Boeheim's 800th Deserves a 'Wow'

In his 34 years as Syracuse's head coach -- even during the years when his face was one of those synonymous with Big East basketball, not even when he won a long-awaited national championship -- never was Jim Boeheim the type to dwell for long on his own accomplishments. On Monday night, when he earned his 800th career victory over Albany at the Carrier Dome, he was quoted in the Syracuse Post Standard this way: "I guess there's a 'wow' factor, winning 800. But then, it's not like playing golf with Tiger Woods. I mean, that's a real 'wow' factor.''

Boeheim playing down his feat was as expected as was his reference to his other favorite sport. But is it really possible to look at 800 victories, all at one school, with that school being his alma mater, and not greet it with at least a 'wow'?

If the fact that only seven other coaches with at least 10 years in Division I have done it doesn't elicit that reaction, then consider some of the legends who either have not gotten there yet, or never got there at all.

Bad Boys Return to Honor Chuck Daly

Chuck Daly's funeralTEQUESTA, Fla. -- This looked like a Bad Boys reunion.

The NBA came from around the country Wednesday to celebrate the life and mourn the death of Chuck Daly, but nothing was more impressive than his collection of pallbearers.

It was the nucleus of his two championship teams in Detroit, the ones that transformed him from just another coaching lifer into a Hall of Famer and Olympic Gold Medalist revered by all.

Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Vinnie Johnson, Rick Mahorn and Bill Laimbeer were at his side. The Bad Boy Pistons and their leader one final time.

"I think when you go through the things we did together, there is a bond that never breaks,'' said Laimbeer. "This was a sad time, but a time to celebrate who he was, and what he did, and how loved he was.''

Reynolds Dashes to Detroit

Scottie Reynolds has hit a lot of shots for Villanova, but never, ever, ever one quite like this.

Ladies and gentlemen, we may have just witnessed the last Big East game of the 2008-09 season. If Louisville wins Sunday and Villanova wins again next Saturday, we get two more, but there's no guarantee. It's possible that this down-to-the-last-half-second classic, in which Villanova beat top-seeded Pitt to reach the Final Four, was the last game of the year between Big East teams.

And if it was ... dear god, what a finale.

PHILADELPHIA (March 21) -- Rollie Massimino sat on the edge of his seat, rooting on his former team from behind the bench.

No need to sweat this one out, Coach. The Wildcats had it all the way.
