Travis Ford Leaves UMass for Oklahoma State

Travis Ford is leaving UMass to take the head-coaching job at Oklahoma State, ESPN's Doug Gottlieb is reporting:

That's an awfully quick change of mind for Ford, who less than a week ago said he was sticking with UMass. But Oklahoma State has the backing of billionaire T. Boone Pickens, which means the Cowboys can give coaches financial offers that make the six-figure deals of UMass look like chump change.

Ford, who previously turned down LSU, reportedly will meet with his players today to tell them he's leaving. Ford has a 62-35 record in three seasons at UMass and led them to a loss in the NIT title game this year. He replaces Sean Sutton, who resigned after failing to reach the NCAA tournament in 2007 and 2008.

Sean Sutton Out at Oklahoma State

A source told ESPN's Doug Gottlieb that Sean Sutton is out as the head coach of Oklahoma State.

Sutton was just in his 2nd year as the head coach. He took over in February of 2006 when the coach at the time ... his father Eddie Sutton ... took a leave of absence following an arrest for drunk driving. Eddie never coached at the school again and Sean took over permanently.

In his two full seasons, Sean Sutton was 39-29 with both campaigns ending in first round losses in the N.I.T.

Sean Sutton was groomed for the job by his dad, which makes this a very interesting case. With "succession plans" being the rage around sports nowadays (Pat Knight at Texas Tech; Mike Hopkins at Syracuse; Jim Mora for the Seahawks, etc.), the fact that Sean got just two years means those plans can be cancelled rather quickly. Many people feel that since these legendary coaches hand pick their successors, those newbies will be given some slack.

Apparently not.

NCAA Previews: Recognize the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles

Conference: The Summit League
Record: 24-8, 16-2 in conference
RPI: 52
How They Got In: Beating IUPUI for the Summit League title.
Seed/Bracket: #13/South

Mascot: Formerly the Titans, ORU were renamed the Golden Eagles in 1993. The mascot is named "Eli" ... an acronym for "Education, Lifestyles and Integrity".

Big Wins: They did beat Oklahoma State in Oklahoma City.

Notable Loss: Lost by 10 at Texas, lost at Arkansas by 11, lost to Texas A&M by 14, lost to Creighton by a point.

Player You Should Know:
Guard Robert Jarvis is a gunner. The Golden Eagles leading scorer isn't shy about firing up shots (and he's only hitting about 41% of them). That's mainly because he's firing up threes. He's had four games this season where he's shot at least 10 shots from behind the arc. By the way, their head coach is Scott Sutton, son of USF's Eddie Sutton and brother of Oklahoma State's Sean Sutton.

Outlook: This is ORU's third straight appearance, so they aren't going into this thing doe-eyed. Two years ago, they were leading top-seeded Memphis towards the end of the first half before getting run after halftime. Last year, ORU had a two-point lead over Washington State at the break.

Sean Sutton Rated College Basketball's 'Sweatiest Coach'

We've all seen it. We've all mocked them. We've all watched a college basketball game and wondered how a coach can take an expensive suit and sweat all over it.

The fellas over at The Money Shot have decided to compile a top five list of college basketball's sweatiest coaches.

1-Sean Sutton, Oklahoma State
2-Gary Williams, Maryland
3-Bruce Pearl, Tennessee
4-Sean Miller, Xavier
5-Kelvin Sampson, Indiana

Wow, Sutton passed up Gary Williams and Bruce Pearl!?!? Well, here is the Money Shot's explanation:

Did you watch their game on Monday @ Oklahoma? It was a thing of beauty. By the end of the game, Sutton looked like the kid that refused to take his shirt off at the pool. And he didn't wear an under shirt. It was just one very thin layer of white disgusting. Fantastic. I don't know how he did it either. Was he out drinking and driving with his old man the night before and was just trying to sweat out the gin?

Eastern Round Up: Brother Vs. Brother

Christmas is a time for families to come together. So what better time for Scott Sutton to bring his Oral Roberts Golden Eagles to Stillwater Oklahoma City for a date with Oklahoma State. His father Eddie coached OSU forever and sat courtside while Scott matched wits with brother Sean, their father's successor. The brothers didn't relish playing against each other but Sean scheduled ORU so that they could grab a little TV time. Next time I think he'll let someone else do the good deeds around the holidays.

The Golden Eagles pasted the Cowboys 74-59, taking the lead five minutes into play and never relinquishing it as the night moved on. Robert Jarvis led the winners with 21 points in their second Big 12 upset in as many years. It was Kansas in 2006, a bigger fish on paper, but some part of Scott had to take special satisfaction in knocking off his big brother. Their quest for a third straight NCAA bid looks good after they dominated the Cowboys. They took 32 free throws, forced 18 turnovers and were the better team in every phase of the game.
