NFL Fines Sheldon Brown $10K for Wearing Jason Mask

Pretty sure even those fans with just a passing interest in football probably thought to themselves, "Yep, he's definitely getting fined," when the Eagles' Sheldon Brown was announced prior to last Sunday's game while sporting a Jason mask. Gretz even fake tweeted it (proof reproduced after the jump).

And yesterday, the Real_RogerGoodell did what everybody expected: garnished Brown's wages for prematurely celebrating Halloween. Via PFT (via ESPN's Adam Schefter), Brown is now out $10,000 for the "uniform violation."

Report: Eagles Offered Sheldon Brown for Anquan Boldin

Will Anquan Boldin ever get his wish to be traded from the Arizona Cardinals?

If these reports are accurate, it doesn't appear the Arizona Cardinals were able to drum up much serious interest in disgruntled receiver Anquan Boldin in advance of the draft. The Bears apparently offered a second-round pick, and according to Kent Somers in the Arizona Republic, the best the Eagles offered was a third-rounder plus (also) disgruntled cornerback Sheldon Brown.

The Eagles may still be interested, though with first-round pick Jeremy Maclin in the fold they now have more leverage than they did before the draft. And there are still teams (Jets, anyone?) with glaring needs at receiver. But if all the Cardinals have been able to get are the offers mentioned above, it begins to look as if Boldin might not get his wish to be traded out of Arizona before training camps start.

Earlier this offseason Donovan McNabb said he wanted to see how the Eagles upgraded the roster before he would talk about a contract extension. After last fall, when things got so bad that Andy Reid benched McNabb for Kevin Kolb, it looked as if neither head coach nor starting quarterback would be in Philly another year, much less long term.

The first day of minicamps are over for the day and we recap some highlights.

Vikings coach Brad Childress could have taken the easy way out Friday when asked about retired quarterback Brett Favre.

Instead he said, "We haven't (talked about Favre); it doesn't mean we won't ... We talk about everything, from what's going on in the United States today. We talk about everything, so yeah, I'm sure we'll talk about that."

Earlier in the day, Bus Cook, Favre's agent said his client was done playing. Also, top draft choice Percy Harvin missed the first day of rookie camp but he seems OK.

Ellis Hobbs Shocked to Be Traded, Unhappy With Current Contract

Along with the 256 college players drafted last weekend, cornerback Ellis Hobbs also got a new home: the Patriots sent him to the Eagles for a pair of fifth-rounders. It was a surprising move, even for the trade-for-picks-happy Pats. Not only because cornerback was a liability last season in New England, but also because Hobbs is one of the best kick returners in the league.

The Patriots signed Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden this spring, and '08 second-rounder Terrence Wheatley will compete for playing time with his '09 counterpart, Darius Butler. Which made it easier to jettison Hobbs, despite the fact that he started every game the last two seasons.

Sheldon Brown Demands Trade, Eagles Call Demand 'Unfortunate'

Sheldon Brown recently asked the Eagles for a new contract (and/or a re-worked deal). The Eagles denied that request and, reportedly, Brown demanded a trade on Monday afternoon. The Eagles have quickly responded.

And, um, frankly, this one of those situations, just a few days (hours according to some countdown clocks) before the NFL Draft that seems like a total nightmare for everyone involved.

Is NFL Treating Andy Reid Better Than Players? Two Eagles Think So

Eagles coach Andy Reid was the owner and head of household in a home that a judge has called a drug emporium. His two sons were buying, selling and using drugs in his home for years. Those drugs included steroids.

In this ESPN report, two Eagles, cornerback Sheldon Brown and running back Correll Buckhalter, say that if a player had similar things going on in his, home, he'd face league discipline:

Those are some interesting words from players who clearly believe that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell would have disciplined them if a judge had reason to call their home a "drug emporium." And I think they're right: Goodell would crack down on a player in these circumstances, but he's shown no inclination to get involved in the Reid case.

Birds Young Defense Surprisingly Strong

It took an incomplete pass attempt from Chad Pennington on 4th and goal to put the game firmly in the Eagles control yesterday. Against a rather weak Jets team, a 7 point win isn't anything to brag about. But a win is exactly what the Eagles needed coming off of their bye week. They got that notch in the win column and the defense played a huge part in it.

Coming into the 2007 season, the offense was the unit expected to be carrying this team. After five games, the defense has shined while the offense has struggled to find a rhythm and put the ball in the endzone. With the departure of Eagles mainstays such as Jeremiah Trotter, Dhani Jones, Michael Lewis, etc., the Birds got young in a hurry. The new guys have stepped up and come prepared, so says veteran Sheldon Brown, "Those guys study. They get the game plan, in and out. There have been very few mistakes - and this defense is hard. It's amazing. They're true pros."

Pennington Makes an Argument for Change

The only thing different for the Jets this Sunday were their uniforms. They got another lackluster performance from their quarterback and failed to take advantage of copious opportunities in the second half of another loss. 16-9 was the final this time and the loss may have nailed the coffin shut on Chad Pennington's starting role.

The defense, despite giving up 120 yards to Brian Westbrook, held the Eagles to 16 points, sacked Donovan McNabb three times and intercepted him inside his own 20. Thomas Jones was a force with 130 yards rushing and helped the offense into the red zone on three other occasions. Leon Washington set the Jets up with great field position with another splendid kick return. And with all that help Pennington did absolutely nothing.

The four red zone trips, Pennington was 2-5 for nine yards and a sack in those situations, resulted in three Mike Nugent field goals and a missed opportunity on fourth-and-one with three and a half minutes to play. It wasn't a great call, a fade to Laveranues Coles when they should have run Jones, but Pennington's execution was even worse. He underthrew the ball, Sheldon Brown knocked it away and the Jets fell to defeat once again.

After Putrid Start, Eagles Get Going, Tied 10-10 at the Half with Packers

It was ugly early for the Birds. Greg Lewis made the decision to field a punt inside his own ten yard line. This proved to be costly. Lewis instantly got smacked and coughed up the ball, which the Packers recovered in the endzone to go up 7-0.

The Packers followed it up with a field goal and took an early 10-0 lead. You would have thought a ten point lead on their home field of Lambeau would be a huge boost for the Pack. Brett Favre helped the Eagles out a bit and tossed a poor pass on third down which was intercepted by Sheldon Brown. Takeo Spikes almost had another key interception at the Packers own 10 yard line. Takeo couldn't come up with it.

The Eagles started off like a grade school team notching penalty after penalty. But they were down 10-0 so early, they had plenty of time to right the ship. Brian Westbrook is a machine. When the Birds are sputtering, getting Westbrook the ball in the open field is a panacea for the Eagles offense.

McNabb connected to Jason Avant on a nice ball over the middle to tie the game up at 10 going into the half. The Packers threatened on the final drive of the half, but a huge sack on Favre pushed them out of FG range. Look for a battle in the second half as two teams continue to try and find their identities.
