Yesterday's Newsmakers in the NHL: Hats Off to Michael Cammalleri

Calgary's Michael Cammalleri picked up a hat trick on Thursday night, helping lead the Flames to 4-3 win in Vancouver. Jarome Iginla assisted on two of Cammalleri's goals, while Curtis Glencross picked up the game-winning goal with just under seven-minutes to play in regulation, breaking a 3-3 tie.

For Cammalleri, it was his first career hat trick, and his first multiple-goal game as a member of the Flames.

Darcy Hordichuk, Daniel Sedin and Mason Raymond scored for the Canucks, while Curtis Sanford took the loss filling in for the injured Roberto Luongo, as he surrendered four goals on 33 shots. Miikka Kiprusoff picked up the win for Calgary -- its fourth win in the past five games -- as he turned aside 27-of-30 shots.

Weekly Rebounds: New Team, Same Old Steve Downie

Every week there are minor moves and stories around the National Hockey League that tend to fall through the cracks. Consider this our weekly roundup of those stories from the previous week, all wrapped up in one neat little package.

It didn't take Steve Downie long to leave his mark on his new team, as the feisty forward earned his first suspension as a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning organization. It probably won't be his last suspension, either.

Downie, a former first-round pick of the Flyers, was sent to Tampa Bay a couple of weeks ago, along with Steve Eminger, in exchange for Matt Carle. After playing in just six games in Norfolk, Downie was suspended for three games this past week by the American Hockey League for checking Kyle McLaren from behind.

New team. Same player.

Downie could be a useful asset to some team if he would simply use his head a little more often, and avoid taking dirty runs at players. As long as he's good for two suspensions a year (especially if they happen to be 20-game suspensions) and is a 5-minute major waiting to happen every time he steps on the ice, he's not going to be of any real use to any team, regardless of how talented he may be.

Since I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon, I'd say the Flyers made themselves a fantastic trade, regardless of whether or not Carle fulfills expectations.

Hockey Fight of the Day: Boogaard vs. Belak

While it didn't rise to the level of epic bout, I am compelled to stand up and notice when a pair of super heavyweights like Derek Boogaard and Wade Belak decide to throw down like they did last night in Florida. I missed NHL on the Fly: Final last night, so I didn't hear about the fight until this morning while I was listening to NHL this Morning on XM Radio while driving my car to work.

While the fight was all well and good, the guys at NHL Home Ice really did a great job of playing the theme to Rocky underneath the radio call of the fight. In fact, I'd dare say that the listening to the bout on radio was far more exciting than actually watching it.

Thanks, as always, to Hockeyfights.com for all the pointers.

The Ice Sheet: Lightning in a Bottleneck

Every day from Monday to Saturday, The Ice Sheet will take a look at the biggest stories in the league that happened on the ice and elsewhere the night before.

St. Pete Times reporter Damian Cristodero dropped a bomb the other day, quoting Tampa Bay GM Jay Feaster that huge changes could hit the Lightning if the team hasn't turned things around by Christmas: "Being sub-.500, being 13th or 14th out of a 15-team Eastern Conference isn't cutting it, given the money we lose, to think we're going to keep payroll where it is and not make changes."

Naturally, Vinny Lecavalier became the topic of conversation for everyone from Vancouver to Montreal, who believes it should own Vinny based on birth-right. Lyle "Spector" Richardson -- one of the few level heads when it comes to trade speculation in the NHL -- points out that unlike high-priced teammates Brad Richards and Marty St. Louis, Vinny does not have a no-trade clause in his contract. But Spector also claims that Feaster has gone on the record stating that "he wouldn't go down in history as the man who trade(d) Lecavalier." Which, to me, means it's more likely that the Bolts will fire John Tortorella or trade Vaclav Prospal if the team doesn't turn it around.

But even if Vinny were on the block, the notion that he could be had for some sort of mediocre Joe Thornton package is ludicrous.

Wade Belak's Record Chase

When it comes to Leafs' enforcer Wade Belak, breaking scoring records is the last thing that would pop up into your head. As good as Belak is with his fists, he couldn't hit an open net from three feet away if he was paid $1,000 to do so.

Given this, it's great to see Belak has a great sense of humor about the fact that he's chasing the Maple Leafs' record for futility, having not scored a goal now in 144 straight games! As seen in the video above, Belak is chasing a storied franchise record, but still has 55 games to go to even tie the esteemed mark!

Belak has played only eight times this season, and may have to wait until next season to break the record, barring a complete accident where a goal actually goes in off of any part of him.

One has to admit, though, that Belak could have a good future as a TV talking head down the road. He's got a great sense of humor, and a lot of charisma.
