Patriots Super Bowl Ring Auctioned on eBay, Received No Bids

Super Bowl XXXVI RingI'm one of the 10 people in the world that has yet to make a purchase on eBay, mainly because I have no use for a potato chip that looks like Jesus (that's what people sell on eBay, right?). However, if I had an extra $50,000 burning a hole in pocket, I probably would have jumped at the chance to own a piece of NFL history, as a member of the Super Bowl XXXVI champion New England Patriots recently auctioned his ring on eBay. It received no bids.

According to USA Today's NFL blog, The Huddle, the ring belonged to a player who was on all three Super Bowl-winning Patriots teams.

Chiefs Continue Rebuilding Process

Who moved to the head of the NFL class during the draft? Find out with FanHouse's team-by-team 2009 Draft Grades.

Compared to last April, the 2009 Chiefs draft was unremarkable. A year ago, the team landed five players who contributed immediately, and a handful of others will get opportunities this season.

But unlike 2008, Kansas City finally has a franchise quarterback. New general manager Scott Pioli sent a second-round pick to New England for Matt Cassel (and linebacker Mike Vrabel). Cassel, who went nine years between starts, led the Patriots to an 11-5 record last season and parlayed that into a handsome payday (eventually) and a starting gig.

Report: Patriots Could Move Into Top 10 to Take Tyson Jackson

I
In the days following the 2001 draft, when a still unproven Bill Belichick drafted defensive tackle Richard Seymour with the sixth overall pick, then-Boston Globe columnist Ron Borges writing for MSNBC.com cemented his place in Boston sports history by writing these words:

Julius Peppers Wants Haynesworth Cash

Earlier this week, NFL Network's Adam Schefter put the chances of the Patriots landing Julius Peppers anytime in the near future at roughly 0.1 percent. Yesterday, in an interview with Boston radio station WEEI, New England head coach Bill Belichick, spoke in laudatory generalities about Peppers, which, ultimately, could mean nothing more than he really likes the Carolina defensive end.

Richard Seymour's Wife Arrested on Two Alleged Counts of 'Lynching'

Richard Seymour's wife was arrested yesterday in a bizarre -- and violent -- set of criminal circumstances. Tanya Seymour, according to wltx.com, was picked up by police because of an incident relating to a New Year's Eve party that resulted in her being charged with "two counts of second degree lynching."

Patriots Facing Salary Cap Problems if They Franchise Matt Cassel

The New England Patriots have been in the news quite a bit the past week, and their quarterback situation for 2009 seems to be the primary reason. First, there was the report from Mike Lombardi that it was, pretty much, a slam dunk that New England would place the franchise tag on free-agent-to-be quarterback Matt Cassel. Then, on Tuesday, Wilson passed along the report from the Dan Patrick show that Tom Brady's knee is still a major league mess, and that we could see a two-headed monster of Tom Terrific and Cassel next season for New England.

So, naturally, Tom Curran of NBC Sports passes along today's news that the Patriots have not yet made up their minds with Cassel, possibly because franchising him could destroy their salary cap in 2009.

From Curran:
A source who'll be directly involved in the call on the Patriots ascendant quarterback said in an email that the report was "speculation," adding "needless to say, no decision has been made."

Every Play Counts: Miami Dolphins' Jake Long an OK Left Tackle, Great Right Tackle

Every Play Counts is Michael David Smith's weekly look at one specific player or one aspect of a team on every single play of the previous game.

Everyone already knows that Miami running back Ronnie Brown ran for four touchdowns and threw for another as the Dolphins dominated the New England Patriots. But not enough attention has been paid to the role that rookie offensive tackle Jake Long played as the Dolphins' offense suddenly and shockingly came to life on Sunday.

Specifically, there were 10 plays on which the Dolphins moved Long from his usual position on the left side and instead had him play on the right side in an unbalanced line, and an examination of Long on every play of the game shows that while he's just OK at protecting quarterback Chad Pennington on pass plays, which is his primary responsibility when he's playing left tackle, he's dominant as a run blocker, which is his main job when he's a right tackle.

FanHouse NFL Season Preview: New England Patriots - Flirting With Perfection Again?

Training camps are underway, the NFL season is right around the corner, and to get you ready for 2008, FanHouse previews all 32 teams, "heat index" style. We'll rate each club in 10 categories on a scale of 1 to 10, high score wins.

Quarterback: All Tom Brady, all the time. Honestly, he's got it all: a rocket for an arm, Madison Avenue good looks, dreamy eyes (that's what the ladies say, anyway), a few Super Bowl rings, Hall of Fame career, lingerie model girlfriend. He's living the American dream, and as he goes, the Patriots go. Unfortunately for New England, he hasn't played a snap this preseason, and as a result, the Patriots' offense has gone from a battleship that bombed opposing defenses into submission, to a rowboat missing an oar, aimlessly spinning in circles. A healthy Brady is the key to the season, because if the two Matt's (Cassell and Gutierrez) can't get it done in fake games, what's going to happen if they face defenses that have actually game planned and are trying to stop them? Brady will play on one leg, if he has to. Heat Index: 9

Richard Seymour, Benjamin Watson Are Big Israel Football League Fans

This is cool: Patriots owner Bob Kraft took defensive end Richard Seymour and tight end Benjamin Watson to Israel. Every year, Kraft brings players with him when he visits Israel with the Combined Jewish Philanthropists of the greater Boston area, but this time is different: 2007-08 marks the "premiere season of tackle football in Israel."

Kraft, Seymour and Watson attended the last game of the regular season in the Israel Football League.
Big Blue Jerusalem Lions ran out as easy winners over Mike's Place Tel Aviv Sabres squad for a 38-0 shutout victory, heading into the first round of the first-year league's playoffs next week.

Speaking in Hebrew and English before the teams took the field for the regular season finale match-up, Kraft welcomed Seymour and Watson to the Holy Land, and expressed his happiness at "watching American football in Israel, the best sport in the world."
The Jerusalem Post reports that both players offered pre-game pep talks to the teams, with Watson consulting the Big Book of Cliches before going all Knute Rockne on the Sabres: "Play as hard as you can, and put in a great effort," Watson encouraged the Sabres prior to kick-off. "Whatever happened last time doesn't matter. It's just about how well you play tonight."

Imagine what the score would've been without Watson's insights. Next year, instead of pep talks, how about Kraft bring Rodney Harrison with him and let him do his talking on the field. Then we'll see just good the Big Blue Jerusalem Lions are. The IFL doesn't drug test, does it?

Asante Samuel Would Like to Return to New England, but 'It's Gonna Take a Lot'

Good news: Asante Samuel wants to stay in New England. Bad news: the Pro Bowl cornerback told the Boston Globe that "it's gonna take a lot to make me and my family happy."

There's no disputing that Samuel is a top-5 NFL cornerback and will be one of the most sought after players in free agency. And with Nate Clements hauling in an eight-year, $80 million contract from the 49ers last off-season, there's no reason to think Samuel won't be looking for a similar payday.
"The [New England] fans love me and I love them back," he said. "The organization loves me and, hopefully, we can work it out." ... Asked how much he thinks he's worth, Samuel threw the question back at his interviewer: "You take a guess and see if you can hit it. It's no secret I'm looking for a big, huge, blockbuster deal."
The Patriots aren't averse to doling out huge deals (just ask Richard Seymour) but they're also not afraid to cut bait before making a long-term commitment to a player many around the league might think is worth it (just ask Ty Law).

On a scale of 1 to 10, Samuel rates his chances of returning to New England a 10, but if that falls through, there will be plenty of suitors lined up to pay him gobs of dough. Cornerback is one position where you can never have enough depth.
