Mackens Semerzier on His MMA Upset of the Year: 'I Fully Expected to Win'

Mackens SemerzierUpon authoring perhaps the biggest upset of the year in mixed martial arts, Mackens Semerzier nonchanlantly rose from the canvas, whispered a thanks to his fallen opponent Wagnney Fabiano for the opportunity to compete against him, and simply smiled to the camera broadcasting the shocker to the world.

No one would have objected if Semerzier, who according to multiple MMA wagering sites entered the bout as the biggest underdog of the 10-card WEC event, pulled out a bottle of champagne and uncorked it right in the center of the cage. Instead, he illustrated the maturity that led to his win in the first place by controlling his emotions in a supercharged moment.

"I say this with total confidence: I fully expected to win," said the previously little-known Semerzier, who improbably submitted top three featherweight Fabiano with a triangle choke. "Not that I walk around saying I can beat anyone, but that's a thing for me in life: you can always win. You can always find a way. I always thought, 'I'm going to figure out a way to do it. So when I win, it doesn't surprise me."

MMA Top 10 Featherweights: WEC on Top, but Where's Wagnney?

World Extreme Cagefighting is home to the best featherweights in MMA. Mike Brown is the undisputed champion of the world, he should have a great fight with Jose Aldo late this year, and Urijah Faber, the man Brown beat twice, is still probably the WEC's biggest draw.

But there's one problem with the WEC's featherweights: They're not doing enough to promote Wagnney Fabiano. You could make a case that Fabiano is more deserving of a title shot against Brown than Aldo is, and Fabiano certainly deserves to be heavily promoted as a future title contender. Instead, Fabiano's fight with Erik Koch next month isn't even on the live TV portion of the card.

MMA Top 10 Featherweights: Mike Brown, Urijah Faber and Who?

On today's conference call to promote WEC 41, World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight champion Mike Brown and former champ Urijah Faber both insisted that they don't care about rankings. And for the two of them, that makes sense: They're fighting on June 7, and whoever wins is, without a doubt, the No. 1 featherweight in MMA. But rankings are still fun for fans and useful for identifying the top fighters in the rest of the featherweight division, and my own featherweight Top 10 is below.

MMA Top 10 Featherweights

Now is a great time to be a fan of small fighters. We just witnessed the best bantamweight card ever at WEC 40, and my list of the Top 10 featherweights in MMA features a whole lot of guys who either won over the weekend or are about to get big tests.

WEC 40 Results: Dark Matches Show Depth of Featherweights, Bantamweights

The non-televised undercard of Sunday night's World Extreme Cagefighting show is drawing to a close, and those of us here at the UIC Pavilion have seen a lot of talented bantamweights and featherweights.

MMA Top 10 Featherweights: Mike Brown, Urijah Faber Far Ahead of the Rest

The featherweight division in MMA right now consists of Mike Brown, Urijah Faber and everyone else.

Who's the third best featherweight in MMA? I don't know. I just know that after Brown destroyed Leonard Garcia on Sunday night to retain his World Extreme Cagefighting championship at WEC 39, he's definitely the No. 1 featherweight in the world, and that former champion Faber will give Brown a great fight when they have their rematch this summer.

I have questions about everyone at positions 3-10, but my full list of the top 10 featherweights in MMA is below.

MMA Top 10 Featherweights: 'The WEC Title Is the Title for 145-Pounders'

Above, Leonard Garcia discusses his World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight title fight against Mike Brown at WEC 39. Garcia says, "The WEC title is the title for 145-pounders," and I think he's right. Although the upcoming Dream featherweight tournament will be interesting, the two best 145-pound fights this year are likely to be Garcia vs. Brown on March 1 and the winner of that fight vs. Urijah Faber in the summer.

My full MMA featherweight rankings are below.

WEC 37: Wagnney Fabiano Chokes Out Akitoshi Tamura

Wagnney Fabiano beat Akitoshi Tamura with a third-round submission at WEC 37 tonight in Las Vegas, earning a solid -- if not spectacular -- win in his World Extreme Cagefighting debut.

Tamura threw a couple of kicks in the early going, but Fabiano, a Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt, quickly got the fight on the ground. There wasn't a lot of action on the ground in the first round, as both fighters were cautious, but there was a lot of high-level jiu jitsu positioning, and Fabiano did some damage with his elbows.

They had a good exchange on their feet early in the second, but they quickly went to the ground again. At first Tamura controlled Fabiano from rubber guard and appeared to be going on the offensive, but after a few minutes on the ground with little action, referee Steve Mazzagatti stood them up. It quickly went back to the ground again, however, and Fabiano did a little damage before the bell.

WEC Signs Wagnney Fabiano, Likely to Fight Urijah Faber in 2009

Wagnney Fabiano, a Brazilian jiu jitsu specialist who is one of the best featherweight mixed martial arts fighters in the world, has signed a contract with World Extreme Cagefighting, he told the Brazilian MMA site tatame.com. Here's a look at Fabiano defeating John Gunderson:

Fabiano will almost certainly fight the WEC's featherweight champion, Urijah Faber, some time in 2009. The WEC will want to have Fabiano fight once or twice against other 145-pounders (perhaps first at its December 3 show) in order to get a little bit better name recognition with American fans, but the primary reason they signed Fabiano is to put him in the cage with Faber. That will be a great fight.
