Minnesota Vikings: All We Need Is a Quality Quarterback

Because the NFL season never ends, we present our 2009 Offseason Roadmaps for front offices to navigate through the summer.

In an NFC that is heading into the offseason without a clear favorite, the Minnesota Vikings have almost all the pieces to be the presumptive favorite. They have an outstanding defensive line, an improved secondary and the best running back in the business. They also have a very good offensive line and thanks to Bernard Berrian, the receiver corps no longer is a joke.

FanHouse Preview: Eagles at Vikings

Stay on top of all the postseason action with FanHouse's NFL playoff coverage.

It would not be bizarre of you to ask "How did the Eagles get here?" or, "Is this not Donovan McNabb's wonderful house?" Well, the second question might be weird to say out loud. But, yes, it seems odd that the Eagles are in the playoffs. After all, they had one of those controlling destiny things going on as they headed into a game against the Washington Redskins in Week 16. The result, of course, was a serious choke-job that left them all but, um, left for dead.

Then they paddled the Dallas Cowboys to embarrass their rivals and sneak into the playoffs, despite some sort of weird conspiracy that was supposed to have them not play hard. Or something. Either way, how did this happen? A miracle, mannnn, that's how.

Which is sort of the same thing that seems to be affecting Tarvaris Jackson recently, considering that he's playing "not horrible." Of course, it doesn't hurt that he has Adrian "McFumbles" Peterson running the ball behind him, a beastly offensive line, and an even more beastly defensive line to keep other teams in check.

Anyone with any sense (you know who I'm talking about) is picking the Eagles to win, because, well, Brian Westbrook is amazing and McNabb can take a game over. Of course, the Vikings can stuff the run and McNabb can totally collapse, so maybe it's not as clear cut as it might seem.

The Once-Over: Week (Ocho) Cinco

With attention spans dwindling, we forego full game-by-game previews to give you the essentials you need to know about every contest this glorious NFL weekend. Click here to go back in time.

The 1s

Tennessee (4-0) at Baltimore (2-1): Okay, fine, I'll agree, the Titans are a good football team. They're giving up just 11.5 points per game, best in the NFL, they have a competent quarterback that doesn't do anything flashy but also doesn't make a lot of mistakes (only one interception in four games) and a rookie running back in Chris Johnson that made every fantasy owner that didn't snag him do a collective head slap. Interesting little comparison here, last week Johnson had just 19 less yards than Adrian Peterson with one less carry and as many touchdowns. Also worth noting, the 4-0 Titans have just one nationally televised game the rest of the season, October 27 against the Colts, while the Browns still have four. Does Al Davis also dabble in national television scheduling? Cool.

Pick -- Tennessee

Injuries To Watch: Week 2

Every week when the dinner bell rings on Friday evening, we'll be here to provide you a comprehensive injury report for the NFL weekend to follow. For those injuries that go right down to the wire, drop by our live Fantasy Fanhouse experts live chat from 10 am to 1 pm every Sunday and we'll take care of you on those bloody game-time decisions. As always, please feel free to chime in with opinions, updates, and rumors in the comments.

The Baltimore Ravens

Todd Heap - Heap left the game last week after coming in as Probable. Now listed as questionable, he is not looking like a great start either way.

Willis McGahee - Looks like Willis should be ready to kick off his 2008 season this week against the Texans. He seems to be improving, but not 100% quite yet though, so keep a close eye on him. After all, he was expected to go last week. The Hurricane Ike related move to Monday night helps McGahee owner's chances.

The Buffalo Bills

The Bills do not have any material injuries to watch, but it bears mentioning that their best lineman, Jason Peters, finally ended his contract holdout and is ready to go this week. Marshawn Lynch owners everywhere are currently doing the worm.

Your Monday Night Football Fantasy Preview: Week One Doubleheader

Yes, yes, I know. You followed our fantasy advice all weekend and your teams are already far enough ahead. But there may still be some people filtering in on the hot street rumor that FanHouse pwns and what not. So we've got to show some love and examine some of the important fantasy players in both games tonight.

Minnesota Vikings @ Green Bay Packers (7:00 EST)
Denver Broncos @ Oakland Raiders (10:15 EST)
You should probably know, at this point, to start Adrian Peterson. You do know that, right? Don't bench him for Ryan Grant or anything. Who you should probably have already benched. If you haven't, I actually rank him last out of all the backs involved in tonight's games, so, yeah: bench him if you own (in order) AP, Selvin Young (who you should also start if you own), Darren McFadden or Justin Fargas. The Vikings' rush defense is just too stout to expect a whole lot.

New QB Aaron Rodgers is only a start in a two QB league but if he's in your lineup at this point, you're probably going to end up rolling the dice. Tonight only Jay Cutler is better and if you've got Rodgers penciled in to start right now, you've already got issues. I'd avoid JaMarcus Russell or whatever corpse the Vikes roll out in place of Tavaris Jackson.

Fantasy Roundtable: LaDanian Tomlinson, Adrian Peterson and the First Overall Pick

The Fantasy FanHouse team will occasionally debate pre-draft topics for your perusement and amusement. Any excuse for a Roundtable really. Today's topic: what to do with that first overall pick, should it fall your way.

Will Brinson: There are only two choices with the first overall pick -- LaDanian Tomlinson and Adrian Peterson -- unless you're in Chad Johnson's fantasy league. Then you draft Ocho Cinco first, hold him out from fantasy training camp and trade him to the real 85 for his first five picks. But since that horrible joke won't become reality isn't happening, you gotta pick LT or AP. So who ya got?

Matthew Greber: Well, it's not like the #1 pick always works out but this year that pick has the most uncertainty in a long time. But if I do get that pick, I'm probably taking LDT each and every time. (Note...not LT, that's a taken nickname, folks. Either LT2 or LDT.)

Matt Snyder: Has to be LDT. His rushing totals have gone 1236, 1683, 1645, 1335, 1462, 1815, and 1474 with an average of 16 TDs per season. Even if you think Peterson can exceed those numbers (which I don't), he won't garner the additional points LDT will through the air -- both as a receiver and a passer.

Vikings at 49ers: Purple Jesus Might Outscore the 49ers By Himself

To get you ready for Week 14, FanHouse is previewing all 16 NFL games. Here is your Minnesota Vikings/San Francisco 49ers preview.

2007 Records:

Minnesota Vikings: 6-6 (2nd in NFC North)
San Francisco 49ers: 3-9 (3rd in NFC West)

Last Game(s):

Vikings 42, Lions 10
Panthers 31, 49ers 14

Why We Care: Nobody really gave the Vikings much of a chance before the season, and they seemed to justify that lack of faith early in the season (despite Adrian Peterson's better attempts). But they've won three in a row and four of their last five. They've got the most exciting young player in the league right now, a great run game, and a strong defense. That's a formula for playoff success -- if the Vikings can continue this momentum into the postseason, they could surprise a team or two.

Cowboys at Lions: The Bounty Hunters are Coming for Jon Kitna

To get you ready for Week 14, FanHouse is previewing all 16 NFL games. Here is your Dallas Cowboys/Detroit Lions preview.

2007 Records:

Dallas Cowboys: 11-1 (1st in NFC East)
Detroit Lions: 6-6 (3rd in NFC North)

Last Game(s):

Cowboys 37, Packers 27
Vikings 42, Lions 10

Why We Care: There are some interesting storylines here. First of all, there's the possibility of seeing Jon Kitna decapitated on live television. OK, not really, but despite what backtracking Terence Newman has done on his threats to maim Kitna, the Cowboys are most certainly not happy with the God-fearing quarterback. On top of that, Dallas is struggling to remain with the Patriots and Colts in the conversation of the NFL's best (not like beating Detroit will make them any more credible, but whatevs). And the Lions are just hoping to stop the bleeding caused by a tailspin that's done lots of damage to their playoff chances.

Week 14: Last Chance For a Lions Victory?

Entering this Sunday's game, the Lions and Vikings are both reeling. The Lions, who can' t find the means necessary to preserve a lead or win a game during the fourth quarter, and the Vikings, whose offense has fallen flat during the second half of the season and are possibly going to make a change at quarterback this week, are both on a major season-ending skid. This may be the last remaining winnable game for the Lions on their schedule this season.

The Lions offense must find a way to limit their turnovers. Fourth quarter turnovers have especially prevented the Lions from enjoying any success during this season. The Vikings have a stout run defense that will likely limit Kevin Jones from gaining significant rushing yards this week. The Lions must stick to running the ball occasionally, but will likely find their most success attacking the Minnesota secondary. The Lions patchwork offensive line will have to provide QB Jon Kitna with the time necessary to operate under this scenario. This game is likely to be a time of possession, field position battle, unless one team coughs the ball up too much, in which case, the recipient of those turnovers will likely have a decided advantage.

Defensively, the struggling Minnesota offense will likely continue to be dumbed down, as QB Brad Johnson struggles in the passing game. With that in mind, the Lions likely can load up the box to attempt to prevent RB Chester Taylor from enjoying much success. If the Lions can limit Taylor and force the game onto Johnson's shoulders, or rookie QB Tavaris Jackson should Johnson falter, they may have a realistic chance for victory. The Vikings will likely attempt to exploit the middle of the Lions zone defense, which has been soft all year, with crossing passes to TE Jermaine Wiggins or deep passes to WR's Marcus Robinson or Troy Williamson.

I have lost any residual hope that I harbor for the Lions this year. The Lions will need a superlative effort, along with a little luck, to beat an ailing Vikings team. The Lions gave a valiant effort for three quarters last week amidst a poor performance by the Patriots, it is up to the Vikings if they want to allow the Lions another opportunity for victory.
