Crew Chief Ruins Earnhardt Jr.'s Possible Win

Dale Earnhardt Jr. chose to race in Saturday's Nationwide Series race because he doesn't consider himself a great road course racer and wanted to get more experience to help his team get a better finish for Sunday's Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen.

Next year, he might think about serving as crew chief in the Nationwide event so he can overcome blunders like the one Tony Eury Jr. got the No. 88 into Sunday afternoon while Earnhardt Jr. was leading.

The Hendrick Motorsports driver led 33 of the race's 90 laps, but he didn't lead anymore after a caution came out while he was leading on lap 64.

Junior to Do the Dew and Other Silly Rumors

So Ginn Racing didn't close both the #13 and #14 Nextel Cup teams this week, just their Busch team, which amounted to roughly 30 people losing their jobs, save the spotter who was promoted to Cup. But, even though they haven't closed the books, Bobby Ginn seems to have made both team's numbers available on the open owner market, with the likelihood of selling the #13 to the highest bidder.

And what owner might be willing to buy its way into the top 35? Teresa Earnhardt is the leading runner. Paul Menard isn't going to be able to climb his way into the top 35 himself if he can't qualify for a race. DEI's got the cash to compensate. You put it together.

Speaking of DEI's cash ... Budweiser is ready move on next year, but not with Dale Earnhardt Jr. Budweiser is reportedly setting their sites on Kasey Kahne now. Score Ray Evernham!

That leaves Junior wide open to Do the Dew, which I think means he would also give up his personal appearances contract with Bud, which is good considering he'll need time for Sony and Adidas now. Wow. Junior really scored on the upgrade of free goods, huh? Also ... look for Junior to give the #14 team's displaced spotter, his buddy T.J. Majors, a shot on the #? Mountain Dew Chevrolet next season. Reminder: Free the #8!

What that means for Kellogg's I have no idea, but about the Kellogg's driver ...

A source tells me that Kyle Busch has already decided on Richard Childress Racing and is expected to take a lot of his crew with him. By a lot, I take it to mean his crew chief, Alan Gustafson (making room for Tony Eury Jr.), and whoever else wants to come along. Maybe the sponsor will follow, too.

Pops to Leave DEI, Sticks with Nephew

Update: Official Announcement
---
According to listeners of both Sirius and XM satellite radio's NASCAR shows, Tony Eury Sr. will announce his departure from Dale Earnhardt Inc. Wednesday.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s uncle will join JR Motorsports as the Team Director.

Interesting, considering he was recently tapped to head DEI's new research and development team. Hardly surprising, though. Apparently, Eury never accepted the position as reported.

The elder Eury has been with DEI since it was founded in 1988 and prior to that he worked for Dale Earnhardt's Busch team. Even as tykes Earnhardt and Eury Sr. hung out at the track while their own dads raced each other.

No one should be surprised that the man whose hands Dale Sr. originally put his son's career in is following Junior out the door. I couldn't be more pleased that he will continue to be an influence on Junior and bring his experience to JRM. As a Busch Series crew chief, he claims 1997 Rookie of the Year honors for Steve Park and back-to-back Busch titles for Dale Jr. in 1998 and 1999. JRM could use a little of that.

Earnhardts and Eurys stick together. Way it always has been, way it always will be.

Now, how long before we see Tony Jr.'s announcement?
