College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2009 Announced

The National Football Foundation has announced 16 players and two coaches have ascended to the College Football Hall of Fame. Its not the sexiest list ever, but whatever, its got John Robinson and a pair of Heisman Trophy winners among the honorees.

Notre Dame receiver Tim Brown and (snicker) Miami quarterback Gino Torretta are joined by notables like Arizona's hard-hitting safety Chuck Cecil, Ohio State linebacker and ESPN analyst Chris Spielman, and West Virginia's Major Harris -- who was Pat White before there was a Pat White.

Isaac Bruce Returning to 49ers

On Wednesday, 15-year veteran Isaac Bruce made a decision regarding his future in the NFL as the 36-year-old wide receiver informed the 49ers he will be returning for the 2009 season. According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, Bruce called head coach Mike SIngletary this morning and informed him of the news.

He led the 49ers with 61 catches and 835 yards in 2008, while also surpassing Tim Brown for the No. 2 spot on the NFL's all-time receiving yards list.

Tim Brown Would Love to Work for Al Davis, Claims Rich Gannon Hates the Raiders

Recently, when former Raiders have spoken out about the current situation in Oakland, their words have been harsh, and for the most part negative. So it was quite a surprise -- to me, anyway -- to see Tim Brown proclaim that he would absolutely love to take a job with the struggling franchise. Seriously.

This brings the number of people who are currently willing to work for Al Davis to two: Tim Brown and Matt Snyder (surely you haven't forgotten this).

From Jerry McDonald of the Contra Costa Times (via PFT):
"It would take me about two seconds to make that decision. At some point, home is home, and even though I reside in Dallas, Dallas is not home for me when it comes to the NFL. The love I get when I'm in Oakland, that's home for me. I realize that, and if the Raiders ever asked me to do anything in the front office, certainly I would jump at the opportunity because I do think, not just my presence in Oakland, but in some of the decision making as far as what's happening with coaches and players that come in, I think I could be very instrumental in helping in that area."

Brett Favre Joins the 'Great Players Who End Career In Weird Jerseys' Team*

*-well, of somewhat recent history.

We all know that Brett Favre will play his first game as a New York Jet this week and the shock of seeing him in a non-Packers jersey will be a bit frightening (as was seeing Jason Taylor in Redskins garb). Still, it isn't like we haven't seen this before from our recently great players.

QB-Brett Favre (Jets)
RB-Emmitt Smith (Cardinals)
RB-Thurman Thomas (Dolphins)
WR-Jerry Rice (Seahawks)
WR-Chris Carter (Dolphins)
WR-Tim Brown (Buccaneers)
OT-Tony Boselli (Texans ... even though he didn't play)
OT-Richmond Webb (Bengals)
OG-Randal McDaniel (Buccaneers)
OG-Bill Fralic (Lions)
C-Mike Webster (Chiefs)

Tim Brown Is the Latest Person Marginally Related to the NFL to Comment on Brett Favre

We're well on our way to everybody weighing in on the Brett Favre situation, and Tim Brown, former Oakland Raiders wideout, now has the microphone:
... Brown says Brett Favre should stay retired and that there's "absolutely, positively" no way the star quarterback will return to the Green Bay Packers.

"There's no way he's going to be back in that locker room now," Brown said this week. "Absolutely, positively no way. They're just trying to say the right thing, hoping that he comes to his senses." ...

"I don't think he serves himself or anybody any good by coming back," he said. "Bottom line is this: If this was anybody else, this wouldn't be a conversation, because they'd be like, 'Man, you're retired. Go on about your business. What's wrong with you?'
I'm pretty sure Packers general manager Ted Thompson agrees with Brown, but as FoxSports.com's Jason Whitlock points out, Thompson has everything to lose by letting Favre go, and virtually nothing to gain, barring a out-of-his-mind first-year performance by Aaron Rodgers.

So while it seems odd to suggest that a just-retired 17-year veteran has all the leverage, that's exactly the case. I don't think Favre's return is in the best (long-term) interests of the Packers, but nobody'll be complaining if Green Bay wins another Super Bowl. Of course, if Favre's next last pass is of the season-ending-interception variety, we'll all be back on the Aaron Rodgers bandwagon. So there's that.

In the meantime, I'm with Brown in theory, but Whitlock in practice.

Irish Line Is Offensive

It doesn't matter who Notre Dame starts at quarterback this season. It can be Jimmy Clausen, Demetrius Jones or Evan Sharpley, in the end it won't matter.

The Irish could bring back Joe Montana, Jerome Bettis, and Tim Brown, and they still won't win many games this season.

Why?

Because their offensive line sucks. Bad. Trust me, I played on a bad offensive line in high school, so I know what they look like, and Notre Dame's line is bad. They were killed by Georgia Tech in the home opener, and they got mauled by the Nittany Lions this last Saturday.

Penn State sacked Jimmy Clausen six times on Saturday, and the Irish didn't gain a single yard on 26 carries. This coming off a performance against Georgia Tech in which the Irish managed -8 yards on 41 carries. That's 65 carries for -8 yards. Or if you prefer averages, that's -.12 yards a carry.

Did I mention the numerous false starts and holding penalties? How about the fact the Irish are yet to score an offensive touchdown this season?

SI Celebrates a Michigan Legend: Tim Brown

Desmond Howard is not just another Heisman winner. He may be the most iconic Heisman guy of them all, what with Keith Jackson going "hellloooooo Heisman" as he busted the statue's pose out after his game-changing punt return touchdown against Ohio State. That's why EA put him on the cover and not, say, Rashaan Salaam when they wanted to pump up their new "Race for the Heisman" mode a couple years ago. He's also been on TV a lot recently.

But don't tell that to Sports Illustrated. The Realests bring us an unforgivable error:

Tim Brown? TIM BROWN? From Notre Dame? For this, there can be no forgiveness.
