Fantasy Football Week 3 Rankings: TEs

If you're still having trouble finding a decent tight end option at this point, you're doing something wrong. The tight end position has been consistently deep and productive over the first two weeks of the season. The Big Four is becoming more like the Big Dozen -- well, maybe.

There's simply no shying away from what Dallas Clark did on Monday night. He is essentially a No. 2 wide receiver for this Colts offense with Anthony Gonzalez down and out. However, you already knew that, right? And so, we must stick to our guns for yet another week with Mr. Clark leading the tight end rankings.

Fantasy Spin: Derrick Ward to Tampa

For all those secretly coveting and projecting Derrick Ward as the 2009 version of Michael Turner (you know the capable back-up who signs with a new team to be the man) you just might wanna pay attention. Ward just signed with the Tampa Bay Bucs with aspirations of finally being the man.

If another season plagued by knee injuries wasn't the signal of the end for Carnell Williams, this should be. Ward had other suitors in the fold, but chose the re-vamped Tampa Bay offense that is beginning to take on a new shape in the early going of this new regime. You may recall Ward was quite the steady contributor the past few seasons in New York and he caught the eye of many in the fantasy football world after he blistered the Carolina Panthers for 215 yards on National TV. So who else is impacted?

In Search of the Means to a Valuable Tight End: Fantasy Football TE Ranks for Week 12

FanHouse fantasy positional rankings are compiled weekly by the staff in order to provide answers to possible lineup questions. These are assuming most leagues use Fleaflicker's standard scoring structure. If you need clarification, you need more players ranked, or have funky league rules, feel free to shoot us an email question.

The roller-coaster ride continues if you don't own a top-tier TE. However, even if you do - those once reliable options have been hit or miss at best. Tony Gonzalez continues to flourish in the role as the top dog, but Antonio Gates should be primed for a decent game this week. Meanwhile, fantasy owners can finally breathe a sigh of relief as Jason Witten has a pretty good matchup and -- although he might not be 100 percent -- at least Tony Romo is back.

Yet, once you get past those favorite TE options... it's really a crapshoot. Fantasy pundits fell in love, for some reason, with big John Carlson. He's returned a big helping of nothing in return during recent weeks. Plenty of fantasy owners were banking on Kevin Boss last weekend and he also dished out a helping of bust. Who's the boss now? Ah, yes ... bad, bad joke.

Well, the flavor of the week now seems to be Dustin Keller coming off a breakout stretch of games. Will he also break our hearts? I sure hope not, because I've bumped him up the TE rankings and I'm banking on big things for my own team. So don't blame me if he craps out. Stay tuned.

Quick note: I just couldn't bump Dallas Clark over the "Big Three." Worth mentioning, though, is that San Diego is a funnel for tight ends to have successful days. Just mentioning. On with the ranks...

1. Antonio Gates, IND
2. Tony Gonzalez, BUF
3. Jason Witten, SF
4. Dallas Clark, @ SD
5. Chris Cooley, @SEA

New 'Defensive End/Linebacker' Franchise Tag Could Bring More Confusion

Back in February, there was quite a disagreement to what position Terrell Suggs plays. The Baltimore Ravens used the franchise tag for a linebacker on Suggs. However, he believed he was a defensive end.

Doesn't seem like a big deal, but it is an $800,000 deal. You see, if you earn the franchise tag you will earn the average of the top five players at your position. Being a defensive end brings in more money for Suggs. He challeged the designation and many were eager to see how this all played out.

Well, we have our verdict.

Thanks to an agreement by the Ravens, Suggs' agent, the Management Council and the NFL Players Association, Suggs gets the best of both worlds. The settlement, which is being finalized by lawyers for the NFLPA and the Management Council, creates a new position in franchise designations -- a defensive end-linebacker. Once the paperwork is completed later this week, Suggs, designated as a franchise linebacker, will be re-designated as a defensive end-linebacker, and his one-year franchise tender will increase from $8.065 million to around $8.5 million.

Joey Porter Caves, Gives Credit to Winslow

After Porter talked all week leading up to the game though his team was winless on the season, I dubbed the contest between Miami and Cleveland as one between linebacker Joey Porter and tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. Now that he was outplayed in the Browns 41-31 win, the coach killer actually gave credit to Winslow and the Browns:
"He played well," Porter said. "I'm not going to take that away from him. I have to give credit where credit is due. He made some plays and they came out with a victory, which is the big factor."

On Winslow's 33-yard reception, Porter said: "He beat me on a vertical. I told you he was a receiver. There's nothing I can say to sugarcoat that. He made a heck of a play."
Wow, I've almost fallen over in my chair. Of course, Porter did get a small shot in there on Winslow despite the compliment, calling him a receiver as he's done in the past, but still, Porter at least gave credit afterwards. That's more than I can say for the man who told us to get our popcorn ready but didn't give much credit to his opponent after his team got boat-raced.

Browns at Patriots: 16 Point Favorites

To get you ready for week 5, FanHouse is previewing all 14 NFL games. Here is the Cleveland Browns/New England Patriots preview.

2007 Records:

Cleveland Browns: 2-2 (T-2nd in AFC North)
New England Patriots: 4-0 (1st in AFC East)

Last Game(s):

Patriots 34 - Bengals 13
Browns 27 - Ravens 13

When the Browns have the ball: They will go to the air game in order to keep up with the potent Pats offense. To the surprise of many people, the Browns are actually 6th in the NFL with 109 points scored on the year. They're doing it because Derek Anderson has been able to locate his receivers and get the ball in the hands of his play makers. Asante Samuel has been a lock-down corner this year, and certainly kept Ocho Cinco in check on Monday night. That's bad news for Braylon Edwards, who ranks 6th in the NFL in receiving yards. As a result, Anderson will likely target Kellen Winslow Jr., who's right behind Edwards in receiving yards, and Joe Jurevicius, who's become a popular red zone target.

When the Patriots have the ball: There's no funny business about the Patriots gameplan -- they just execute well on the field. New England will continue to roll with the most lethal combination in all of football -- Tom Brady to Randy Moss. Leigh Bodden must have a death wish saying he's looking forward to covering Moss, since nobody else has been able to do it this year. With Brady leading the NFL in completion percentage, touchdown passes, and quarterback rating, the Pats passing game is nearly unstoppable. For that reason, it really doesn't even matter who starts between Laurence Maroney and Sammy Morris at running back.

Ravens at Browns: Jamal Lewis' Revenge

To get you ready for week 4, FanHouse is previewing all this week's games. Here is the Baltimore Ravens vs. Cleveland Browns preview.

2007 Records:
Baltimore Ravens: 2-1 (2nd in AFC North)
Cleveland Browns: 1-2 (t-3rd in AFC North)

Last Game:
Ravens 26, Cardinals 23
Raiders 26, Browns 24

When the Ravens have the ball: They will feed Willis McGahee the pill as much as possible. The Browns rush defense is second to last in the NFL, and they've given up the most points in the league. Sure, the Bengals offense shredded the Browns through the air, but with Steve McNair's health in question, the Ravens won't have a need to stray from the running game.

When the Browns have the ball: They'll air it out against the Ravens secondary. Jamal Lewis may claim to have inside info on the Ravens, but he's been bottled up in the two Cleveland losses, averaging well under four yards per carry. The Browns have great receiving weapons in Kellen Winslow Jr. and Braylon Edwards, and will look to attack Baltimore the same way Kurt Warner and the Cardinals did in the 4th quarter last week.
