pacquiao and worthy of facing "Money" Mayweather.

Does Golden Boy Promotions Have Big Plans for Affliction, MMA?

When Affliction announced its partnership with Golden Boy Promotions, it was seen as a big deal for mixed martial arts that the top boxing promoter was getting involved in MMA.

But does Golden Boy really have big plans for MMA? After Golden Boy boss Oscar De La Hoya announced his retirement from boxing, I asked him about his goals as a promoter, and I was interested in what he didn't say.

Video: Fedor Emelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski Is a Great Fight, but Will It Happen?

First, here's the hype video for Fedor Emelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski at Affliction Day of Reckoning:

Make no mistake, Fedor vs. Arlovski is a great fight. The winner of that fight is the best heavyweight in MMA, no matter what happens in the UFC with Brock Lesnar, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Frank Mir.

But there's just one problem: A lot of people don't think the fight is going to happen at all.

Golden Boy Promotions: De La Hoya-Pacquiao Is Bigger Than De La Hoya-Mayweather

In terms of pay-per-view buys, the biggest fight in history was last year's clash between Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather.

But De La Hoya's promotion company, Golden Boy Promotions, thinks it's got a bigger fight on its hands when Manny Pacquaio fights De La Hoya on December 6.

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer told me today that he thinks the legions of Filipino fans who support Pacquaio make this fight a huge global event.

"The magnitude of this event is substantially bigger than De La Hoya-Mayweather," Schaefer said. "Mayweather doesn't have the kind of fan support that Manny Pacquiao brings to the table."

I don't think De La Hoya-Pacquaio is going to do as many pay-per-view buys as De La Hoya-Mayweather did, but I do think it's going to be the biggest pay-per-view event of the year by a large margin, and an event that will have the kind of global appeal that few sporting events can match.
