Padilla Diagnosed With Swine Flu

Vincente PadillaKANSAS CITY, MO. (AP) -- Texas Rangers pitcher Vicente Padilla tested positive for swine flu, though his symptoms are subsiding and he's expected to make his next start.

Padilla was scratched from his start Wednesday against Boston due to flulike symptoms, and lab reports Friday indicated he had H1N1 Type A influenza. He is thought to be the first athlete in U.S. major pro sports to be diagnosed with swine flu.

Ten Waiver Wire Gems From Day 1

Everyone can have a good day every once in a while, right? I think the most repeated cliche to represent this is "Every dog has his day".

Well, let me give you another cliche, "A river begins with one drop of water". To slant that one into fantasy baseball speak I'll say that even though it's just one game, players who shined on day one of the Major League baseball season might just be starting a trend that will last a long time. Joe DiMaggio had to start his 56-game hitting streak with the first hit, right?

A lot of players shined yesterday in baseball's Opening Day. Here are ten players who are available in many of your fantasy leagues, ranked from highest percentage of ownership to lowest.

1. Hank Blalock, Rangers - Blalock went 2-4 yesterday with a home run and three RBI. Most people are waiting for some part of his body to fall off or spontaneously combust, which is why he's only owned in 52% of Yahoo leagues. Until that expected injury occurs, Blalock isn't a bad fantasy option. He does hit in the heart of a somewhat potent lineup in a great hitters park.

Fantasy Flings: American League West

From now until the regular season begins, Fantasy Flings is where you'll find interesting story lines about your favorite teams from Spring Training. If there is a position battle, a nagging injury, a comeback story or a youngster making a surge for the "big club" we'll let you know the fantasy implications.

Los Angeles Angels
It turns out the Angels only rented Mark Teixeira for a few months. Now it's time to find a replacement. Kendry Morales tore up the Dominican Winter League to the tune of a .404 batting average with eight home runs and 29 RBI in only 26 games. He's also 6-17 through six Spring Training games. Nobody expects, or even asks, Morales to fill Teixeira's shoes, but the Cuban defector could blast 18 to 20 home runs and bat upwards of .280 if given full-time at-bats. He's a great late round fantasy draft flier in mixed-leagues and should be grabbed in AL-only leagues of any depth.

The Tigers Swap Prospects for Gerald Laird

Gerald LairdOne of Dave Dombrowski's first decisions of the offseason was to move Brandon Inge back to third base, pushing Carlos Guillen to left field. The move made perfect sense: Inge is a Gold Glove-caliber fielder whereas Guillen played like he was wearing cement boots and using a frying pan for a glove.

On Sunday, Dombrowski replaced Inge behind the plate, picking up Gerald Laird from the Rangers in exchange for a pair of pitching prospects: Guillermo Moscoso, a 25-year-old righthander who spent most of last season in Single-A, and Carlos Melo, a 17-year-old righthander who's yet to pitch above rookie league.

All in all, it doesn't seem like too high of a price to pay for Laird, a capable starting catcher who hit .276 (92 OPS+) in 344 at-bats last season. He'll get the job done without being a complete blackhole and at least has the potential to be above average for his position. In Detroit's lineup, that's all they really need from their starting backstop.

With Laird out of the picture, it'll be that much more difficult for another team to pry Jarrod Saltamacchia or Taylor Teagarden away from the Rangers. For the moment, those two figure to share catching duties, though Saltamacchia could also see time at first base.

Major League Mongering: Teixeira to Atlanta

Mark TeixeiraMajor League Mongering will look at players rumored to be on the move between now and the July 31st pseudo-trade-deadline.

It's becoming more and more rare to see blockbuster deals at the deadline, but that might not be the case this year if there is any truth to these Mark Teixeira rumors. From MLB.com:
But one Major League scout confirmed the Braves and Rangers are still discussing a trade that would be headlined with Teixeira and almost definitely include Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Atlanta's 22-year-old switch-hitting catcher who stands as one of the most attractive prospects on the trade market.
This isn't the first time we've heard this rumor, and with the trade deadline just a week away, it's not surprising to see it pick up steam.

Why does this need to happen? The Braves are desperate for a big stick at first base. How desperate? Their current first basemen have combined for a pathetic .205 batting average and .621 OPS this year, which each rank dead last in the National League by wide margins. Scott Thorman, who's seen most of the starts, has been so bad that the Braves have played Saltamacchia out of position there and even picked up 800-year-old Julio Franco.

What might he bring in return? Like the report from MLB.com suggests, the Rangers probably wouldn't do this deal for anything less than a package involving Saltamacchia, widely regarded as one of the best catching prospects in the game who's unfortunately blocked at the big-league level in Atlanta by the 23-year-old Brian McCann. Other players that Atlanta might deal include young pitching prospect Jo-Jo Reyes or shortstop Elvis Andrus.
