Huh. Maybe
Sergio Garcia decided to win his first major this week to spite
Nick Faldo. You see, Faldo, a six-time major champion (including three Open titles) had some
not-so-nice things to say about the European players, players, by the way, he'll be coachin' up at next year's Ryder Cup:
"We had to win to create what everyone now refers to as a brand," Faldo said. "Now these guys have a brand within a year. They can be millionaires in six months. We had to win to have a future. Now you just have to get out there and be a very good golfer. We had to win to have a pension fund and now you get a contribution towards a pension fund simply by making half-way cuts."
Faldo also made some weird remarks about today's players hanging out together, which somehow affects their chances of winning tournaments.
Frankly, I don't know if this is such a big deal. I mean, Faldo has a knack for making seemingly ridiculous comments -- 1999 European Ryder Cup captain Mark James accused Faldo of
trying to undermine him after not making the team.
It's worth mentioning that Faldo was a loner -- and not all that popular -- during his playing days. It's one thing to be the world's best player and keep to yourself. It's entirely something different to miss cuts on a weekly basis while still maintaining a standoffish attitude. Plus -- and more importantly -- the Europeans have made a habit of disposing of the American's rather handily in the last two Ryder Cups.
Maybe Faldo's just trying to motivate the troops, though that wouldn't make much sense given that they don't look to need much motivation. I'm guessing Faldo's just being Faldo. You know, like Manny, but better coiffed.
