(Getty Images)

The 2008 NFL season is inching closer to its end, while each passing week sees Drew Brees and Kurt Warner inch closer to Dan Marino's single-season record of 5,084 passing yards, set in 1984. We chronicle their quest in this new feature, Marino Watch. Think of it as McGwire/Sosa, without 'roids.

Drew Brees (vs. Carolina): 30-for-48 for 386 yards, four touchdowns, one interception

Where He Stands

FanHouse NFL Season Preview: Carolina Panthers - No One Feels Comfortable

Training camps are underway, the NFL season is a month off, and to get you ready for 2008, FanHouse previews all 32 teams, "heat index" style. We'll rate each club in 10 categories on a scale of 1 to 10, high score wins.

Quarterback: Jake Delhomme is coming off Tommy John surgery so no one knows what to expect. At the end of 2006, some fans wanted someone new at quarterback. Before he was injured in 2007, he was off to a white-hot start. How he recovers will go a long way to a successful Panthers season. Matt Moore filled in nicely late last season and may be the team's future. Brett Basanez isn't ready for prime time. No more Vinny or Mr. Mittens. Heat Index: 5

Running backs: The Panthers have been looking for a Stephen Davis type back and may have found one in rookie Jonathan Stewart. He's the kind of bull coach John Fox likes to center his offense around. DeAngelo Williams will be more efficient as a change-of-pace back. Brad Hoover is back again as an effective fullback. Nick Goings is always around to back up anybody. Heat Index: 5

Jason Baker Gets Paid

Last December, I argued that Carolina Panthers punter Jason Baker might have deserved a Pro Bowl nod. One commenter called it "the first ever 'snub' post and/or article about a PUNTER in the history of journalism." Granted, this assumes I'm actually a "journalist," rather than just some lunatic fan sitting at home in his pajamas, writing snark-filled soliloquies to one of his favorite teams...

Still, I like to think I've been around long enough to know quality when I see it, and as kickers go, Baker has been a quality acquisition for the Panthers. They recognized this, too, and gave Baker a five-year, $8.5 million contract extension today, making him one of the highest-paid punters in the NFL. Given the year he had last year, I'd say he's worth it.

Between Baker and John Kasay, at least the Panthers' kicking game is secure for 2007 -- as long as neither of them gets hurt, anyway. (*knock on wood*) Not too many NFL teams can say that. Come to think of it, not too many MLS teams can say that, either.
