Black is Out at Utah

I'm so happy that the trend to try and add black to every uniform is finally over. Many schools are finally realizing that black in the uniforms -- whether special "alternative" uniforms like Duke or just adding the black as some sort of accent or extra color to the unis -- doesn't make them look hipper or do much to boost sales. All they do is make people miss the original uniforms and generally makes all the uniforms look alike.

The Utah Utes are the latest to come to that realization. Utah will have new uniforms for the 2007-08 season that ditch the black.
The new uniforms will feature an all crimson and white look. In past years, black had been used as an accent color on uniforms, although the official school colors are crimson and white. In addition to the color scheme, Utah's uniforms will have several other notable differences from the past.

"We need to get back to the principles of defense, running the floor and rebounding," said [head coach Jim] Boylen. "Those are the parts of the game that the tradition of this program was built on. Our colors are red and white. Black is not one of our colors. I've received a ton of letters from alumni requesting that we take black off the uniform. I agree with them. This is an outward statement of an inward commitment that we've made to get back to the ideals and traditions of this program."
The Utes also added a message to the shorts. The team's motto is "U, Us & the Muss." The home unis will have the U, US, MUSS on the shorts while the road unis will just say "MUSS." Muss is the name of the Utah student section.

The message on the shorts seems a bit much. Nice that they want to pay respect to the student section, but couldn't they just do an extra autograph session or something.

Utah Options for New Offense Against Bruins

For the second game in a row, an underdog team travels to the Rose Bowl with a running quarterback and a dream. Unlike the January 6th BCS Title Game, however, the stakes are relatively low when the Utah Utes visit the UCLA Bruins this Saturday.

Two years after their Fiesta Bowl appearance, the Utah Utes have sent quarterback Alex Smith to the San Francisco 49ers and Coach Urban Meyer to the Florida Gators, but under head coach Kyle Whittingham, the Utes have not abandoned the much-ballyhooed spread option offense and have made beating the Bruins one of their top goals of the season (sounds like the USC Trojans of the late 1990's!).

Regrettably for the Utes, unlike when Texas came to town, they'll be performing to a less-than packed house (UCLA has sold less than 40,000 season tickets this year) and, franly, all eyes in Los Angeles will be focused on Fayetteville.
