MMA Top 10 Bantamweights: WEC Dominates the Division

Wednesday night's WEC 44 event is a featherweight showcase, headlined by Mike Brown defending his 145-pound title against Jose Aldo.

But the WEC's bantamweight division, which won't be represented in any of Wednesday night's live fights on Versus, might be even more stacked than the featherweight division. My list of the Top 10 bantamweights in MMA is topped by six WEC fighters, with champion Brian Bowles and former champion Miguel Torres clearly the class of the division.

A couple of Shooto fighters make my list, as does Dream's Bibiano Fernandes (whom I consider a bantamweight even though he's the promotion's featherweight champ), but there's no question that at the top, the division is dominated by the WEC.

Main Events Set for WEC 45 on Dec. 19

A pair of bouts between lightweight contenders have been announced as co-headliners for the final WEC event of the year, WEC 45 on Dec. 19 at the Pearl in Las Vegas.

Donald Cerrone, coming off an interim title loss to Ben Henderson earlier this month, will take on Ed Ratcliff, while former IFL standout Chris Horodecki will make his WEC debut against Anthony Njokuani.

Jeff Curran Signed to Fight on Strikeforce: Fedor-Rogers Undercard

Former WEC contender Jeff Curran has signed with Strikeforce to compete on the undercard of the Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers event on Nov. 7 in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

Curran (29-12-1) was released after four consecutive losses with the WEC. But it's also important to note that the losses came against Urijah Faber, Mike Brown, Joseph Benavidez and Takeya Mizugaki -- arguably four of the toughest assignments for a lighterweight fighter, all in a 20-month period.

Mackens Semerzier on His MMA Upset of the Year: 'I Fully Expected to Win'

Mackens SemerzierUpon authoring perhaps the biggest upset of the year in mixed martial arts, Mackens Semerzier nonchanlantly rose from the canvas, whispered a thanks to his fallen opponent Wagnney Fabiano for the opportunity to compete against him, and simply smiled to the camera broadcasting the shocker to the world.

No one would have objected if Semerzier, who according to multiple MMA wagering sites entered the bout as the biggest underdog of the 10-card WEC event, pulled out a bottle of champagne and uncorked it right in the center of the cage. Instead, he illustrated the maturity that led to his win in the first place by controlling his emotions in a supercharged moment.

"I say this with total confidence: I fully expected to win," said the previously little-known Semerzier, who improbably submitted top three featherweight Fabiano with a triangle choke. "Not that I walk around saying I can beat anyone, but that's a thing for me in life: you can always win. You can always find a way. I always thought, 'I'm going to figure out a way to do it. So when I win, it doesn't surprise me."

MMA Top 10 Bantamweights

At first glance, not much seems to have changed in the MMA bantamweight division in the last three months. All the top bantamweights in the WEC -- Brian Bowles, Miguel Torres, Dominick Cruz, Takeya Mizugaki, Rani Yahya and Joseph Benavidez -- fought on August 9, and since then they've just been biding their time for their next fight.

But I have a new name in my new ranking of the Top 10 bantamweights in mixed martial arts: Bibiano Fernandes. Yes, I know the title Fernandes just won is the Dream featherweight belt, not the bantamweight belt. But Fernandes weighed in at 138 pounds in the Dream tournament, and if he were ever to fight in the WEC, I think he'd be a bantamweight.

And so Fernandes is listed as a bantamweight in my new rankings, which are below.

MMA Top 10 Bantamweights: Brian Bowles Is the Best in the World

For the first time in a very, very long time, Miguel Torres is not the best bantamweight in mixed martial arts. No, Brian Bowles, who dominated Torres in a first-round knockout Sunday night at WEC 42, is now the best of the bantamweights.

But while some might think it hurts the WEC to have a popular and famous champion go down, I think Bowles beating Torres has reinvigorated the bantamweight division. Bowles vs. Dominick Cruz, a rematch between Torres and Takeya Mizugaki and fights involving Rani Yahya, Manny Tapia, Akitoshi Tamura and Joseph Benavidez (who should move down to flyweight as soon as the WEC adds 125-pounders) are all on the horizon. That makes the bantamweight division more exciting than ever. The list of the top 10 bantamweights is below.

WEC 42: Frank Mir on 'Phenomenal' Takeya Mizugaki vs. Jeff Curran

Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir will be the color commentator for WEC 42 Sunday night on Versus, and all this week he's providing his insight into the WEC fights. Today I ask Mir about Takeya Mizugaki vs. Jeff Curran.

Michael David Smith: The last time we saw Takeya Mizugaki was in his loss to Miguel Torres at WEC 40, in one of the fights of the year. How do you think he matches up with Jeff Curran?
Frank Mir: I think that is a very exciting fight. Both guys have excellent hands. Jeff might try to be a little bit of a grappler in this fight, but I don't think it's going to go to the ground much. I think we're going to see a very explosive fight, with both guys going at it. I don't see this fight going to the ground or going the distance.

WEC to Stream Events Outside US

Starting with WEC 42 "Torres vs. Bowles" on Aug. 9, the WEC will introduce live streaming for fans outside of North America.

WEC Vice President Peter Dropick said Tuesday that based on international demand, specifically in Japan, future WEC events will be available on WEC.tv and UFC.com.

Takeya Mizugaki vs. Jeff Curran Likely for WEC 42 in August

Japanese bantamweight Takeya Mizugaki, who put together a thrilling fight in a losing effort against World Extreme Cagefighting champion Miguel Torres this month at WEC 40, is expected to return to the cage in August against Jeff Curran at WEC 42.

A WEC source told FanHouse that Mizugaki vs. Curran has not been signed, but the promotion wants to put the fight on and both fighters have expressed interest. WEC 42 is likely to be headlined by Torres defending the bantamweight title against Brian Bowles, and Mizugaki vs. Curran is expected to be televised on the undercard of that show.

MMA Top 10 Bantamweights: Takeya Mizugaki Moves Up With a Loss

It's not often that a fighter moves up in our MMA rankings after losing a fight, but then again it's not often that a fighter looks as impressive in a losing effort as Takeya Mizugaki looked in dropping a unanimous decision to Miguel Torres at WEC 40. So as we update our list of the Top 10 bantamweights in MMA, we've moved Mizugaki up -- ahead of everyone but Torres.
