Franchitti Makes Triumphant Return, Captures IndyCar Title Again

Dario FranchittiHOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) -- Dario Franchitti's return to IndyCar racing couldn't have gone better. He's the IRL champion once again.

Franchitti successfully emerged from one of the closest points races in series history Saturday, winning the season-ending Indy 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in the first caution-free IRL race ever.

The 2007 champion -- who skipped 2008 to explore NASCAR -- held off Target Chip Ganassi teammate Scott Dixon and Penske Racing's Ryan Briscoe.

So on the 10th day of the 10th month of the year, Franchitti's No. 10 car reigned supreme over the IRL.

"I can't believe it," Franchitti said. "It all worked out."

Time to Give IndyCar Racing Its Due

IndyCar Series
HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Ryan Briscoe moves about his adopted hometown of Mooresville, N.C., untouched by the fame and glory you'd expect to accompany a young, dynamic race car driver in the midst of an exciting three-man title fight for a major sports championship.

"No one knows me there,'' the Australian demurred with a smile Thursday, minutes after posing next to the IndyCar Series trophy he's trying to earn in Saturday night's Indy 300 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

"That's not true,'' his fiancee reminded him, "Remember the girl at Starbucks?"

Chat Live With IndyCar's Ryan Briscoe

Ryan BriscoeIndyCar Series championship contender Ryan Briscoe will join FanHouse for a live chat on Thursday at 11:30 AM ET.

Briscoe, 28, who drives the No. 6 car for Team Penske, is one of three drivers who will decide the IndyCar championship Saturday night in the series finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Only eight points separate third place Briscoe from leader Scott Dixon. Dario Franchitti is five points behind Dixon in the series' second closest three-man battle for the season title.

Join Briscoe as he takes your questions and discusses the biggest opportunity of his career in one of racing's most exciting championship scenarios.

Briscoe Edges Dixon to Widen Lead

Ryan BriscoeJOLIET, Ill. (AP) -- Ryan Briscoe grabbed the IndyCar series points lead by stringing together quietly consistent finishes. Then he took control by putting on a remarkable wheel-to-wheel show under the lights at Chicagoland Speedway on Saturday night.

Briscoe made an aggressive move for the lead going into the final lap of the race, pulling alongside fellow title contender Scott Dixon as the white flag flew. After going side-by-side with their wheels inches apart, Briscoe nosed ahead at the finish line to win by 0.0077 seconds.

Told that his margin of victory -- the fourth-closest finish in series history -- translated to about 28 1/2 inches on the track, Briscoe didn't balk.

"Nice," Briscoe said. "That's enough."

'Push to Pass' Thrills IndyCar in Kentucky

IndyCar Kentucky Speedway Ryan Briscoe Ed Carpenter Penske Racing Vision Racing Tony George IRLPenske Racing's Ryan Briscoe needed every inch of the Kentucky Speedway top groove Saturday night to pull out a win over winless Ed Carpenter in the Meijer Indy 300, though that's not what people will remember.

The biggest story won't be Briscoe's triumphant return to victory lane in 2009 or how narrowly close the Tony George-owned Vision Racing team with Carpenter came to winning his first career race in some 94 tries.

Instead, the racing that the IRL IndyCar Series had become known for seemed to return with a bang in the hills of Sparta, Ky., thanks to a few rule changes for the series.

Dario Franchitti Wins Iowa Corn Indy 250

Dario Franchitti is the winner of the Iowa 250 IndyCar race.
NEWTON, Iowa (AP) -- Dario Franchitti has won the Iowa Corn Indy 250 to earn his second victory in two trips to Iowa Speedway.

Franchitti took the lead with 50 laps to go on Sunday and beat Ryan Briscoe by just over five seconds to take his first checkered flag since the Streets of Long Beach in April.

Castroneves Beats Teammate at Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- Helio Castroneves keeps smiling-and climbing.

Castroneves, who last month won the Indianapolis 500 for the third time after being acquitted of federal tax evasion charges, became a three-time winner at Texas Motor Speedway when he beat Penske teammate Ryan Briscoe off pit row after the final stop and stayed in front Saturday night.

Indianapolis 500 Race Preview

Indy 500

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has kicked off its 100th birthday celebration with the closest Indy 500 starting field in history, the largest crowd in recent memory and a vibe reminiscent of the race's heyday.

Even NASCAR's "King" Richard Petty will be trackside today as Jim Nabors sings "Back Home Again in Indiana" -- to wrap up a traditional pre-race show unlike anything in sports.

Sure, the Penske and Ganassi and Andretti Green teams are odds-on favorites to win today's Indianapolis 500. But with the reunification of the two open-wheel series last year, the grid boasts a legitimate 13-14 contenders and has finally put to rest the notion that Indy has lost its competitive edge.

Last-Minute Dramatics Put Andretti, Hunter-Reay in Indy 500

John AndrettiRyan Hunter-Reay wasn't fast enough to earn a spot in next Sunday's Indianapolis 500 as he exited Turn 4 on his final lap of qualifying Sunday at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

But somehow, someway, the 28-year-old Floridian conjured up just enough speed in the final few seconds -- the final hundred yards -- to make the field by three hundredths of a second (.03) bumping out Canadian Alex Tagliani, who was sitting in his car, next in line to qualify, as the traditional gun shot sounded ending qualifications.

Opener Proves IndyCar Worth Watching

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Ryan Briscoe stood triumphantly atop the winner's podium at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg clad in the iconic Penske Racing red-black-and-white celebrating the team's record 139th win on Sunday.

On either side of him were drivers whose second- and third-place finishes were the best in their team's history.

Briscoe's driver suit had as many sponsorship patches on one arm as runner-up Ryan Hunter-Reay and third-place Justin Wilson had on their entire uniforms -- combined.
