Franchitti Makes Triumphant Return, Captures IndyCar Title Again

Dario FranchittiHOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) -- Dario Franchitti's return to IndyCar racing couldn't have gone better. He's the IRL champion once again.

Franchitti successfully emerged from one of the closest points races in series history Saturday, winning the season-ending Indy 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in the first caution-free IRL race ever.

The 2007 champion -- who skipped 2008 to explore NASCAR -- held off Target Chip Ganassi teammate Scott Dixon and Penske Racing's Ryan Briscoe.

So on the 10th day of the 10th month of the year, Franchitti's No. 10 car reigned supreme over the IRL.

"I can't believe it," Franchitti said. "It all worked out."

Time to Give IndyCar Racing Its Due

IndyCar Series
HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Ryan Briscoe moves about his adopted hometown of Mooresville, N.C., untouched by the fame and glory you'd expect to accompany a young, dynamic race car driver in the midst of an exciting three-man title fight for a major sports championship.

"No one knows me there,'' the Australian demurred with a smile Thursday, minutes after posing next to the IndyCar Series trophy he's trying to earn in Saturday night's Indy 300 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

"That's not true,'' his fiancee reminded him, "Remember the girl at Starbucks?"

Briscoe Edges Dixon to Widen Lead

Ryan BriscoeJOLIET, Ill. (AP) -- Ryan Briscoe grabbed the IndyCar series points lead by stringing together quietly consistent finishes. Then he took control by putting on a remarkable wheel-to-wheel show under the lights at Chicagoland Speedway on Saturday night.

Briscoe made an aggressive move for the lead going into the final lap of the race, pulling alongside fellow title contender Scott Dixon as the white flag flew. After going side-by-side with their wheels inches apart, Briscoe nosed ahead at the finish line to win by 0.0077 seconds.

Told that his margin of victory -- the fourth-closest finish in series history -- translated to about 28 1/2 inches on the track, Briscoe didn't balk.

"Nice," Briscoe said. "That's enough."

Scott Dixon Rolls to Record-Breaking 20th IndyCar Victory

Scott DixonLEXINGTON, Ohio (AP) -- Scott Dixon doesn't have the star quality of Helio Castroneves, the Scottish brogue of teammate Dario Franchitti or the All-American stature of Sam Hornish Jr.

What the affable New Zealander does have, however, is the IndyCar Series record for career wins.

Not that he's counting, not even after his dominant victory at Mid-Ohio on Sunday gave him 20 victories in the open-wheel series, breaking a tie with Hornish.

At the rate the drivers around him are winning, Dixon knows his name might not be in the record books for long.

Drivers Apologize for 'Awful' IndyCar Race

Dario FranchittiRICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Scott Dixon described the IndyCar Series race at Richmond International Raceway as "a bit of a procession, unfortunately,'' and said the 300-lap event was frustrating because the lack of passing made it more closely resemble a parade.

And he made those comments Saturday night after ending up in Victory Lane.

Teammate and runner-up Dario Franchitti apologized to fans for an "awful, awful race,'' while Graham Rahal said he only passed two cars all night while finishing third.

Castroneves Beats Teammate at Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- Helio Castroneves keeps smiling-and climbing.

Castroneves, who last month won the Indianapolis 500 for the third time after being acquitted of federal tax evasion charges, became a three-time winner at Texas Motor Speedway when he beat Penske teammate Ryan Briscoe off pit row after the final stop and stayed in front Saturday night.

Scott Dixon Chat Wrap

Defending Indianapolis 500 winner and reigning Indy Racing League champion Scott Dixon took time to chat with FanHouse readers trackside from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The 28-year-old New Zealander dominated the series last year with six poles and six wins en route to his second championship for Target Chip Ganassi Racing. He'll start Sunday's Indy 500 from the second row.

You can read what Dixon had to say after the jump.

Dario Franchitti Back on Track

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- It says it right there on the side of Dario Franchitti's car, on the back of his driver's suit. And in the smile on his face.

"It's good to be home'' is actually the slogan for Air Wick air fresheners, which is sponsoring Franchitti's car this weekend in the IndyCar Series season-opening Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. But it works on a number of levels.

IRL Days of Thunder at Texas Motor Speedway

Unlike Saturday's NASCAR Busch Series race, the IRL race at Texas Motor Speedway was nothing to snooze at.

The Bombardier Learjet 550 was complete with on track drama, "the big one," the first win of the season for the reigning champion and a career-high finish for the series' star female driver.

I'll admit I tuned in to see the follow up on the Danica Patrick and Dan Wheldon incident that occurred last week in Milwaukee which had the feisty female wanting to duke it out with her competitor following an on-track incident. Boringly, that story seems to have ended with Texas Motor Speedway president Eddie Gossage adding another piece of memorabilia to his office: boxing gloves signed by both drivers.

Things ended up getting exciting anyway, though, on lap 87 when Marco Andretti chopped Tomas Scheckter and sent him sailing across the infield. A very angry Scheckter stormed the track and threw his gloves at Andretti (video link when I find it). And here I thought that kind of stuff only happened in NASCAR.

On lap 197, Scheckter's Vision Racing teammate Anthony Foyt IV lost a tire and caused a multi-car pileup, which took out
Wheldon and his Target Chip Ganassi teammate Scott Dixon, who had previously battled for the lead, as well as Helio Castroneves, Darren Manning, Ed Carpenter and Sarah Fisher.

Watch Tony Kanaan glide through the slowing cars and flying parts unscathed:

"I'm not going to brag about it," Kanaan said. "I have no idea how I made it through. It was like 'Days of Thunder.' I kind of closed my eyes and went full throttle and made it through. Sometimes you've got to be lucky."
At the end of the day, Sam Hornish Jr. brought home the win for Penske and Andretti Green Racing finished 2-3-4 with Kanaan, Patrick (career high) and 2007 Indy 500 winder Dario Franchitti.

I was already planning to watch IRL's debut in my home state at Iowa Speedway later this month. Now I'm thinking I might have to consider a trip home to attend the Iowa Corn Indy 250 in person.
