Bengals: Curse of the 2005 Draft Revisited

Just over one year ago, I wrote this about the horrible Bengals draft of 2005. In 2008, the Bengals have tried their best to wash their hands of that weekend ... and have seen five of the seven picks leave this season for various reasons. Two were flat out released; one retired due to injury; two were not tendered contracts.

Combined, these seven guys have played just 140 (out of a possible 448) games in the orange and black ... with Chris Henry (35) and Eric Ghiaciuc (32) the only ones to top twenty games. None played in all 16 games this past season -- only two played more than half the year. Three didn't suit up at all.

1st Round [#17]-David Pollack, LB, Georgia: Pollack had an unfortunate neck injury in Week 2 against the Browns in 2006. Despite trying to attempt a comeback, he retired earlier this year. He's played in just 16 games since being drafted. Status: Retired

2nd Round [#48]-Odell Thurman, LB, Georgia: Thurman was to be the focal point of the Bengals defense, before he was suspended for the first four games of the 2006 season for violating the league's substance abuse policy. A few weeks into the season, he was charged with OVI [operating a vehicle while impared]. Two days later, the league suspended him for the remainder of the season (the suspension would continue through 2007). He's played in just 16 games since being drafted and was released yesterday. Status: Released.

3rd Round [#83]-Chris Henry, WR, West Virginia: Look, we all know the deal here. He's a very productive player but can't stay out of his own way. He was suspended for Bengals' first 8 games of the 2007 season and could face a stiffer penalty if some recent off-field issues come back to bite him. He had played in 35 games for the Bengals before being released this offseason. Status: Released.

Bengals Roster Moves And Injury Report

Greg BrooksThe Bengals made a few roster moves yesterday.

Corner Greg Brooks was moved to IR. Brooks played in five games this year, mostly on special teams, but he'll miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Offensive tackle Adam Kieft was moved from the physically unable to perform list to IR. That's a slight upgrade I think. He's been out since early 2005 with a slow healing knee injury.

Defensive end Jonathan Fanene was cleared to return to practice on a roster exemption. Fanene played a little last year, and I was impressed with what I saw. He'll have three weeks to practice before the Bengals will have to decide what do with him.

Defensive tackle Marcus Lewis was waived from IR. I honestly hadn't even heard of Lewis. He was hurt back in the preseason.

The Bengals also upgraded Willie Anderson from questionable to probable. This shouldn't surprise anyway I don't think. Willie will play if he's at all able, that's just his character. There's a good chance that Brian Simmons and Kevin Kaesviharn will be out again on Sunday though, and I really think the Bengals miss both of those guys when they're not available.

Chris Perry Could Return Sunday

Chris PerryThe Bengals need some kind of boost, and hopefully this could be it. Chris Perry, who's been on the physically unable to perform list all season, is eligible to return this week.

Cincinnati desperately needs him since they only have three healthy receivers at the moment. Perry's obviously a running back, but he caught 51 passes out of the backfield last year, and could give the struggling offense a new look. It actually wouldn't surprise me to see the Bengals let Perry line up as a wide receiver on Sunday. Desperate times, desperate measures and all that.

The Bengals will also have to make decisions on two other players on the PUP list. Defensive end Jonathan Fanene and offensive lineman Adam Kieft are eligible to return, and the Bengals have three weeks to either add them to the roster or place them on injured reserve. My guess is that we won't be seeing either of those two players this season, although Kieft might be more of a possibility since the Bengals are so thin in the offensive line right now.

Bengals Swing the Axe

Reggie McNeal22 roster moves were made today, and there were some surprising names involved (although not as surprising as a few other teams moves - still amazed at the Detroit fiasco with Charles Rogers). From Mark Curnutte, the full list:
WAIVED: wide receivers Glenn Holt, P.K. Sam and McNeal, offensive linemen Nate Livings, Kyle Takavitz, Pete Lougheed and Wilkerson, tight ends Darnell Sanders, David Jones and Ghent, running backs DeDe Dorsey, Naufahu Tahi and Chris Manderino, defensive lineman Eric Henderson and safety John Busing.

PUP: tailback Chris Perry, defensive end Jonathan Fanene and offensive lineman Adam Kieft.

IR: wide receiver Bennie Brazell, cornerback Patrick Body and defensive tackle Marcus Lewis.

SUSPENDED: Linebacker Odell Thurman was officially placed on the "Reserve/Suspended by Commissioner" list for his second violation of the league substance abuse policy.
The names that surprise me the most here are Reggie McNeal, the Bengals sixth rounder from this past draft. McNeal was Texas A&M's quarterback, but the Bengals drafted him as a wide receiver / special teams player. The pick confused me then, and I guess it confuses me even more now. As deep as this team is at wide receiver I just don't understand why they wasted a draft pick on the position.

I'm also surprised to see center Ben Wilkerson cut. I'd always assumed he'd one day be the heir to Rich Braham, but I guess that won't be happening now. Eric Ghiaciuc kind of made him redundant. The Bengals also cut a couple of players who had impressive preseasons in Tahi and Dorsey, which is to be expected with how deep this team is.

I'm glad to see Bennie Brazell kept, I think he has a future in the NFL in some capacity. The guy's crazy fast and speed is always worth something.
The most gratifying part of cut day has to be seeing so many quality players getting waived, players who could easily play for plenty of NFL teams. It's impressive that the Bengals have enough talent to waive guys like McNeal and Wilkerson.
