Barriers are not always smashed with a sledgehammer. Sometimes they're chiseled away a little at a time.
A case in point is MMA's move to mainstream acceptance, which has occurred in bits and pieces. The latest step forward comes courtesy of welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, who has signed a multi-year endorsement deal with top-selling athletic brand Under Armour.
A knee injury has forced welterweight Thiago Alves to pull out of his scheduled bout against Jon Fitch at UFC 107. FanHouse learned of the news Friday morning.
The Alves-Fitch fight was put together late last week after Fitch's opponent at UFC 106, Ricardo Almeida, pulled out due to a knee injury as well. Alves was originally scheduled to fight Paulo Thiago at UFC 107, but once Fitch was left without an opponent, the UFC booked the rematch. No word just yet on who, if anyone, Fitch will be facing on the Dec. 12 show in Memphis, TN.
The promotion had booked the show with the location in mind to coincide with Memphis-born light heavyweight Quinton "Rampage" Jackson's expected fight against Rashad Evans as the culmination of their coaching feud on The Ultimate Fighter 10 series. However, Jackson's film pursuits will stall the grudge match and Penn vs. Sanchez was moved from UFC 105 to UFC 107 to have a championship bout round out the final UFC event of 2009.
Reigning UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre -- still on the mend from a groin injury he suffered in his last successful title defense against Thiago Alves -- is targeting a likely January 2010 return to the octagon, his manager Shari Spencer told FanHouse.
The 28-year-old St. Pierre suffered the injury in the third round of the UFC 100 bout and gutted his way through the pain for the remainder of the five-round fight, earning a lopsided unanimous decision. In the aftermath, he feared a torn groin, but received a reprieve when doctors informed him the injury was not as serious as previously thought, and that no surgery was necessary. St. Pierre, who is hoping to gain clearance to return to full-contact sparring within the next two weeks, has recently been enjoying his downtime with a trip to Saint-Tropez, France.
"He's feeling well and just waiting for clearance to resume his full-contact training," Spencer said.
At one point in 2007, it seemed as though Hayato "Mach" Sakurai was ready to ply his trade across the globe in the UFC. But the Japanese MMA star never quite made it. For various reasons, Sakurai stayed in Japan, where he remains one of the stalwarts of the nation's MMA scene. In the DREAM welterweight Grand Prix quarterfinals in April, he scored a dominant TKO win over Shinya Aoki (video above).
On Monday, Sakurai (35-8) will square off in a semifinal bout with Marius Zaromskis, a native Lithuanian with a 9-2 record. The winner will meet the Jason High-Andre Galvao victor later in the night for the tournament championship. The event will air on HDNet.
Sakurai recently answered some questions about the fight and his career for FanHouse via email and through an intrepreter.
Georges St. Pierre has, in his last five fights, avenged his only two career losses and beaten the three toughest opponents the UFC could find for him. He's dominated all five fights, winning all 18 rounds. So what's next for GSP?
Take a look after examining my list of the Top 10 welterweights in MMA.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission has handed down medical suspensions to thirteen out of the 22 competitors following Saturday's UFC 100 event in Las Vegas.
UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre has been suspended until at least Aug. 11, 2009 and must have his right groin cleared by a doctor or else the suspension will be extended until Jan. 8, 2010. The injury occurred when opponent Thiago Alves pushed down on St-Pierre's knee while St-Pierre was in guard. St. Pierre heard a pop and immediately knew something was wrong, but with adrenaline masking his pain, St-Pierre went on to win every single round for the unanimous decision.
LAS VEGAS --Thiago Alves was supposed to be Georges St. Pierre's biggest test, but when the time came, GSP was easily up to the challenge of defending his UFC welterweight championship at UFC 100, earning a unanimous decision by winning every round on all three judges' scorecards.
But what makes St. Pierre's performance even more amazing is that he managed to dominate Alves even after likely tearing an adductor muscle in the third round.
St. Pierre said that the injury occurred during the third round when he was on the bottom in guard position. When Alves pushed his knee down in an attempt to pass guard, St. Pierre heard a snap.
LAS VEGAS -- Brock Lesnar walked into the UFC less than 18 months ago with little more than a scant few months of training, a wicked tongue and an unshakable faith in his physical gifts. And even after losing his UFC debut to Frank Mir, he was the organization's heavyweight champion within nine months.
And now, after avenging that loss to Mir, the world will start to wonder just who can stop the goliath king. Lesnar dominated Mir from start to finish in scoring a second-round TKO at UFC 100.
