Giants Sign FB Madison Hedgecock; Good News on Brandon Jacobs

It looks like the Reuben Droughns at fullback experiment is over in New York after only one week. According to Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger, the Giants have been awarded fullback Madison Hedgecock off of waivers from the St. Louis Rams.

In order to make room for the 6-3, 266 pound back, the Giants have released Robert Douglas.

In addition to that announcement, the Giants also received good news on running back Brandon Jacobs today. Although a doctor didn't come right out and say it, Jacobs claimed that his knee is feeling better and he'll be back much sooner than expected.

"It sure won't be five weeks," Jacobs said.
Apparently, he was walking around without a limp and appeared to be in good spirits. Which, obviously, is excellent news for the Giants and their fans.

Okay, It's Gotta Be a Rule: Wear a Giants Jersey, Go Down With Injury

The most frustrating part of being a Giants fan over the last three years has been the overwhelming amount of injuries. Not once in those three years have the Giants managed to play through a season without a significant injury. In fact, they'd consider it a good year if they only suffered a single significant injury.

Unfortunately, with a little over a week to go until the regular season begins, the Giants are once again facing those injury demons. It began early in the offseason when fullback Jim Finn was placed on injured reserve with a torn labrum and was promptly followed by cornerback Michael Stone going down with a hip injury.

Over the course of the next few weeks, the Giants lost tight end Darcy Johnson (knee), wide receiver Michael Jennings (Achilles), defensive tackle Marcus Bell (knee) and defensive end Dek Bake (back).

Giants Training Camp Notebook: Kevin Dockery Impresses; Who Will Return Punts?

Giants Training Camp Notebook is a cliff notes style post aimed at giving Giants fans up-to-date news about the most recent training camp practices.

- Many people thought cornerback Kevin Dockery was going to "break out" last year, but unfortunately that never happened. However, with the new season comes a new opportunity and so far Dockery is making the most of it. He had another good practice yesterday and his constant motor is earning him a ton of respect in the locker room.

- The Giants have a huge dilemma on their hands that doesn't involve injuries. Its punt returns and who is going to field them. They tried a variety of people yesterday including Michael Jennings, Ahmad Bradshaw, R.W. McQuarters and Sinorice Moss. Rookie Aaron Ross is also a consideration.

- Brandon Jacobs leads as intensely as he plays. Yesterday during sprints, he happened to notice that fullback Robert Douglas was merely jogging and it was on from there. Jacobs lit into Douglas and you can bet that he'll never jog during sprints again.

Giants Could Use Droughns as a Fullback

Now that the Giants starting fullback, Jim Finn, is out for the year with a shoulder injury, they find themselves frantically searching for a solution. One option could be first-year fullback Robert Douglas, who happens to be the only fullback left on the Giants roster. A second and more complicated option could be Reuben Droughns.

The position isn't exactly foreign to Droughns, who saw time as a fullback in Denver, but it's not something he's very open to doing again.

"It's a career-ending position," Droughns says.
Considering the Giants plan to use Droughns often, I think it may be far too risky for them to even consider. He wasn't brought in to be an emergency guy, he was brought in to split time with Brandon Jacobs and I'm pretty sure that's exactly what he'll do. Then again, I'm just a blogger and their coaching staff may see it differently.

On the plus side, I can see how Droughns could be used effectively as a fullback; especially leading the way for Jacobs. He's built like a fullback and has impressive strength, but I would still prefer they look elsewhere for a solution to this problem.

Starting Early: Giants' Jim Finn Placed on Season-Ending Injured Reserve

As I feared, the Giants Jim Finn is finished for the season.

New York placed their starting fullback on the season-ending injured reserve list earlier today; only two days after having "successful" surgery to repair a shoulder tear.

With Finn now out for the year, the Giants have precious few options at fullback. In fact, only one currently resides on their roster: Robert Douglas.

This obviously leaves the Giants in a bit of a bind. Do they go out and get another fullback? Do they eliminate the position all together? Or do they just deal with what they have and possibly use both Brandon Jacobs and Reuben Droughns as a fullback in different situations?

There are plenty of questions that need answering before next months training camp begins. I guess we'll all just have to wait and see how this works out.
