Signing Day: Alshon Jeffery Becomes Second USC Decommit, May Not Be Last

USC coach Pete Carroll is not having a good morning, having lost two previously committed major recruits before the day has barely begun. We previously reported that Corona (CA) linebacker Vontaze Burfict will switch to Arizona State, now comes word that jumbo-sized South Carolina receiver Alshon Jeffery has switched his commitment from Troy to the other USC. Grab the antacid.

Jeffery is a six-foot-four receiver who had camped at USC last summer and committed not long after. His commitment held until the last week or so when the inevitable pressure to play closer to home arrived. USC has a tradition going with big receivers lately, so although rumored, Jeffery's change of heart was still quite a surprise. You don't commit to someone all the way across the country and hold that for almost a year by accident.

Signing Day: Nation's Top Linebacker Vontaze Burfict to Arizona State

In the first real shocker of signing day 2009, Corona (CA) linebacker and No. 9 rated player by Rivals.com Vontaze Burfict has decommitted from USC to play for Arizona State. The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports that a representative of the all-everything linebacker phoned USC on Tuesday to inform them of his change of plans.

Burfict is a monster get for coach Dennis Erickson and the Arizona State Sun Devils -- assuming they can get him in school, a major concern for all parties. Burfict (seen above mauling some poor high school running back) has long been rumored to have a difficult grade and test score situation that may not pass muster with the NCAA Clearinghouse or the colleges themselves.
