Every Thursday, Pickin' On the Big Ten previews the weekend's action, settling the scores before the scores are settled.
Penn State has declared that Saturday night's game with Iowa will be a "whiteout" game. That distinction is usually reserved for games of the utmost importance, and if you don't know why this game is so important to the Nittany Lions, you must not remember what happened last year in Iowa City. A Daniel Murray field goal put the Hawkeyes on top and ended any hopes Penn State had of getting blown out by Florida playing in the BCS National Championship Game. It's time for revenge.
Penn State, however, is not the only Big Ten team with a little revenge on its mind this weekend.
This list hopefully is all-inclusive, touching on the stuff I'd like to do but should have some resonance for all fans of the game. I'd love to party with the USC Song Girls, for instance, but maybe the Oregon cheerleaders are more your cup of tea? Thus, neither makes the list.
With an impossible to forget voice and genial lightheartedness that warms the soul, Keith Jackson made college football magical for millions of viewers across the decades. He's retired now but is in many ways still the face and voice of fall Saturdays. An opportunity to shoot the breeze for a few hours with Jackson, watching some games or just talking about the game is near the top of my list and probably that of many other fans.
"Old School" is the College Football FanHouse's irregular look back at the rich history of college football, usually through the medium of embeddable flash video. Check out the Old School archive for more famous plays and infamous hair.
I am a sucker for the following things:
Keith Jackson
80s era theme music
college football rivalries
guys named "Van", and
a coked out Ozzy Osbourne.
And let me tell, you, I am in luck.
"How do you characterize this? It's hard. I suppose if you're from the south you could call it 'three whoopies and a hot damn.'" I miss Keith Jackson so, so badly.
