The Perfect Draft: San Francisco 49ers

With the draft approaching, we ignore projections and identify the dream scenario for each team in a series we call The Perfect Draft.

Like their neighbors across the bay, the San Francisco 49ers are mired in a string of futility, failing to make the playoffs since the 2002 season. Thanks to a strong finish in 2008 and what is, perhaps, the weakest division in the NFL, there should be some optimism in San Francisco heading into 2009. What do the 49ers need to return to glory?

LaDainian Tomlinson, Chargers Agree on 3-Year, Restructured Deal

LaDainian Tomlinson and the San Diego Chargers have finally ended their offseason-long soap opera by agreeing on a three-year contract that restructures the running back's original deal.

While "LdT" will take some reductions in his 2010 and 2011 base-compensation numbers, he'll now make the same amount he was originally scheduled to earn in 2009: $6.75 million, which, not coincidentally, is $1.75 million more than Darren Sproles will earn if he signs the team's franchise tender.

Colts Agree to Cut Marvin Harrison

Marvin Harrison made it abundantly clear that he wants nothing to do with the Indianapolis Colts next season, asking for his release after the team asked him to take a pay cut.

And the Colts, acquiescing to his request, have agreed to release the always popular but recently troubled wide receiver, according to his agent Tom Condon.

Raiders Close to Signing Asomugha

In news that would be nothing short of a shock, it appears as if the Oakland Raiders are closing in on a long-term contract extension with Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. It's long been assumed that the Raiders would have to use the franchise tag on him for a second straight year, but the two sides are apparently close to a contract extension.

Earlier in the day, Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee offered up a quick report that a deal could be close. Now, Jim Trotter of Sports Illustrated claims Asomugha's agent, Tom Condon, has already forwarded a potential contract to the NFL for approval.

Agent: 'Marvin Harrison Was Not Involved in Any Shooting. The Report Is Erroneous'

The shocking report that Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison is accused of being involved in a shooting in Philadelphia is being denied by Harrison's agent, Tom Condon.

"Marvin Harrison was not involved in any shooting. The report is erroneous," Condon told FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer.

No one has been arrested in connection to the incident on Tuesday, in which a man was shot in the hand and a girl was injured by broken glass. Police say they have no suspects.

But WIP radio reported that the male victim argued with Harrison inside the North Philadelphia bar Harrison owns, Playmakers. When the victim left the bar, Harrison followed him, and gunfire broke out, the radio station reports.

The radio station also reported that bullets recovered from the scene came from a custom-made Belgian gun, a type of gun that Harrison owns, and that when they went to a Philadelphia car wash owned by Harrison, questioned him there, and discovered through ballistic tests that the gun had fired bullets matching those at the scene.

That Marc Bulger Deal Will Get Done, Thanks to the ESPYs

The agent for Marc Bulger, Tom Condon, attended the filming of the ESPYs in Los Angeles earlier this week. Rams team president Jay Zygmunt was in L.A. for a reunion of former Rams players. So the two decided to have lunch. The talking point? A new deal for Bulger.

Bulger himself is confident a deal will get done before the Rams begin training camp on July 26th. MDS and I agree. Still, he wouldn't be an NFL player if he didn't at least threaten a holdout if the deal isn't done by the 26th. He has since softened on that stance, saying that his holdout comments were "blown out of proportion."

The talks obviously didn't produce a new deal, but they did narrow the gap. Bulger should be looking at a deal around the $60 million that Tom Brady and Drew Brees are getting paid. Whether or not the deal gets done before training camp remains to be seen, but, regardless, Marc Bulger will not holdout, he will get a deal soon, and it will be with St. Louis.
