July 11 marks the anniversary of when the Pittsburgh Penguins traded Jaromir Jagr to the Washington Capitals for the woefully underwhelming (and somewhat embarrassing) return of Kris Beech, Michal Sivek and Ross Lupaschuk. Pensburgh, taking a look back at the trade, referred to the deal as a "lose-lose for both sides."

Statistically speaking, however, it was, and still is, the worst trade involving a Pittsburgh sports team.

Following the trade, Jagr played 467 games in the NHL, scoring 207 goals and recording 520 points with the Capitals and Rangers. The three guys the Penguins received? 239 games, 28 goals and 73 points.

While Jagr's stint in Washington may have been a disappointment, his time with the Penguins is still legendary.

HOMESTEAD, Pa. -- Phil Bourque spent eight of his 12 NHL seasons as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins, helping the team win two Stanley Cups in the early 1990s. Since the 2003-04 campaign, he's worked as an analyst for the Penguins radio network, and we had an opportunity to catch up with him at the team's Championship DVD release on Monday night.

Among the topics discussed: How do the current Penguins compare to the teams he played on, which current Penguin is the modern-day Phil Bourque, and why are hockey players the most approachable, fan-friendly athletes in sports?

Because the NFL rules the sports landscape in North America, it shouldn't be a surprise that Bill Cowher, former head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers for 15 years, has worked his way into the storyline of the NHL's Eastern Conference final between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Carolina Hurricanes.

Prior to the start of the series, there was some debate as to Cowher's rooting interest for the series, seeing as how he not only coached in Pittsburgh for a decade-and-a-half, but because he was born and raised in Pittsburgh, and now currently lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. Prior to Tuesday's Game 4, Cowher will be sounding the Hurricanes' pre-game warning siren, and, as far as many people in the steel city are concerned, turning his back on Pittsburgh.

There was a time when my favorite sport was, without hesitation, baseball. Recently, however, my interest in the game has been lost. Not because of a steroid scandal or the incompetence of Bud Selig, but mostly because the team I grew up cheering for, the Pittsburgh Pirates, has been a Major League Baseball team in name only and is currently working on its 17th consecutive losing season with no end in sight.

You might argue that makes me a fair-weather fan, but I disagree. My interest is so low that if, by some perfect storm -- like the rest of the National League halting operations and disbanding from the league -- the Pirates actually won something, I still probably wouldn't care as much as I should. I just don't care about baseball anymore, but I certainly don't begrudge those who still do. It's still a great game, even if my interest is at an all-time low.

With his 35th goal of the season in Pittsburgh's 3-1 win over Montreal on Saturday night, Evgeni Malkin secured the first Art Ross Trophy of his career as the league's leading scorer. Malkin finishes the regular season with 113 points, beating out Washington's Alex Ovechkin, who finished with 110.

Ovechkin will take home his second straight Maurice Rocket Richard award as the league's leading goal-scorer, tallying 56 for the season.

A couple of weeks ago, David Staples of the Edmonton Journal kicked up plenty of dust when he reported that the Edmonton Oilers were in the midst of completing a deal that would return Jaromir Jagr to the NHL.

Though he took some heat for his reporting at the time, Staples was vindicated a few hours ago when the Kontinental Hockey League issued a press release that referenced an interview that Jagr gave to Denik Sport where he confirmed that a deal indeed almost did get done. But while the deal didn't get done in time for this season, Jagr later left the door open for a return to the NHL, though he again insisted that a return to America wasn't his idea.

Before the Pittsburgh Penguins had Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin to draw fans to the building, they had to resort to promotional giveaways advertised in cheesy commercials with what are now archaic graphics and technology. They also used superstars such as Rod Schutt and Pat Price to promote their product. I guess Rick Kehoe and Randy Carlyle weren't available.

Let's go back to March 13, 1982, when the first 5,000 adults for the Penguins vs. Colorado Rockies game received a promotional Budweiser picnic jug:

Hurricanes 3, Rangers 0: The good news for the Carolina Hurricanes is they seem to be playing their best hockey of the season at the absolute right time. The bad news is they still can't seem to gain any separation in the tight Eastern Conference playoff race.

Thanks to the Hurricanes 3-0 win over the New York Rangers on Monday, they jumped over three teams to move into a tie with Montreal for the No. 5 spot in the conference, but are guaranteed to fall as low as the No. 7 spot on Tuesday, depending on what happens in the Pittsburgh-Florida game. It's going to be like this every day for the rest of the regular season.

In news that is sure to delight the rest of the Eastern Conference, the New York Rangers have claimed forward Sean Avery on re-entry waivers, as reported by TSN. There was some speculation leading up to the announcement that a number of teams might consider a claim before the Rangers, but the Avery-to-New York reunion was destined to happen.
