Falcons Lose Second-Round Pick William Moore for Season

William MooreOn Tuesday the Atlanta Falcons placed 2009 second-round draft pick William Moore on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

Moore, who Atlanta thought would be ready to immediately help at safety from day one, has been battling injuries since training camp. The 55th-overall selection from Missouri had knee surgery at the beginning of camp, only to recover and hurt his hamstring shortly thereafter. Moore battled through two hamstring tweaks this season before finally succumbing to the final blow that landed the 24-year-old on the injured reserve list.

Three Falcons Situations to Watch Tonight in St. Louis

Eric WeemsThe Atlanta Falcons are in St. Louis tonight to take on the Rams in week two of the NFL's preseason. Friday night is going to be a pivotal game to begin answering many questions that the Falcons have about depth chart issues and final 53-man roster considerations.

Here are three scenarios to keep your eye on.

Who is going to end up being the third wide receiver?
When Harry Douglas went down with a season-ending ACL tear, the Falcons had immediate openings for a punt returner (see later comments) and a third wide receiver. The team signed veteran free agents Robert Ferguson and Marty Booker soon after the Douglas injury and they are now competing with Brian Finneran and Eric Weems for that No. 3 spot.

Plus 2, Minus 2: Wounded Falcons Make 4 Roster Moves

Robert FergusonFLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- In the aftermath of the Harry Douglas injury, the Atlanta Falcons made multiple roster moves on Thursday as the team added two receivers, cut an undrafted free-agent rookie, and lost another rookie to injury.

Thursday morning started with the addition of unrestricted free agent Robert Ferguson, who signed a one year contract. Ferguson is a seven-year veteran of the NFL, most recently with the Minnesota Vikings. He only had three receptions last season but over his career has 151 receptions and 13 touchdowns.

Falcons Figure Out How to Fill Holes

Who moved to the head of the NFL class during the draft? Find out with FanHouse's team-by-team 2009 Draft Grades.

A year ago, Falcons general manager Tom Dimitroff faced a huge challenge--he had to figure out how to turnaround an awful team. So he traded away some unhappy veterans and stockpiled draft picks.

He then went out and made those draft picks count. The top three picks all became immediate starters including Matt Ryan, the franchise quarterback the Falcons needed.

This year, Dimitroff faced a much different challenge. The Falcons are a playoff team, which means they don't have nearly as many holes as they did a year ago, but it also means that the Falcons have to prove they are not a one-year fluke. When you consider that Atlanta has never gone to the playoffs in back-to-back years, that's a significant challenge of its own. So this draft was more about filling holes rather than just going to find the best available players.

Dimitroff Quickly Putting His Stamp on the Falcons Roster

When Thomas Dimitroff took the Falcons general manager job last year, he was given the job of rebuilding one of the league's worst rosters. So we knew that Dimitroff would be making some serious changes.

But it's pretty impressive how much of a turnover he's given the team so fast. As Dimitroff comes out of his second draft, nealy half of the Falcons projected starters this season will be players that he has brought in since taking over the team. That's 10 starters in two years.

NFL Draft's Senior Class Looks Thin

We'll start getting all kind of 2009 draft lists very soon, but as teams start putting together their boards, here's a sneak peek at one man's draft board. CBS Insider Charlie Casserly, a former general manager, surveyed over half of the league's scouting departments to put together a list of the college seniors who are rated as having first-round grades.

As Casserly explained, there's not a lot of depth in the senior class this year, although rumors of a rookie pay scale becoming part of a new collective bargaining agreement will ensure that a record number of juniors and red-shirt sophomores will help improve the class' talent.

The depth in the senior class is at offensive tackle and linebacker, with Casserly saying that Virginia's Eugene Monroe carries superior grades to former Virginia top-10 picks Branden Albert and D'Brickshaw Ferguson.

Here's Casserly's complete list of seniors who carry first round grades, as he revealed on CBS:
