Damage Control: Broken Leg Ends Season for Leon Washington

Leon WashingtonDid the injury bug hit your fantasy football team like it was a car windshield moving at 100 MPH? If so, it may be time to do some Damage Control.

Running Back

Donald Brown, Colts - Brown left with a strained shoulder on Sunday and did not return. More information will be learned this week.

Leon Washington, Jets - Washington left Sunday's game with a broken leg. He'll be out for the season, although the Jets say they are going to wait to put him on injured reserve.

Jonathan Stewart, Panthers - Stewart injured his finger and left the game on Sunday. He did return later in the game but you'll want to watch and see what he does in practice this week. Any kind of hand injury can wreak havoc on ball-carriers.

Will Allen Reportedly Done for Season

Will AllenAs if blowing a 24-3 home lead and losing to the Saints wasn't bad enough, the Dolphins have lost Will Allen for the season to an ACL injury, the Miami Herald reported Sunday night.

Allen left Miami's 46-34 loss midway through the third quarter. He limped to the locker room, then returned to the sideline with a brace on his knee.

"Obviously, to lose Will in that situation. It's a close ball game; I thought Will was playing pretty well at the time," Miami head coach Tony Sparano said.

Allen, Miami's top cornerback, has missed just one game since coming to the Dolphins prior to the 2006 season, and just nine games total during a nine-year career that included a stay with the Giants. Sunday marked Allen's 43rd consecutive start -- a streak that will come to an end next week when Miami visits the Jets, if the early indications are accurate.

Summer Scramble: AFC East Position Battles to Watch

It's July, the slowest month of the year for the NFL, and it's driving you nuts. You need a fix. A hit. Anything NFL to pull you through the dog days. FanHouse is here to help with an in-depth look at each division that should have you plenty prepared for training camp. We're calling it the Summer Scramble, and today we look at the AFC East's looming position battles.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Starting Over

Because the NFL season never ends, we present our 2009 Offseason Roadmaps for front offices to navigate through the summer.

Following a disastrous end to the 2009 season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have gone through some pretty significant changes. Gone are head coach Jon Gruden, general manager Bruce Allen and starting quarterback Jeff Garcia.

That's what happens when you haven't won a playoff game since 2002 and closed out your season on a four-game losing streak.

Jay Cutler Throws Two Picks in First Three Possessions, Broncos Trail Dolphins

During the Sunday pregame shows, there was some discussion about the state of the Broncos, an explosive offensive team that refuses to make tackles on defense. The results lead to high-scoring affairs, or, as was the case two Monday Night's ago, a national television whuppin' (thanks, Matt Cassel!).

Well, if the first 10 minutes of today's get-together with the Dolphins is any indication, the proverbial wheels have fallen off the offense, too. On the third play of the game, Jay Cutler, from his own 20-yard line, was intercepted by safety Will Allen. Four plays later, Miami was up 3-0. The Broncos went four-and-out on the next drive, and 10 plays after that, the Dolphins led 6-0.

On Denver's third possession, Cutler again completed a pass to a Miami defender -- Will Allen ... again -- and this time he took it 31 yards for the touchdown.

Dolphins Interested In Ty Law

The Miami Dolphins need some help in the secondary and think former Patriot Ty Law is the answer. The only problem is that Law may not be interested in them.
In the wake of a few signs of weakness from the Dolphins' secondary, including the need to manage cornerback Will Allen's knee injury, Miami has shown a preliminary interest in Pro Bowl cornerback Ty Law, a source said Thursday.

However, in an interview with NFL.com on Thursday, Law, a free agent, sounded as if the would prefer to play for either Dallas or Green Bay if one of the teams was interested in him.
Dallas has an opening in their defensive backfield due to Pacman Jones' suspension and injuries to Terence Newman. Green Bay lost cornerback Al Harris for the season. Both likely would have a better shot at getting to the postseason -- or at least the Super Bowl -- than the Dolphins.

Miami just doesn't have the overall talent and are dealing with Will Allen's knee injury.

Law's experience is valuable. He has won three Super Bowl titles with the Patriots and been to five Pro Bowls. The question is how much does he have to give after sitting the first seven weeks of the season?

FanHouse NFL Season Preview: Miami Dolphins - Nowhere to Go But Up

Training camps are underway, the NFL season is a month off, and to get you ready for 2008, FanHouse previews all 32 teams, "heat index" style. We'll rate each club in 10 categories on a scale of 1 to 10, high score wins.

Quarterbacks: The Brett Favre Fallout ended up with Chad Pennington coming to Miami. Good thing, because the Dolphins didn't have a quarterback on their roster. Well, technically they did ... but when you are having a three-man race to figure out who might be able to handle the job ... you have no QB. Pennington gives Miami what they need: an experienced, accurate passer. He's a winner, but not the kind of guy who makes those dynamic plays. Right now, they don't have great receivers, either, so a guy that can hit his target is key. Chad Henne may be the future ... but that's what we thought about John Beck last year. Heat Index: 4

Running backs: This is the biggest strength of this offense. During their 1-15 season last year, the fact that Ronnie Brown was having an outstanding season was lost on many people. Brown was worthy of a Pro Bowl spot before he tore his ACL in mid-season. All indications are that he's healed. Brown will share duties with Ricky Williams. Yep, he's back and he's bad! I can't believe I'm saying this, but Ricky has been a model teammate. He's basically lived at the Dolphins complex, is in supreme physical shape and could get back to his pre-retirement form. Of course, that is all the good. The bad is that your steadiest part of the team involves a guy with a major knee injury and another who is now 31, barely has played over the last several seasons, already has two strikes and is unreliable. At least he's not on the hippie lettuce anymore. Heat Index: 7

Dolphins' Will Allen Puts the Beatdown on Teammate ... David Kircus? Really?

We're wrapping up the second week of training camp for most NFL teams, which means the monotony is growing, the injuries are mounting, and the tempers are flaring. Take, for example, the Miami Dolphins.

During yesterday's practice, cornerback Will Allen and wideout David Kircus got into a tussle during what appeared to be an otherwise ordinary pass play. Turns out, things didn't get interesting until the ball fell incomplete. Then it was on like Donkey Kong. Via the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero:
Allen began punching on Kircus who fell to the turf and basically went into a fetal position as Allen stood over him.

The distribution of punches from Allen lasted for about five seconds then he apparently realized Kircus wasn't fighting back. So Allen stopped and as he was walking back to the line of scrimmage an unidentified offensive player (some reporters believe it was Reagan Mauia, or Anthony Fasano, or Sean Ryan or Boomer Grigsby) tackled Allen and started whooping on him.
Catfight! Catfight!

Actually, Salguero writes that that's when things started getting crazy. Defensive players came to Allen's, um, defense, and those offensive players not yet involved in the fracas joined the fun. It took about 45 seconds for the coaches to restore order, and head coach Tony Sparano was, in Salguero's words, "seen remonstrating with Allen afterward." I'm pretty sure that's bad.

Good news for the Dolphins, however: training camp is officially over so the next time Allen tries to kick Kircus' ass it'll be at the team facility. The medical facilities are much less spartan there.

NFL Investigating Dolphins' Will Allen

The National Football League is investigating Miami Dolphins cornerback Will Allen over a variety of suspicious activities, the Palm Beach Post is reporting.

According to the paper, the league's investigation started when a suspicious Detroit bank told NFL Security of Allen's involvement in a large amount of money being wired to South Florida. After the NFL started investigating that, Allen was involved in an incident in which he was accused of pulling a gun on a man who confronted him about gambling debts. In 2001, Allen was robbed at gunpoint of jewelry and valuables worth more than $100,000.

Police say they are still investigating and have not decided whether to charge Allen with a crime, but even if he isn't charged, Allen could still be in trouble with the league. NFL rules stritctly limit players' associations with gamblers.

Report: Dolphins' Will Allen Investigated for Pulling Gun in Dispute Over Gambling Debts

Miami Dolphins cornerback Will Allen is reportedly being investigated for pulling a gun on a man to whom he owed money for gambling debts.

Allen has not been arrested or charged with any crime. A Miami Herald report says that Davie Police have confirmed that Allen answered their questions Friday evening about "a dispute," but the Herald gives few details about the nature of the dispute.

The Sun-Sentinel reports, however, that WPLG-Channel 10 is reporting that the dispute was over gambling debts that Allen owed to another man. The WPLG web site has nothing about Allen.

From the NFL's perspective, it's the gambling aspect of this story that is the biggest concern. The NFL tells players not to even associate with gamblers, let alone get into a position where the gambler is demanding money from the player and the player is pulling a gun on the gambler. If that's what happened here, Allen could be in trouble with the league office.
