Categorically Speaking: Some Last-Minute Stolen Base Ideas

Scott PodsednikCategorically Speaking is designed specifically for Rotisserie GMs. The information is great for all fantasy baseball formats, but for those of you who could use some help bolstering a specific roto category, this is for you. We're going to pay close attention to players who might be readily available on your waiver wire or who you might target in non-blockbuster trade talks.

It's not too late to make that final push in your fantasy baseball league. Especially in a counting stats category like stolen bases. If a few extra stolen bases would help move you up a slot or two in the standings, by all means grab someone from the waiver wire.

Here are three guys that could help.

Fantasy Fill-Ins: Monday

Melky CabreraFor a number of major league teams Mondays and Thursdays are travel days. Every Wednesday and Sunday, Fantasy Fill-Ins finds guys who should be widely available on the waiver wire and can step in for the day, helping you gain ground or hold off the pack.

On Monday we have 12 major league games on the docket but on 22 teams are playing because Tampa Bay and New York play in a double header. That means there are plenty of players to choose from on the waiver wire. If you have players in your fantasy baseball lineup from Baltimore, Detroit, Seattle, Oakland, Florida, Atlanta, Washington or the New York Mets, grab a fill-in. They all have the day off on Monday.

Here are the five best options.

Starting Five: Junior Ends Scoreless Seattle Marathon

Ken Griffey Jr. Seattle MarinersStarting Five is our wrapup of the previous day's baseball action, with a quick nod to what is ahead.

You Oughta Know ...
That the game in Seattle did end last night. Someone even scored a run.

Ken Griffey Jr. singled home Adrian Beltre in the bottom of the 14th to give the Mariners a 1-0 victory over the White Sox.

It was the longest 1-0 game since July 20, 2004, when Oakland beat Toronto in 14 innings. (Alex Rios played in both games, going 1-for-6 each time.)

Roto Rush: Vlad Goes Yard Twice, Including 400th of Career

Vladimir GuerreroPoppin' out the box scores and right into your cubicle, the Roto Rush is your double espresso shot of fantasy baseball advice every weekday.

Vladimir Guerrero's had a rough 2009, with injury issues and his dwindling power (his .466 slugging percentage would easily be his career low if the season ended today) causing concern the 34-year-old was full-on in the middle of a career decline.

With two cracks of the bat Monday night, "Vlad the Impaler" reminded us that he's been swinging a hot stick of late. In fact, he's been the old Vlad for quite some time. He just needed to shake the Earth a little bit to ensure everyone took notice.

Ozzie Guillen Called a Racist After Demoting Brian Anderson

When the White Sox made the decision to activate Carlos Quentin on Monday, they had a pretty tough decision to make when deciding who Quentin would replace on the roster. Essentially the decision boiled down to which player's presence on the roster would hurt the team less -- Dewayne Wise or Brian Anderson?

One is a journeyman minor-leaguer who found a role on the team last season, and the other is a former first-round draft pick that has just never lived up to the expectations. Well, the decision was made somewhat easier due to the fact that Anderson had some minor-league options left, while Wise did not. Of course, that makes too much sense, so instead some people have just started to make the claim that Ozzie Guillen is a racist instead.

Windy City Generalizations and a Faux-Rivalry

Each year the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox play six times. Six. Out of 162 total games. Those games aren't any more relevant than six games between the Twins and Cubs or Brewers and White Sox. Of course, there are millions of misguided fans who believe there's a rivalry between the two teams, a notion that is only perpetuated when our President talks about how the White Sox play "real baseball." FanHouse's resident Cubs fan (Matt Snyder) and resident White Sox fan (Tom Fornelli) got together to discuss the aura surrounding what shouldn't be a rivalry.

Rangers Sign Orlando Hernandez

So far this season it seems like the Chicago White Sox have been trying to go back in time. After getting off to a bad start to the 2009 campaign, the Sox went out and signed Scott Podsednik to a minor-league deal -- even though most scouts would have told you he was done. Well, it's worked out pretty nicelyl for Chicago as Podsednik is back on top of their lineup and playing surprisingly well.

Then, this week the White Sox signed another player from their 2005 team who most people think is washed up: Freddy Garcia. It seems like the team thinks if they get as many players as they can from 2005 they'll win another World Series. Which is why it's too bad that the Rangers had to go and destroy Chicago's "brilliant" plan.

White Sox Call Up Aaron Poreda

After the White Sox dropped the first game of a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers on Monday afternoon Ozzie Guillen laid into his team. It was Guillen's first real outburst of the season, and during his tirade he said that changes would be coming pretty soon. Well, some of those changes came earlier than Guillen figured, because in the nightcap Jose Contreras turned into a major league pitcher and Scott Podsednik broke out the big boy bat with a home run and the Sox actually won a game.

Of course those weren't the changes Guillen was talking about. The amateur draft is tonight and it seems the Sox want to promote their latest first round picks. After the Sox called up their first-round pick from last year, Gordon Beckham, last week, they went ahead and called up their first-round pick from 2007. Aaron Poreda will be joining the team in time for Tuesday's game.

Roto Rush: Mauer Out of His Mind

Poppin' out the box scores and right into your cubicle, the Roto Rush is your double espresso shot of fantasy baseball advice every weekday.

Who knew there was a hulking slugger waiting to bust out of Joe Mauer? After hitting his eighth jack in just 72 at-bats and driving in six RBI, the Twins catcher is putting all concerns to rest. Heck, he hit nine total home runs in 536 at-bats last season. So the "ailing" back is just fine, thank you very much, but is the power sustainable?

Podsednik Not CF Answer for White Sox

According to ESPN.com, the agent for Scott Podsednik said the White Sox will call up Podsednik before Friday's game (Chicago is off today). Outfielder Jerry Owens, who was 1-for-12 this season, was spotted packing his bags after Wednesday's game, so it seems like he will be designated for assignment.

Even though the White Sox are getting just a .284 slugging percentage (no homers) and .608 OPS from center field, installing Podsednik at the position could be a mistake.

"He's gone backwards, man," said a scout who recently watched Podsednik at Triple-A Charlotte. "He doesn't look good at all. I'd keep Jerry Owens over this Podsendnik. He's a below average center fielder right now."
