YouTubesDay: Kerry Taylor's Behind-The-Back Catch

Kerry Taylor has some set of stones attempting this kind of grab in the middle of practice. During a recent Arizona State practice, the receiver pulled off a ridiculous behind-the-back catch (video after the jump). Its the kind of stunt that results in either a dropped ball or dropped jaws. Fortunately for Taylor, it was the latter.

He probably still got chewed out by his coach, but only after getting a pat on the back. Unfortunately it was only practice, we're talking about practice, and not a live game. Still awesome, but do it against an all Pac-10 corner and we've really got something here.

YouTubesDay: Smoke 1, Cyclones 0

As more and more sports entertainment creeps into college football entrances, something like this was bound to happen sooner or later. Watch at about the 10 second mark as an Iowa State player runs into the goal post, blinded by the thick smoke. Someone was probably hoping that the smoke would also mask the incident from the cameras. But it didn't. Not even close.

YouTubesday: College Gameday Wants Your Ears To Bleed

College Gameday is great way to start your college football Saturdays. Whether you love or hate the Gameday crew, the coverage of all the big games and stories is second to none. However, this year like the last three, you might want to hit the mute button for the first three minutes. Because Big and Rich are still riding that wave of "we sold our soul to the devil" and ESPN will again use Coming to Your City as the opening to each Gameday show. That's the only way we can explain this blasphemous use of musical equipment.

YouTubesDay: The 1980 Rose Bowl

Ohio State is scheduled to travel out west this fall to play USC in a much-anticipated contest between national powers.

This won't be the first go-round between the teams, as the two played in the 1980 Rose Bowl. USC ended up winning that matchup 17-16 thanks to a game-winning late touchdown drive punctuated by tailback Charles White going "over the top" of the pile and into the end zone.

Smart television executives will be sure to make a play on all these 28 weeks/months later films, and note that USC/Ohio State '08 marks the 28-year anniversary of the 1980 Rose Bowl.

Notable:

Frank Sinatra (RIP) made the official coin toss. Heisman Trophy winner Charles White was named game MVP rushing for over 200 yards. Future Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Allen paid his dues as a fullback until White graduated. Current USC coach Pete Carroll was a defensive assistant for Ohio State in this game (related video here). O.J. Simpson conducts the postgame interview of Trojan coach John Robinson.

YouTubesDay: Knowshon Moreno in March

Why not?

Nothing too spectacular here, but that's just how Georgia likes it on offense. Toss left, toss right, bounce it outside and easy does it for Georgia's new offensive star. As a redshirt freshman (why in the world did they redshirt him!) Moreno rushed for 1334 yards (5.4 average) and 14 touchdowns.

If past is precedent, the sampling below hints at the encore.

YouTubesDay: Utah's Sprinkles the Bear

Or: BYU fans can't spell

Where to begin? So apparently there's a Utah football fan. Who dresses as a bear. Why, you ask? He'll tell you why!

Hint: beer = bear (?), and it sprinkles. Or something. Watch the vid.

Aside: watch this video to see the bear dancing. Circus act or vaguely Utah-related fan behavior? You decide.

Another aside: pirate guy to his left. Yeah.

Necessary and inevitable BYU comeback (cracking on people in bear and pirate costumes aside): what's a Ute?

YouTubesDay: Stafon Johnson's Amazing Pick

Tomorrow is signing day, so in the spirit of the season - ogling over kids not yet graduated from high school - I present to you this video. In it, future USC tailback Stafon Johnson (100+ yards in the Rose Bowl against Illinois) makes one of the more impressive plays I've ever seen.

The video quality is poor, so take my word when I say Johnson managed one of the more unique hat tricks around. In the 2004 Los Angeles City Section championship game between Birmingham High and Dorsey High (played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum), Johnson did the following in a single play:

1)Perfectly timed a play from the safety spot to level a receiver the exact moment he put his hands on the ball

2)Took the ball from said - nearly decapitated - receiver while following through on the hit

3)Takes said victory spoils and shakes a tackle in impressive form returning the interception for a touchdown

Ah hell, description doesn't do it justice. Just watch. And then watch again. Seriously.

YouTubesDay: Illibuck's Night Out

Say hello to Illibuck, the nation's 10th strangest rivalry trophy according to some authority. Just don't ask us who.

It's a massive turtle, under the watch and care of honor societies at both Illinois and Ohio State. This year the Ohio State folks had it - I stress had, since Illinois just took down their team two weeks ago - and decided to tour Columbus asking residents about the trophy and its meaning in the rivalry. The awkward results are below.

YouTubesDay: Refs Muff Huskies-Beavers

If you thought the officiating was bad in last year's Oregon-Oklahoma game, the Pac Ten officials have taken incompetence to a new level in last week's Washington-Oregon State game, and Pac Ten Commissioner Tom Hansen is not amused:
"Our review of the game included study of the game tape by Coordinator of Football Officiating Dave Cutaia, Director of Instant Replay Verle Sorgen, football administrator Jim Muldoon and me, review of game reports from the officiating crew and instant replay officials, communications with the two institutions and follow-up communications with the referee of the game.

"We regret that there was flagrant misconduct on the part of some players which led to four ejections from the game, that there was an injury to Washington quarterback Jake Locker which increased the emotions of the players and that the instant replay crew failed to stop the game to review the play at the goal line with just under three minutes to play. On the play, it was ruled Oregon State's Yvenson Bernard fumbled. However, it appeared his knee had touched the ground before he lost the ball...

"We do believe the instant replay officials did not perform properly on the Bernard fumble play. There was human error in that while reviewing the available replays the crew failed to notify the game officials to stop play before the ball was snapped for the next play. It was not the fault of the equipment. The game should have been stopped and the play reviewed. The members of the IR crew have been reprimanded."
