Making the Cut: Tiger's Tourney

Each Wednesday during the golf season, FanHouse will list the top five names in golf and why they're important. Did Barack play 18 with Tiger? Did a certain player do something controversial off the course? Or was just playing golf enough to get the pot stirring? Join us for a weekly feature we call Making the Cut.

5. Tony Romo -- On Wednesday, Romo got the unique pleasure of teeing it up with Mr. Woods during the pro-am of the AT&T National. Not only is the Cowboys quarterback getting flak from college coaches and sports bloggers alike, but he is having to try and keep his game together with the best in the world. Sure, Tiger played a little with Peyton Manning earlier this year, but Romo's game is at a different level. Maybe next year, Woods will invite Ben Roethlisberger for some true competition?

Gary Williams Encourages You to Boo Tony Romo During Pro-Am

At 6:30 this morning, Tony Romo, inexplicably at Tiger Woods' invitation, joined the world's best player in the AT&T National pro-am at Congressional Country Club, some 20 miles west of FedEx Field, home of the Washington Redskins.

On Tuesday, Tiger said that, "...It's just going to be a fun round," before adding, "...but also an interesting one. Granted, he's used to getting booed, and it is what it is. It comes with being, I guess team sport, away from home."

And University of Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams did his part to make sure that's exactly what happened.

Tiger Responds to Jim Brown Criticism

Last week, Jim Brown, as he seems to do every year or so, called out a high-profile minority athlete for not speaking out on social issues.

Tony Romo: Terrell Owens Is a Great Player Who's Hard to Replace

Terrell Owens said last week the Dallas Cowboys got rid of him to make him a scapegoat for Tony Romo's failure to become a leader. But when Romo was asked this week to respond to Owens' comments, he declined to get into a war of words with his highly volatile ex-teammate.

Tiger Woods Speaks on Michael Jackson, New Grooves and Tony Romo

Even Tiger Woods, the man that tends to stay away from the hot button topics, spoke up this week at the AT&T National, the tournament Woods hosts, about Michael Jackson.

As you now know, Jackson died on Thursday at the age of 50, leaving most Americans mourning the passing of a music legend. Tiger, who grew up listening to Jackson's music, said that he was one of the best entertainers of all time.

Will 10 Quarterbacks Top 4,000 Passing Yards This Season?

Drew BreesRetired NFL quarterback Trent Green is the first-ever guest columnist of MMQB, filling in while Peter King is on vacation. Green provided an interesting read on subjects relating to the league's personal conduct policy, concussions and the expanded season. And of course it wouldn't be a MMQB without a healthy dose of Favre thrown in for good measure.

What jumps out of Green's article is his prediction that 10 quarterbacks will have over 4,000 yards passing this season. He says six are a lock to do it (Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Kurt Warner, Phillip Rivers and Aaron Rodgers), and seven have the potential to do it (Jay Cutler, Matt Cassel, Carson Palmer, Matt Schaub, Donovan McNabb, Tony Romo, Matt Hasselbeck).

Let's put this prediction in context:

T.O. Doesn't Think Romo Is a Leader

Leadership is a funny thing, Tony Romo said a few weeks ago.

When you're winning football games nobody says anything about it. When you're losing, everybody talks about the lack of it.

Thursday afternoon, Terrell Owens made note of the lack of leadership in his last season with the Cowboys -- a year that ended with a 9-7 record and no playoff berth. Notably, Owens singled out Romo, his quarterback of the last three seasons for not being a leader.

It's funny, but Owens never questioned Romo's leadership abilities before. But now, Owens is of the belief that the quarterback had something to do with him getting released by the Cowboys.

Tony Romo, Tiger Woods to Play AT&T National Pro-Am

A year ago, Tony Romo joined Justin Timberlake and Matt Lauer in a round of celebrity golf at Torrey Pines the week before the U.S. Open. He fired an 84, which, to hear him tell it, was disappointing.

In general, a 2-handicap isn't all that jazzed about a 14-over round, but I'm guessing Romo doesn't regularly play on courses that feature 4-inch rough, 20-yard-wide fairways, and greens rolling 14 on the stimpmeter. But, hey, the guy sets high standards for himself.

Last month, between organized team activities at his day job, Romo tried and failed to qualify for the Byron Nelson Championship. And next week he will play with Tiger Woods in the AT&T National pro-am.

Cowboys Heavy Metal Group Lands Debut Record Deal

Marc Colombo, Cory Procter and Leonard Davis are members of the Cowboys offensive line and they have this heavy metal group called Free Reign. The man who plays guitar is Justin Chapman -- he's not a NFL player, but he's good at what he does.

The band just signed a deal with Australia's Riot Entertainment. A debut EP should come out in the fall.

On Second Thought: Quarterbacks

The best thing about the build up to the next NFL season is the exact same thing as the worst. If that makes sense. It's fun to dissect every aspect of everything, but it can also be maddening when you consider we're still just under three months until an actual, real NFL game is played. Regardless, things constantly change in terms of fantasy football draft value.

What I'll do in On Second Thought is take a look at the rankings we compiled as a staff and point out which players I believe we collectively ranked too high and vice versa. This isn't a slap in the face to my colleagues, as some of the rankings I didn't like were my fault (you'll see one here). Plus, we started working on them a month ago. Things change.
